Kadıköy (Turkish pronunciation: [ˈkadɯcøj]; ancient and Byzantine Chalcedon (Greek: Χαλκηδών)), is a large, populous, and cosmopolitan district of Istanbul, Turkey on the northern shore of the Sea of Marmara, facing the historic city centre on the European side of the Bosporus. Kadıköy is also the name of the most prominent neighbourhood of the district, a residential and commercial area that, with its numerous bars, cinemas and bookshops, is the cultural centre of the Anatolian side of Istanbul. Kadıköy became a district in 1928 when it was separated from Üsküdar district. The neighbourhoods of İçerenköy, Bostancı and Suadiye were also separated from the district of Kartal in the same year, and eventually joined the newly formed district of Kadıköy. Its neighbouring districts are Üsküdar to the northwest, Ataşehir to the northeast, Maltepe to the southeast, and Kartal beyond Maltepe. The population of Kadıköy district, according to the 2007 census, is 509,282.

READ MORE We started the day with getting some fish bread from the famous boats at Eminönü. We then bought tickets to our Bosphorus tour with a cruise company called Sehir Hatlari. We bought the full tour which took around 5 hours to do. It picks up people at various points along the Bosphorus and stops at the end of the tour at Alanya Kalesi, which is a small village on the Asian side of Istanbul. At Anadolu Kavagi, we didn't find too much to see except for a small hike up to the Yoros Castle. After the hike, we went down to the port area while we wait for our cruise ride back to Eminönü. Since it was still early, we decided to take a normal ferry to Kadikoy, which is a popular town in the Asian side. The atmosphere there was less touristy and people speak less English. We e...

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Istanbul Eats guide "G" led us down the market street in Kadikoy and into a shop that sold different kinds of Pickle Juice that tasted...just like a pickle. Turks love pickle juice but it was a little too salty for my taste. Dry Baklava, wet Baklava, delicious Lahmacun (think pizza) that is traditionally eaten with Sumac/Sumach sprinkled over it; a spice from berries of a flowering plant. I think of Poison Ivy when Sumac is mentioned and was surprised to hear Poison Ivy comes from only one species of Sumac. Tantuni is relatively new in Istanbul, was a group favorite, and resembled a rolled up Burrito! More stops. More samples. Kokoretto (sweetbreads). Lentil soup, Sheep head and feet soup which tasted better than it sounded. We're still not done yet....

Do jump on one, any one, to see something new and different. A common theme through most of this series of videos recorded in Turkey will involve food, one of my reasons for living, but even if you are not a "foodie" - food is a big part of Turkish culture and will surround you. Mine ("Mina"), owner of Hotellino, suggested a trip over to Kadikoy on the Asian side to walk through the gorgeous fish market, see old Ottoman style houses, and perhaps have lunch in one of the many restaurants (although after Hotellino's gigantic breakfast, I don't know how she expected us to stuff more food down gullets).
