November 3,
Columbus citizens will elect a new mayor after 16 years of leadership from
Michael B. Coleman, who announced last fall that he would not seek a fifth term. The top vote-getters from the May primary who are both
Democrats are in the final heat of the hot race for the top job of the city.
Andy Ginther and
Zach Scott shared their views at the
CMC forum on Wednesday,
October 21.
Mike Thompson, news program director of
WOSU Public Media interviewed the candidates in was the last public appearance of the two before
Election Day 2015.
Neither of the candidates is a stranger to the community, nor are they newcomers to public service.
Ginther has served on
Columbus City Council since
2007 and currently presides as
Council President. Prior to
City Council service, he served on the
Board of Education for
Columbus City Schools. Ginther is robustly supported by outgoing Mayor
Coleman.
Ginther’s website says: “As mayor,
Andrew Ginther will build on our city’s success by investing in the future. With a fresh vision and commitment to doing what’s right not what’s politically easy,
Andrew will be a mayor for all of Columbus.“
Zach Scott has served as
Franklin County Sherriff since being appointed in
2011 and elected in
2012, and has numerous roles in public safety and service. His platform includes creating safer, stronger neighborhoods and fostering development that serves the entire community as well as downtown.
Scott’s website says: I’m running for Mayor because I have a fresh vision to move ALL our families forward.
I’ve been protecting Columbus families for over 30 years as a law enforcement professional, and my focus has always been on your safety.
The outcome will affect the momentum and trajectory of the country’s 15th largest city.
