Phuket (Thai: ภูเก็ต, [pʰūː.kèt]) is one of the southern provinces (changwat) of Thailand. It consists of the island of Phuket, the country's largest island, and another 32 smaller islands off its coast. It lies off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket Island is connected by the Sarasin Bridge to Phang Nga Province to the north. The next nearest province is Krabi, to the east across Phang Nga Bay.
Phuket Province has an area of 576 square kilometres (222 sq mi), somewhat less than that of Singapore, and is the second-smallest province of Thailand. It formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoys a rich and colorful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign ship logs of Portuguese, French, Dutch, and English traders. The region now derives much of its income from tourism.
The relatively recent name "Phuket" (of which the digraph ph represents an aspirated p) is apparently derived from the word bukit (Jawi: بوكيت) in Malay which means "hill", as this is what the island appears like from a distance. An alternative suggestion is that the name originates from two Thai words, "phu" (mountain) of "ket" (jewel), and this is said to be recorded in a Thai chronicle.
Coordinates: 7°53′17″N 98°23′51″E / 7.88806°N 98.39750°E / 7.88806; 98.39750
Phuket (/puːˈkɛt/ poo-KET; Thai: ภูเก็ต, Thai pronunciation: [pʰūː.kèt]) is a city in south-east Phuket Island, Thailand. It is the capital of Phuket Province. As of 2007 the city had a population of 75,573. It covers the subdistricts (tambon) Talat Yai (Thai: ตลาดใหญ่) and Talat Nuea (Thai: ตลาดเหนือ) of Mueang Phuket district.
Phuket is 862 km south of Bangkok.
Phuket is one of the oldest cities in Thailand. This old town used to be the important port on the west of the Malay Peninsula where Chinese immigrants first landed. Phuket used to be ruled by both Portugal and Holland.
The old buildings in Phuket town certainly represent its former prosperity. These old buildings were constructed when mining was an important Phuket industry. The architectural style, called "Sino-Portuguese", is European mixed with Chinese modern. Characteristic is a single or two-storey building with a narrow front compensated for by considerable depth. The tiles, doors, perforated windows and other details are all influenced by Chinese and European styles mixed together.

The Thalang National Museum was established in 1985 with the cooperation of the Fine Arts Department, on the 200th anniversary of the Thalang War to honour the two sisters who defended Phuket against the invading Burmese. It was inaugurated on March 14, 1989 by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirinthorn. The museum includes exhibits that detail the famous Battle of Thalang that involved the two heroines (the Heroines' Monument, in honour of the two famous sisters, sits at the traffic circle at the intersection of Pak Khlok, Thepkassatri and Srisoonthorn Roads) and also is a repository of the history, archaeology and culture of Phuket and the surrounding area including exhibits about tin mining history, the island's Chinese heritage and on the Sea Gypsies. Thalang Road is Phuket’s ‘historical road’ located in Phuket City Municipality. Formerly, it was the trading center of Phuket. Most of the houses located along this road were owned by wealthy Phuket people. The houses were built in Sino-Portuguese styles which reflect unique combinations between Chinese and Portuguese architectures. It is also a good example of multicultural community on the island since native Thais, Chinese, Muslims, Indians, and European people have lived together peacefully on the same road.

Staying at the Cape Panwa
I can see the iron horses' tracks
Pressed in the mud from the weight of all that steam and steel
But the wind don't blow where you want it to go
No, the wind just goes where it will and you follow
I can feel the breath of winter
Driving this snow across these newly-whited plains
Takes my breath from me and it leaves me falling
Then it picks me up again in its own strength
And I can hear the wild wind howling
And I can feel it in my bones
And I know that the howling will take me home
I can see some traveller's footprints
There's a little bit of blood in every step he made
I wonder what kind of burden he's bearing
That has cut him so deeply every step along the long, long way
In the west I see an evening
This scarlet thread stretched beneath the gathering dark
Red as the blood on the hands of the Savior
And rich as the mercy that flowed from His broken heart
And I can hear the wild wind howling
And I can feel it in my bones
And I know that the howling will take me home
These men of violence, they have made this a world full of wars
Oh God break Your silence and let Your justice shine forth
Show some mercy, Oh Lord
'Cause I can see a people dispossessed
Broken and brave in the face of so much fear
Driven from their homes by the greed of a nation
Whose treaties were as good as litter
Along the trail of their tears
I can see the Covenant colors
The sun and the rain have woven against the blue of the sky
And I know if we live we will live by His promise
I know He who made it and
And I'm sure that He would not lie
And I can hear the wild wind howling
And I can feel it in my bones
