History
The pharmacy of Caleb Bradham, with a Pepsi dispenser
The drink Pepsi was first introduced as "Brad's Drink"[2] in New Bern, North Carolina, United States, in 1893 by Caleb Bradham, who made it at his drugstore where the drink was sold. It was renamed Pepsi Cola in 1898, named after the digestive enzyme pepsin and kola nuts used in the recipe. The original recipe also included sugar and vanilla.[3] Bradham sought to create a fountain drink that was appealing and would aid in digestion and boost energy.[2]

In 1903, Bradham moved the bottling of Pepsi-Cola from his drugstore to a rented warehouse. That year, Bradham sold 7,968 gallons of syrup. The next year, Pepsi was sold in six-ounce bottles, and sales increased to 19,848 gallons. In 1909, automobile race pioneer Barney Oldfield was the first celebrity to endorse Pepsi-Cola, describing it as "A bully drink...refreshing, invigorating, a fine bracer before a race." The advertising theme "Delicious and Healthful" was then used over the next two decades.[4] In 1926, Pepsi received its first logo redesign since the original design of 1905. In 1929, the logo was changed again.
In 1931, at the depth of the Great Depression, the Pepsi-Cola Company entered bankruptcy – in large part due to financial losses incurred by speculating on the wildly fluctuating sugar prices as a result of World War I. Assets were sold and Roy C. Megargel bought the Pepsi trademark.[3] Megargel was unsuccessful, and soon Pepsi's assets were purchased by Charles Guth, the President of Loft, Inc. Loft was a candy manufacturer with retail stores that contained soda fountains. He sought to replace Coca-Cola at his stores' fountains after Coke refused to give him a discount on syrup. Guth then had Loft's chemists reformulate the Pepsi-Cola syrup formula.
On three separate occasions between 1922 and 1933, The Coca-Cola Company was offered the opportunity to purchase the Pepsi-Cola company, and it declined on each occasion.[5]

The original trademark application for Pepsi-Cola was filed on September 23, 1902 with registration approved on June 16, 1903. In the application's statement, Caleb Bradham describes the trademark, and indicated that the mark was in continuous use for his business since August 1, 1901. The Pepsi-Cola's description is a flavoring-syrup for soda water. The trademark expired on April 15, 1904.

Nikola Tesla (Serbian Cyrillic: Никола Тесла; 10 July 1856 – 7 January 1943) was a Serbian American[2][3][4][5] inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system.[6]
Tesla gained experience in telephony and electrical engineering before immigrating to the United States in 1884 to work for Thomas Edison in New York City. He soon struck out on his own with financial backers, setting up laboratories and companies to develop a range of electrical devices. His patented AC induction motor and transformer were licensed by George Westinghouse, who also hired Tesla for a short time as a consultant. His work in the formative years of electric power development was also involved in the corporate struggle between making alternating current or direct current the power transmission standard, referred to as the War of Currents. Tesla went on to pursue his ideas of wireless lighting and electricity distribution in his high-voltage, high-frequency power experiments in New York and Colorado Springs and made early (1893) pronouncements on the possibility of wireless communication with his devices. He tried to put these ideas to practical use in his ill-fated attempt at intercontinental wireless transmission, which was his unfinished Wardenclyffe Tower project.[7] In his lab he also conducted a range of experiments with mechanical oscillators/generators, electrical discharge tubes, and early X-ray imaging. He even built a wireless controlled boat, one of the first ever exhibited.
Tesla was renowned for his achievements and showmanship, eventually earning him a reputation in popular culture as an archetypal "mad scientist."[8] His patents earned him a considerable amount of money, much of which was used to finance his own projects with varying degrees of success.[9]:121,154 He lived most of his life in a series of New York hotels, through his retirement. He died on 7 January 1943.[10] His work fell into relative obscurity after his death, but in 1960 the General Conference on Weights and Measures named the SI unit of magnetic flux density the tesla in his honor.[11] Tesla has experienced a resurgence in interest in popular culture since the 1990s.

