Over Population is a Myth
Most people think that the world is overpopulated. Is this true or is it far from the truth? Science behind the idea that it is looks to be outdated and false. Many scientists have long ago debunked this idea, showing that the human race is in no danger of overpopulating the planet, and in fact is facing a demographic collapse. So why do the vast majority of people worry that there are too many of

Actress Alexandra Paul breaks the silence on one of the most taboo subjects of our time: human overpopulation and how to resolve the crisis that is adding 220,000 more people to the planet every day. In this fact filled talk, Alexandra discusses the overpopulation problems of 7 billion humans multiplying at a rate of 1 billion more people every 12 years and offers a simple solution: Transform negative cultural attitudes about the Only Child, and celebrate the short and long term benefits of small families.
Alexandra reminds us that coercion in any form is not the answer to changing cultural and biological norms. Instead, rewiring our biology through strong cultural messaging, education of girls and empowerment of women are the solutions to stopping the current momentum towards 10 billion people on the planet in 40 years.
Alexandra emphasizes that because each American born uses so many more resources than someone from a developing country, it is equally important that wealthy countries have small families. She discusses the economic tradeoffs of a smaller population in a world where capitalism reigns: because the capitalist system depends upon more and more consumers, there are strong forces at work to keep the numbers of people on earth growing. But at what expense?
And since human numbers cannot keep getting larger forever, at what point will we change our ways? When it is too late?
Most controversially, Alexandra believes that, if humans are to survive on this planet, the ideal family has one child and the ideal number of people on earth is 2 billion. "If that is too radical, then it is time for radicalism. Too much is at stake to be polite." This talk is full of overpopulation facts.

With an estimated world population of 7 billion and rising, how do we stop over population from becoming out of control?
The world we all live on is a big place, but we are very quickly over crowding it. Many people don't want to even acknowledge the problem that is growing around every one of you watching this video. But planet Earth, our home, in some places already has too many human inhabitants, and the world's population continues to increase. So what will happen when the world becomes over populated? Well no animal species can survive without enough food, water, shelter and certain other resources. And human beings are no different. Nature will reduce the population through famine and disease, among other things. However This kind of world already exists,in third world country's. So how do we stop this happening in our own countries. Imagine your towns or cities overflowing with people trying to survive, trying to eat and feed there family's. People would fight to get the resources they need, crime would rise and you streets would look like you were living in a movie scene. Human over population occurs when the number of people in a group exceeds the carrying capacity of the region that they occupy. This can be the result of an increase of births, a decline in mortality rates, an increase in immigration, or depletion of resources. The human population has been growing since the end of the Black Death in the 1400s, but the most significant increase has been in the last 50 years and is due to medical advancements. Currently in the year 2014 the worlds human population is estimated at over 7 billion. Scientists have estimated that the earths carrying capacity is between 4 billion and 16 billion. So with this estimate, over population has already occurred and some believe that at the rate it is increasing, by 2040 the population will be between 8 and 10.5 billion. The main concern with these increases is that the planet may not be able to sustain present or larger numbers of human inhabitants. We could see environmental problems such as rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, global warming, and pollution. Increased demand for fresh water and food, leading to starvation and malnutrition. Over consumption of natural resources like fossil fuels, and a deterioration in living conditions. So how do we prevent human population becoming out of control? Well almost no current world leader is willing to acknowledge the problem, much less take the necessary steps to resolve it. The Chinese government did impose a limit to the amount of children one couple are a load to have, but people found various strategies to get around the restriction. In the past decade china has seen an increase in population of over 61 million people, but the 'One Child Policy' has prevented an estimated 250 million births in the same span of ten years. However with such an alarming rate of population growth in other country's around the world, it is an undeniable fact that the world's governments will be forced to act and start a program that will reduce the levels of humans. They may start by introducing education programs that teach people not to have so many kids Or maybe offer an incentive in some way. If this approach didn't work then they may go down the route china did and put a ban on more than one child per family. If this didn't work, then hysterectomies, castrations or some form of birth control may be enforced in some way. If you have to many kids in the governments eyes and become pregnant again they may Force you to have an abortion. Some new born children may be purposely made infertile for life. But if it every got so bad that the governments of the world had to do something seriously extreme, then maybe age restrictions would be there solution. These are just a few ideas and there are probably lots more that could be done before murdering people was an option. Maybe by the time our planet is massively over populated some sort of technical solution would be available. Like an extraterrestrial settlement some where in the solar system. But if you think, " no this won't happen, or this won't effect me" then you have only got to look at the number of starving people in the world to realise that this problem is real and if human population increase estimates are correct, then it may be happening a lot faster than you think.

An animation film about the issue of overpopulation. More of my work can be found on rixt.org.
Overpopulation
Way back in 1950 when my parents were born there were 2,5 billion people on this planet. By the time I arrived in 1985, this had doubled to 5 billion people. Today, there are roughly 7 billion, and by the time I'll retire it's expected to be around 10 billion people. That means that it took from the beginning of humanity, 200.000 years ago, untill 1950 to reach 2,5 billion people, but it will only take one hundred more years to add three times that amount. In other words, the population is growing exponentially.
Let me put it differently. By the time you've reached the end of this video about 300 people have been added to the planet. In an hour from now there will be 8684 more people, and this time tomorrow we'll have 208.434 new pride & joy. 1.4 million per week, 76 million per year.
And when there are more people, there are more mouths to be fed. In fact, there is more demand for all the stuff that we need to live: energy, water, food, and space. Imagine that the world's population has tripled since the 1950's. That means that we need three times as much oil, wood, coal, uranium, electricity, potable water, fish, meat, cereals, vegetables, and of course space. Space to live, but also to grow the food and produce the goods that we need.
But wait a minute, the earth didn't increase by threefold now did it? Nope, it didn't. We still have the same amount of natural resources we had then, or actually, less, as we've kept consuming in the mean time. So this decreasing amount of natural resources has to be shared with an increasing amount of people. Oh, and did I mention that these people are consuming more individually as well?
And what will we do when shortages appear? Take water for instance. If the beginning of a river flows through one country, and they use all the water they need, and leave too little water to flow into the following country, what would you do? Fight over it? And how about oil? If your country has a monopoly on oil, and shortages appear. Would you still export it to the rest of the world? And if you'd keep it to yourself, do you think that the other countries will be ok with that?
When it comes down to the world's population, is it really the more the merrier?
wn.com/Overpopulation The More The Merrier
