In this show Zoe D'Amato, native of Nova Scotia uncovers hidden gems about a country she thought she had covered! Her journey through Eastern Canada starts at Cape Spear, the eastern most point of the North American continent. After exploring nearby St John's, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador Zoe takes to the water and her boat is immediately surrounded by Hump Back whales. Back on dry land she has dinner with two men who have their own stories to tell about one of the world's worst maritime disasters: the sinking of the Titanic. Determined to find out more about the disaster she travels to Halifax, Nova Scotia where she meets an expert on the subject and visits the cemetery where many of the Titanic's victims are buried. Continuing the theme Zoe checks out a haunted restaurant in the town, which used to be a funeral parlour, where ghostly going's on are still reported! Zoe then takes a drive 300km north to Cape Breton Island on the northern tip of Nova Scotia, or "New Scotland", to discover the thriving Gaelic culture. She is helped in this task by a whiskey-loving distillery manager and a whole bunch of Gaelic speaking Ceilidh-dancing locals. To blow away the cobwebs, the next day Zoe treks one of the many breath-taking walking trails in the region. Next, it's a ferry journey to Prince Edward Island, where using only peddle-power, Zoe zigzag's across the Island learning about the local passion for a form of horse racing called 'Harness racing', learns how to dig for massive bar clams and cooks them up on the beach, discovering just why Anne of Green Gables which was set on the Island is so popular in Japan, strange but true! Leaving Prince Edward Island via the 8 mile long Confederation Bridge, Zoe's next port of call is New Brunswick. Here she takes to the sea once more, well twice more actually, firstly to kayak amongst the rocks on a beach which has one of the highest tides in the world, a whopping 52 feet! And secondly to fish for lobsters and then be taught how to eat them the local way, i.e. not getting covered from head to foot in lobster juice. From here Zoe takes a flight inland to the historical city of Quebec. She arrives just in time for the New France Festival which celebrates the arrival of the European settlers into the region. Walking the streets of this beautiful city, Zoe unearths the bloody history of the battles that were fought here between the English and the French whose influence is still so strong, with 90% of the population speaking French as a first language. Zoe then discovers an even older local culture as she visits Wendake, a Huron-Wendat first nations reserve 15 km outside Quebec city which has a couple of surprises in store. For Zoe, the highlight of this flying visit to Quebec comes when she is invited to join in rehearsals by Cirque de Soleil, the unique circus troop who thrill audiences around the world with their daring do and are based here in Quebec. This part of Zoe's adventure ends as she watches her new found friends entertain at that evening's performance. The last leg of the journey sees Zoe fly to Toronto, the capital of Ontario where she tries her hand at the extreme sport of walking around the outside of the continent's highest structure, nearly 1200ft up, with no hand rail! Earning a well-deserved rest, she chills with Lifeguards on the beach, surprising in itself, as Toronto is hundreds of miles inland. From here it's a short drive down the road taking in the engineering marvel that is the St Lawrence Seaway, finishing her voyage of self-discovery overlooking the Majestic Niagara Falls.
