Gold Coin Shortage? Ron Paul Questions U.S. Mint
07/20/2010 - http://www.RonPaul.com
The United States Mint has a gold problem. As demand for precious metal in the futures indexes and in physical gold bullion coins increases as the dollar weakens, there's been a run on the Mint. Don't worry, there's no shortage of gold. It's just that the Mint doesn't have the resources to make it into coins due to outsourcing and budget cuts decades ago.

When the framers of the U.S. Constitution created a new government for their untried Republic, they realized the critical need for a respected monetary system. Soon after the Constitution's ratification, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton personally prepared plans for a national Mint. On April 2, 1792, Congress passed The Coinage Act, which created the Mint and authorized construction of a Mint building in the nation's capitol, Philadelphia. This was the first federal building erected under the Constitution.
Since our institution's founding in 1792, the men and women of the United States Mint have taken great pride in rendering the story of our nation in enduring examples of numismatic art. To hold a coin or medal produced by the U.S. Mint is to connect to the founding principles of our nation and the makings of our economy.
Here and abroad, people cherish our products because they are stores of value as well as exquisite encapsulations of America's ideals. In forms designed to be passed from hand to hand and saved from generation to generation, the coins we mint reflect our shared history and traditions. Whether it is learning to count with pennies, understanding the value of saving through the weight of a piggy bank or remembering the coin toss at your first football game, coins connect us to many of our fondest memories.
Perhaps most importantly, the United States Mint connects us with the core values of America. From the great promise of our "E Pluribus Unum" credo beneath the banner of Liberty, each coin is a small share in the ongoing American Experience, linking us in an unbroken line to our country's—and the Mint's—origins in the Constitution.
Since Congress created the United States Mint on April 2, 1792, it has grown tremendously. In recent history, circulating coin production has varied between 4 billion and 10 billion coins annually. In Fiscal Year 2010, the United States Mint generated a record $3.89 billion in annual revenues. As a self-funded agency, the United States Mint turns revenues beyond its operating expenses over to the General Fund of the Treasury.

...In the beginning, hammered coinage or cast coinage were the chief means of coin minting, with resulting production runs numbering as little as the hundreds or thousands. In modern mints, coin dies are manufactured in large numbers and planchets are made into milled coins by the billions.

Around 1550 the German silversmith Marx Schwab invented coining with the screw press. Henry II of France (reign 1547-1559) imported the new machines: rolling mill, punch and screw press. 8 to 12 men took over from each other every quarter of an hour to maneuver the arms driving the screw which struck the medals. Henry II came up against hostility on the part of the coin makers, so the process was only to be used for coins of small value, medals and tokens. In 1645 it came into general use for minting coins.

The Constitution of the United States of America provides that the United States Congress shall have the power "To coin Money". Laws implementing this power are currently codified in Section 5112 of Title 31 of the United States Code. Section 5112 prescribes the forms in which the United States dollars shall be issued. Those coins are both designated in Section 5112 as "legal tender" in payment of debts. The Sacagawea dollar is one example of the copper alloy dollar. The pure silver dollar is known as the American Silver Eagle. Section 5112 also provides for the minting and issuance of other coins, which have values ranging from one cent to fifty dollars.[18] These other coins are more fully described in Coins of the United States dollar. state shall... make any thing but gold and silver coin a tender in payment of debts" clause in article 1, section 10 of the United States Constitution.
The Gold Standard Act of 1900 abandoned the bimetallic standard and defined the dollar as 23.22 grains (1.505 g) of gold, equivalent to setting the price of 1 troy ounce of gold at $20.67. Silver coins continued to be issued for circulation until 1964, when all silver was removed from dimes and quarters, and the half dollar was reduced to 40% silver. Silver half dollars were last issued for circulation in 1970.
Gold coins were confiscated by Executive Order 6102 issued in 1933 by Franklin Roosevelt. The gold standard was changed to 13.71 grains (0.888 g), equivalent to setting the price of 1 troy ounce of gold at $35. U.S. dollar freely float on currency markets.
According to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the largest note it ever printed was the $100,000 Gold Certificate, Series 1934. These notes were printed from December 18, 1934 through January 9, 1935, and were issued by the Treasurer of the United States to Federal Reserve Banks only against an equal amount of gold bullion held by the Treasury. These notes were used for transactions between Federal Reserve Banks and were not circulated among the general public.
The U.S. Constitution provides that Congress shall have the power to "borrow money on the credit of the United States". Congress has exercised that power by authorizing Federal Reserve Banks to issue Federal Reserve Notes. Those notes are "obligations of the United States" and "shall be redeemed in lawful money on demand at the Treasury Department of the United States, in the city of Washington, District of Columbia, or at any Federal Reserve bank. "Federal Reserve Notes are designated by law as "legal tender" for the payment of debts. Congress has also authorized the issuance of more than 10 other types of banknotes, including the United States Note[44] and the Federal Reserve Bank Note. The Federal Reserve Note is the only type that remains in circulation since the 1970s.
Currently printed denominations are $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Notes above the $100 denomination stopped being printed in 1946 and were officially withdrawn from circulation in 1969. These notes were used primarily in inter-bank transactions or by organized crime; it was the latter usage that prompted President Richard Nixon to issue an executive order in 1969 halting their use. With the advent of electronic banking, they became less necessary. Notes in denominations of $500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, and $100,000 were all produced at one time; see large denomination bills in U.S. currency for details. These notes are now collector's items and are worth more than their face value to collectors.
Though still predominantly green, post-2004 series incorporate other colors to better distinguish different denominations. As a result of a 2008 decision in an accessibility lawsuit filed by the American Council of the Blind, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is planning to implement a raised tactile feature in the next redesign of each note, except the $1 and the version of the $100 bill already in process. It also plans larger, higher-contrast numerals, more color differences, and distribution of currency readers to assist the visually impaired during the transition period.