In a typical lightning strike, 500 megajoules of electric potential energy is converted into the same amount of energy in other forms, mostly light energy, sound energy and thermal energy.
In physics, energy is a property of objects which can be transferred to other objects or converted into different forms, but cannot be created or destroyed.
The ability of a system to perform work is a common description. But, it is difficult to give a comprehensive definition of energy because of its many forms. In SI units, energy is measured in joules, the energy transferred to an object by the mechanical work of moving it 1 metre against a force of 1 newton.
All of the many forms of energy are convertible to other kinds of energy, and obey the conservation of energy. Common energy forms include the kinetic energy of a moving object, the radiant energy carried by light, the potential energy stored by an object's position in a force field (gravitational, electric or magnetic), elastic energy stored by stretching solid objects, chemical energy released when a fuel burns, and the thermal energy due to an object's temperature.
According to mass–energy equivalence, any object that has mass when stationary, (called rest mass) also has an equivalent amount of energy whose form is called rest energy. Conversely, any additional energy above the rest energy will increase an object's mass. For example, if you had a sensitive enough scale, you could measure an increase in mass after heating an object. Our Sun transforms nuclear potential energy to other forms of energy; its total mass does not decrease due to that in itself (since it still contains the same total energy even if in different forms), but its mass does decrease when the energy escapes out to its surroundings, largely as radiant energy.
For closed systems, the first law of thermodynamics states that a system's energy is constant unless energy is transferred in or out by work or heat, and that no energy is lost in transfer. This means that it is impossible to create or destroy energy. The second law of thermodynamics states that all systems doing work always lose some energy as waste heat. This creates a limit to the amount of energy that can do work by a heating process, a limit called the available energy. Mechanical and other forms of energy can be transformed in the other direction into thermal energy without such limitations. The total energy of a system can be calculated by adding up all forms of energy in the system. Examples of energy transfer and transformation include generating or making use of electric energy, performing chemical reactions, or lifting an object. Lifting against gravity performs work on the object and stores gravitational potential energy; if it falls, gravity does work on the object which transforms the potential energy to the kinetic energy associated with its speed.

DataTone: Managing Ambiguity in Natural Language Interfaces for Data Visualization

Abstract:
Answering questions with data is a difficult and time-consuming process. Visual dashboards and templates make it easy to get started, but asking more sophisticated questions often requires learning a tool designed for expert analysts. Natural language interaction allows users to ask questions directly in complex programs without having to learn how to use an interface. However, natural language is often ambiguous. In this work we propose a mixed-initiative approach to managing ambiguity in natural language interfaces for data visualization. We model ambiguity throughout the process of turning a natural language query into a visualization and use algorithmic disambiguation coupled with interactive ambiguity widgets. These widgets allow the user to resolve ambiguities by surfacing system decisions at the point where the ambiguity matters. Corrections are stored as constraints and influence subsequent queries. We have implemented these ideas in a system, DataTone. In a comparative study, we find that DataTone is easy to learn and lets users ask questions without worrying about syntax and proper question form.

Mujahideen (Arabic: مجاهد muǧāhid, nominative plural مجاهدون muǧāhidūn, oblique plural مجاهدين muǧāhidīn "strugglers" or "people doing jihad") is a term that Muslims use to describe those they see as Muslims who struggle in the path of Allah. The word is from the same Arabic triliteral root as jihad ("struggle"). In recent years, Mujahideen has been most closely associated by the west with radical Islam, encompassing several militant groups and struggles.

The rate of growth in healthcare costs is not sustainable and increasing cost containment pressure will be brought to bear on the healthcare sector of the US economy. In addition, the advent of large-scale computation, data mining, big data and analytics provides tools for healthcare practitioners, particularly those in laboratory medicine and pathology, to more closely examine patterns of resource use and medical effectiveness of testing. This work will require much better integration of data from clinical, operational, and financial sources. Through the use of integrated medical analytics, one can identify unnecessary testing using literature-based rules for identification of superior tests, testing algorithms, or tests with low diagnostic utility. When combined with financial data, the annual cost of unnecessary testing for just over twenty testing scenarios represents several hundred thousand dollars in variable costs for hospital systems and many millions of dollars in paid out claims for four regional US payers. To make most efficient use of integrated medical analytics, practitioners of the future will also demonstrate value to their healthcare systems through the use of textual disambiguation to structured data forms and big data storage/retrieval as well as knowledge of data governance and data provenance.

An unidentified flying object, or UFO, in its most general definition, is any apparent anomaly in the sky that is not identifiable as a known object or phenomenon. Culturally, UFOs are associated with claims of visitation by extraterrestrial life or government-related conspiracy theories, and have become popular subjects in fiction. While UFOs are often later identified, sometimes identification may not be possible owing to the usually low quality of evidence related to UFO sightings (generally anecdotal evidence and eyewitness accounts).
Stories of fantastical celestial apparitions have been told since antiquity, but the term "UFO" (or "UFOB") was officially created in 1953 by the United States Air Force (USAF) to serve as a catch-all for all such reports. In its initial definition, the USAF stated that a "UFOB" was "any airborne object which by performance, aerodynamic characteristics, or unusual features, does not conform to any presently known aircraft or missile type, or which cannot be positively identified as a familiar object." Accordingly, the term was initially restricted to those fraction of cases which remained unidentified after investigation, as the USAF was interested in potential national security reasons and/or "technical aspects" (see Air Force Regulation 200-2).
During the late 1940s and through the 1950s, UFOs were often referred to popularly as "flying saucers" or "flying discs". The term UFO became more widespread during the 1950s, at first in technical literature, but later in popular use. UFOs garnered considerable interest during the Cold War, an era associated with a heightened concern for national security. Various studies have concluded that the phenomenon does not represent a threat to national security nor does it contain anything worthy of scientific pursuit (e.g., 1951 Flying Saucer Working Party, 1953 CIA Robertson Panel, USAF Project Blue Book, Condon Committee)..

