NGOs' Mercantilist Conflicts of Interest
NGOs' Mercantilist Conflicts of Interest
Large NGOs resemble multinational corporations in structure and operation. They are hierarchical, maintain large media, government lobbying, and PR departments, head-hunt, invest proceeds in professionally-managed portfolios, compete in government tenders, and own a variety of unrelated businesses. The Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development owns the license for second mobile phone operator in Afghanistan - among other businesses. In this respect, NGOs are more like cults than like civic organizations. Many NGOs promote economic causes - anti-globalization, the banning of child labor, the relaxing of intellectual property rights, or fair payment for agricultural products. Many of these causes are both worthy and sound. Alas, most NGOs lack economic expertise and inflict damage on the alleged recipients of their beneficence. NGOs are at times manipulated by - or collude with - industrial groups and political parties. It is telling that the denizens of many developing countries suspect the West and its NGOs of promoting an agenda of trade protectionism. Stringent - and expensive - labor and environmental provisions in international treaties may well be a ploy to fend off imports based on cheap labor and the competition they wreak on well-ensconced domestic industries and their political stooges.- published: 15 Jan 2014

Mercantilist, our proto, capitalists
Mercantilist, our proto, capitalists
Video introduction Audio elaboration Mercantilist, our proto, capitalists are opportunists whose loyalty is to whomever will be their enablers of their 'commerce', because they have an acute sense of the creature needs of their environment and they adapt like chameleons to whatever becomes their environment.. Because of this, the IDEAS of liberty and FREEDOM are pushed forward while these necessary, parasitic logisticians hang on for what they can scavenge and arbitrage in the conditions. The names of the vectors may change over time, their purpose is a constant, like birth and death. The degree of their 'control' is a function of the docility of tolerance of the masses, who are cursed by their covetousness and lust for the creature comforts.. The structure and technology of the present order is, less and less, not serving the tolerating docility of the masses, but agitating and organizing informal resistance which the 'criminal' element was the main former contentious demographic. The very things many speak of and advocate-the structure of labor and distribution of income- are now credible topics of serious consideration, if not militant to martial action. It won't happen today, tomorrow, this year, or the near horizon, but the structure-unlike in the 60's and early '70's where there was a belief in a democratic material prosperity-no longer provides that unquestionable hope, thus the article this was posted. Terra Incognita
My graduation project... from 2000!!! Pencil, paper and crayon!!!
Brief Film Summary
In the fifteenth century, a spanish man Carlos questions his actions and his life after living among Tupinambá indians in the Brazilian coast. His European mercantilist vision collides with the naturalism and innocence of the first inhabitants of Brazil.

Adam Smith: An Inquiry Concerning the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations
The Wealth of Nations is Smith's most famous work, and is one of the foundational texts in economics. In the course of his extensive and thorough critique of mercantilist policies that tie together economic and political processes and power, Smith formulates important theoretical insights about the role of specialization in increasing productivity and income, market prices and their adjustments, labor and capital as complements in production, domestic and foreign trade as mutually beneficial value-creating processes, and the role of government in providing defense, enforcing (negative) justice, and providing infrastructure that increases the extent of the market and enables general basic education.

Reading Comprehension - Inference (Excerpt from June 2, 2011 Thursdays With Ron)
Here's the passage referenced in the video:
For many years, historians thought that the development of capitalism had not faced serious challenges in the United States. Writing in the early twentieth century, Progressive historians sympathized with the battles waged by farmers and small producers against large capitalists in the late nineteenth century, but they did not question the widespread acceptance of laissez-faire (unregulated) capitalism throughout American history. Similarly, Louis Hartz, who sometimes disagreed with the Progressives, argued that Americans accepted laissez-faire capitalism without challenge because they lacked a feudal, precapitalist past. Recently, however, some scholars have argued that even though laissez-faire became the prevailing ethos in nineteenth-century America, it was not accepted without struggle. Laissez-faire capitalism, they suggest, clashed with existing religious and communitarian norms that imposed moral constraints on acquisitiveness to protect the weak from the predatory, the strong from corruption, and the entire culture from materialist excess. Buttressed by mercantilist notions that government should be both regulator and promoter of economic activity, these norms persisted long after the American Revolution helped unleash the economic forces that produced capitalism. These scholars argue that even in the late nineteenth century, with the government's role in the economy considerably diminished, laissez-faire had not triumphed completely. Hard times continued to revive popular demands for regulating business and softening the harsh edges of laissez-faire capitalism.
The passage suggests that the scholars mentione din the first highlighted protion of ttext would agree with which ofthe following statements regarding the "norms" mentioned in the second highlighted protion of text?
(A) They provided a primary source of oppositon to the development of laissez-faire captialism in the United states in the ninteteenth century.
(B) Their appeal was undermined by difficult economic times in the United States at the end of the nineteenth century.
(C) They disappeared in the United States in the late nineteenth century because of the triumph of laissez-faire capitalism.
(D) They facilitated the successful implementation of mercantilist notions of government in the United States in the nineteenth century.
(E) They are now recognized by historians as having been an important part of the ideology of the American Revolution.

Empire in the Pre-Industrial World - Professor Richard J Evans FBA
The first lecture in the series looks at the initial expansion of Europe, from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century.
It explores the great empires established by the British, Dutch, French, Ottomans, Portuguese, Russians and Spanish, and looks at their origins, their growth, and their mutual rivalries. It examines how these empires were ruled, the role of slavery in their establishment and administration, and their impact on the peoples they colonized.
To a degree these were 'mercantilist empires', extending European patterns of control to overseas territories and confining them to a particular, limited role as recipients of European manufactures and providers of raw materials on which to base it. Trade restrictions imposed by the colonizing powers were increasingly resented by emerging colonial elites. Most of the pre-industrial European empires collapsed with startling suddenness in the half-century from the mid-1770s to the mid-1820s, and the lecture concludes with a discussion of why this happened, and what remained afterwards.