The problem lies in manufacturing the blanks. The blank planchets are not made at the Mint, which hasn't had the production capacity for this stage of the minting process since the budget cuts of 1981.

Here's one of two ads for the new Sacagawea coin that was introduced as a replacement for the $1 note in 2000.
It's interesting to note that George Washington's comments about not being on the coin would become irrelevant seven years later when the presidential dollar series was later introduced.
This coin was not widely accepted as it should have been due to the mistake of the mint not withdrawing the $1 note like other countries have done with larger denomination coins. I myself would use it more if the $1 note was withdrawn.
"It's so... money."
This aired on local Chicago TV in 2000

We have been collectively hoodwinked into believing that our paper currencies are 'as good as gold'. Nothing could be further from the truth. Originally, our paper currency was a receipt for gold or silver held on deposit. But since 1971, all world currencies have been fiat -backed by nothing of physical value. Take a $10 bill from your wallet. Do you really think that the paper is worth $10? Welcome to the Matrix...

Welcome to the 2nd episode in our 10 part series! Across the globe, central banks are creating currency out of thin air at an exponential rate. Where does it get its value? Here's the evil part. The new currency simply steals from the value of your savings account, your retirement fund, it dilutes the value of all existing currency. Using history as our guide, it is easy to see that unlimited currency creation has always resulted in inflation and failure of the monetary system. The only proven method to protect yourself and come out ahead of the game - you guessed it, gold and silver.
Whoever it was that said that 'History Never Repeats', didn't read much history!

Welcome to the 3rd episode in our 10 part series! Have you ever wondered where all that currency came from to bail out the banking sector, the 'too big to fail' guys? Answer: Thin air! The currency to pay for all these crazy wars? Thin air! Bailing out Greece and who knows who next? Thin air! The unlimited creation of this worthless unbacked currency has serious effects for you and me. We feel it as price inflation in our day to day lives. Our incomes don't keep pace with inflation and we struggle. It is slow at first, but picks up speed quickly. The government inevitably tries to spend more to prop up the economy, going deeper and deeper into debt....pouring fuel on the fire. It's a predictable cycle that has happened many times before throughout history. When a government is given the power to create as much currency as they like...they will. The end result being a rush into precious metals as the government-issued currency loses value faster and faster due to the erosion of faith held in it by the public. Ask the Greeks and the Romans about it. Recent examples include such monetary catastrophes as Weimar Germany, Argentina and Zimbabwe. Hundred trillion dollar note anyone?
"When a government abuses its currency system, gold will do this" - Mike Maloney
But this time...it's global. For the first time in human history, all world currencies are backed by nothing of physical value. Think about that for a moment. Fiat currencies are losing the faith of the public day by day. We are about to live through the greatest gold and silver rush in history.

Gold standards are not the holy grail of monetary systems. They merely open up the possiblity of governments abusing the system and printing more receipts for gold and silver (cash) than they have in physical metal. One of the reasons that we are living through such turmoil is that we allowed governments to cheat gold. A more stable system: use gold and silver themselves as money, as the free market has demanded for the last 2000 years.

This opportunity isn't going to last for long...there are these brief moments that go by, as far as historic time, they go by in the blink of an eye...where the safest place to be, the place where people run to, to protect their financial well being during economic crisis, gold and silver, they have been the safe haven for your finances for 5000 years. And there are these brief moments in history where they simultaneously become the asset class that has the single greatest potential gains in absolute purchasing power...and we're in one of those RIGHT NOW."