The Internet of Things (IoT) alike the semantic web, cloud computing and other interdisciplinary areas are considered as crucial in the process for designing the Future Internet. Likewise cloud-based systems have influenced end users perspective towards understanding data sharing and efficient computing processing over the Internet (mainly from an economical perspective), the Internet of Things is gradually changing how people see, understand and live with the technology and particularly "sensors". In this presentation not a complex but simple and clear explanation about the Internet of Things, and the major areas associated (i.e. Cloud Computing and Big Data Processing/Analytics) will be introduced to then make a brief revision of the most relevant research challenges in the IoT services and applications to finally understand the relevance and/or relation the IoT area get with the Semantic Web.
Additionally, in this talk the most IoT related INSIGHT projects will be cited and IoT Cloud Data related application use cases introduced. It is expected that the attendee will end up with a general understanding of what is IoT and the introduction to the IoT Cloud-Based Data Service systems and what is the relation between Internet of Things and The Semantic Web. This presentation also serves as an overview about the cloud computing systems requirements supporting IoT systems. INSIGHT-Galway plays a leading role in Europe in the IoT Area (from applied research, management and policy makers) the activities conducted in INSIGTH and particularly in the USM group are influencing the continuous evolution of the Internet of Things activities in Europe.

Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that has grown to become one of the largest online repositories of encyclopedic knowledge, with millions of articles available for a large number of languages. In fact, Wikipedia editions are available for more than 200 languages, with a number of entries varying from a few pages to more than two million articles per language. In this talk, I will describe the use of Wikipedia as a resource for automatic keyword extraction and word sense disambiguation, and show how this online encyclopedia can be used to achieve state-of-the-art results on both these tasks. I will also show how the two methods can be combined into a system able to automatically enrich a text with links to encyclopedic knowledge. Given an input document, the system identifies the important concepts in the text and automatically links these concepts to the corresponding Wikipedia pages. Evaluations of the system showed that the automatic annotations are reliable and hardly distinguishable from manual annotations. Additionally, an evaluation of the system in an educational environment showed that the availability of encyclopedic knowledge within easy reach of a learner can improve both the quality of the knowledge acquired and the time needed to obtain such knowledge.

Anonymous (used as a mass noun) is a loosely associated international network of activist and hacktivist entities. A website nominally associated with the group describes it as "an internet gathering" with "a very loose and decentralized command structure that operates on ideas rather than directives". The group became known for a series of well-publicized publicity stunts and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks on government, religious, and corporate websites.
Anonymous originated in 2003 on the imageboard 4chan, representing the concept of many online and offline community users simultaneously existing as an anarchic, digitized global brain. Anonymous members (known as "Anons") can be distinguished in public by the wearing of stylised Guy Fawkes masks.
In its early form, the concept was adopted by a decentralized online community acting anonymously in a coordinated manner, usually toward a loosely self-agreed goal, and primarily focused on entertainment, or "lulz". Beginning with 2008's Project Chanology—a series of protests, pranks, and hacks targeting the Church of Scientology—the Anonymous collective became increasingly associated with collaborative hacktivism on a number of issues internationally. Individuals claiming to align themselves with Anonymous undertook protests and other actions (including direct action) in retaliation against anti-digital piracy campaigns by motion picture and recording industry trade associations. Later targets of Anonymous hacktivism included government agencies of the US, Israel, Tunisia, Uganda, and others; child pornography sites; copyright protection agencies; the Westboro Baptist Church; and corporations such as PayPal, MasterCard, Visa, and Sony. Anons have publicly supported WikiLeaks and the Occupy movement. Related groups LulzSec and Operation AntiSec carried out cyberattacks on US government agencies, media, video game companies, military contractors, military personnel, and police officers, resulting in the attention of law enforcement to the groups' activities. It has been described as being anti-Zionist, and has threatened to erase Israel from the Internet and engaged in the "#OpIsrael" cyber-attacks of Israeli websites on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in 2013.
Dozens of people have been arrested for involvement in Anonymous cyberattacks, in countries including the US, UK, Australia, the Netherlands, Spain, and Turkey. Evaluations of the group's actions and effectiveness vary widely. Supporters have called the group "freedom fighters"and digital Robin Hoods while critics have described them as "a cyber lynch-mob" or "cyber terrorists".In 2012, Time called Anonymous one of the "100 most influential people" in the world.