Hi folks. This is a response to the question from BGBurch, thanks mate. There has been so much talk about manipulation lately...word is really getting out. There are two chapters devoted to it in the film "Why Gold and Silver?", but I figured now would be a good time to post some of Mike's thoughts from last week on this topic. This is just a short snippet of a two hour conversation, eventually we will edit this into another production but for now here's a raw untouched clip. More to follow. Trailers for the movie coming shortly. Exciting times huh? How do you feel about all this?

Lauryn Hill's Final Hour - Track 7 of Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill. No copyright infringement intended. Lyrics:
I treat this like my thesis
Well written topic
Broken down into pieces
I introduce then produce
Words so profuse
It's abuse how I juice up this beat
Like I'm do-do
Two people both equal
Like I'm Gemini
Rather simeon
If I Jimmy on this lock I could pop it
You can't stop it
Drop it
Your whole crew microscopic
Like particles while I make international articles
And on the cover
Don't discuss the baby mother business
I been in this third LP you can't tell me, I witness
First handed I'm candid
You can't stand it
Respect demanded
And get flown around the planet
Rock Hard like granite or steel
People feel Lauryn Hill from New-Ark to Israel
And this is real
So I keep makin' the street's ballads
While you lookin' for dressin' to go with your tossed salad
You could get the money
You could get the power
But keep your eyes on the final hour (x2)
I'm about to change the focus
From the richest to the brokest
I wrote this opus
To reverse the hypnosis
Whoever's closest
To the lines gonna win it
You gonna fall tryin to ball
While my team win the pennant
I'm about to be in it
For a minute
Then run for senate
Make a slum lord be the tenant
Give his money to kids to spend it
And then amend it
Every law that ever prevented
Our survival since our arrival
Documented in the bible
Like Moses and Aaron
Things gonna change, it's apparent
And all the transparent gonna
Be seen through
Let God redeem you
Keep your deen true
You can get the green too
Watch out what you cling to
Observe how a queen do
And I remain calm readin' the 73rd Psalm
Coz with all this on I got the world in my palm
You could get the money
You could get the power
But keep your eyes on the final hour(x2)
Now I be breakin' bread sippin' Manichevitz wine
Pay no mind party like it's 1999
But when it comes down to ground beef like Palestine
Say your rhymes, let's see if that get you out your bind
Now I'm a get the mozzarella like a Rockerfeller
Still be in the church of Lalibela
Singing hymns acappella
Whether posed in Maribella in Couture
Or collecting residuals from off 'The Score'
I'm making sure
I'm with the 144
I've been here before this ain't a battle this is war
Word to Boonie
I make salaat like a Sunni
Get diplomatic immunity in every ghetto community
Had opportunity went from
Hoodshock to Hood-chic
But it ain't what you cop
It's about what you keep
And even if there are leaks
you can't capsize this ship
Cause I baptize my lips every time I take a sip
You could get the money
You could get the power
But keep your eyes on the final hour.

From the richest to the brokest
I wrote this opus
To reverse the hypnosis
Whoever's closest
To the lines gonna win it
You gonna fall tryin to ball
While my team win the pennant
I'm about to be in it
For a minute
Then run for senate
Make a slum lord be the tenant
Give his money to kids to spend it
And then amend it
Every law that ever prevented
Our survival since our arrival
Documented in the bible
Like Moses and Aaron
Things gonna change, it's apparent
And all the transparent gonna
Be seen through
Let God redeem you
Keep your deen true
You can get the green too
Watch out what you cling to
Observe how a queen do
And I remain calm readin' the 73rd Psalm
Coz with all this on I got the world in my palm
You could get the money
You could get the power
But keep your eyes on the final hour(x2)
Now I be breakin' bread sippin' Manichevitz wine
Pay no mind party like it's 1999
But when it comes down to ground beef like Palestine
Say your rhymes, let's see if that get you out your bind
Now I'm a get the mozzarella like a Rockerfeller
Still be in the church of Lalibela
Singing hymns acappella
Whether posed in Maribella in Couture
Or collecting residuals from off 'The Score'
I'm making sure
I'm with the 144
I've been here before this ain't a battle this is war
Word to Boonie
I make salaat like a Sunni
Get diplomatic immunity in every ghetto community
Had opportunity went from
Hoodshock to Hood-chic
But it ain't what you cop
It's about what you keep
And even if there are leaks
you can't capsize this ship
Cause I baptize my lips every time I take a sip
You could get the money
You could get the power
But keep your eyes on the final hour.