ABSTRACT
Relevance feedback was one of the first interactive information retrieval
techniques to help systems learn more about users' interests. Relevance
feedback has been used in a variety of IR applications including query
expansion, term disambiguation, user profiling, filtering and
personalization. Initial relevance feedback techniques were explicit, in
that they required the user's active participation. Many of today's
relevance feedback techniques are implicit and based on users' information
seeking behaviors, such as the pages they choose to visit, the frequency
with which they visit pages, and the length of time pages are displayed.
Although this type of information is available in great abundance, it is
difficult to interpret without understanding more about the user's search
goals and context.
In this talk, I will address the following questions: what techniques are
available to help us learn about users' interests and preferences? What
types of evidence are available through a user's interactions with the
system and with the information provided by the system? What do we need to
know to accurately interpret and use this evidence?
I will address the first two questions by presenting an overview of
relevance feedback research in information retrieval. I will address the
third question by presenting results of some of my own research that
examined the online information seeking behaviors of users during a
14-week period and the context in which these behaviors took place.
Speaker: Diane Kelly
Diane is an assistant professor in the School of Information and Library Sciences at the University of North Carolina. Her research interests, in her own words: "I am interested in the design and evaluation of systems that support interactive information retrieval. My research explores techniques that support interactive information retrieval at the search interface, such as those used for explicit and implicit relevance feedback. My research also focuses on user modeling and personalization. Specifically, I am interested in identifying and evaluating how an online information system can learn and use the document preferences of its users through monitoring observable behaviors, such as display time and retention. I am also interested in understanding how contextual variables, such as specific task and topic, affect this relationship, and how these variables can be measured and tracked over time."

Bilingual sentence-aligned parallel corpora, or bitexts, are a useful resource for solving many computational linguistics problems including part-of speech tagging, syntactic parsing, named entity recognition, word sense disambiguation, sentiment analysis, etc.; they are also a critical resource for some real-world applications such as statistical machine translation (SMT) and cross-language information retrieval. Unfortunately, building large bi-texts is hard, and thus most of the 6,500+ world languages remain resource-poor in bi-texts. However, many resource-poor languages are related to some resource-rich language, with whom they overlap in vocabulary and share cognates, which offers opportunities for using their bi-texts.
We explore various options for bi-text reuse: (i) direct combination of bi-texts, (ii) combination of models trained on such bi-texts, and (iii) a sophisticated combination of (i) and (ii).
We further explore the idea of generating bitexts for a resource-poor language by adapting a bi-text for a resource-rich language. We build a lattice of adaptation options for each word and phrase, and we then decode it using a language model for the resource-poor language. We compare word- and phrase-level adaptation, and we further make use of cross-language morphology. For the adaptation, we experiment with (a) a standard phrase-based SMT decoder, and (b) a specialized beam-search adaptation decoder.
Finally, we observe that for closely-related languages, many of the differences are at the subword level. Thus, we explore the idea of reducing translation to character-level transliteration. We further demonstrate the potential of combining word- and character-level models.

Esotericism (or esoterism) signifies the holding of esoteric opinions or beliefs, that is, ideas preserved or understood by a small group of those specially initiated, or of rare or unusual interest. The term derives from the Greek ἐσωτερικός (esôterikos), a compound of ἔσω (esô): "within", thus pertaining to interiority or mysticism. Its antonym is "exoteric".
The term can also refer to the academic study of esoteric religious movements and philosophies, or to the study of those religious movements and philosophies whose proponents distinguish their beliefs, practices, and experiences from mainstream exoteric and more dogmatic institutionalized traditions.
Examples of esoteric religious movements and philosophies include Alchemy, Astrology, Anthroposophy, early Christian mysticism, Freemasonry, Gnosticism, Kabbalah, Neoplatonism, Magic, Merkabah mysticism, Mesmerism, Rosicrucianism, Taoism, Numerology, Swedenborgianism, Scientology, Spiritualism, the Alawites, the Theosophy of Jacob Böhme and his followers, and the Theosophical revivalist movement associated with Helena Blavatsky.
Although esotericism refers to an exploration of the hidden meanings and symbolism in various philosophical, historical, and religious texts, the texts themselves are often central to mainstream religions. For example, the Bible and the Torah are considered esoteric material.

The performer is commonly known as a comic, stand-up comic, stand-up comedian, or simply a stand-up.[1] In stand-up comedy, the comedian usually recites a grouping of humorous stories, jokes and one-liners typically called a monologue, routine, or act. Some stand-up comedians use props, music, or magic tricks to enhance their acts. Stand-up comedy is often performed in comedy clubs, bars, nightclubs, neo-burlesques, colleges, and theaters. Outside of live performance, stand-up is often distributed commercially via television, DVD, and the internet
