Victor Jack Maddern (16 March 1928 – 22 June 1993) was an English actor.
Born in Seven Kings, Ilford, Essex, Maddern joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 15 and served in the Second World War from 1943 until 1946, when he was medically discharged. He subsequently trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). He made his first screen appearance in Seven Days to Noon in 1950, playing a reluctant soldier obliged to shoot a psychotic scientist.
One of his earliest stage roles was as Sam Weller in The Trial of Mr Pickwick (1952). Appearing as Helicon in a production of Albert Camus' play Caligula (1964), Maddern was singled out for critical praise, and in My Darling Daisy (1970) brought a fine Cockney bravado and arrogance to the portrait of the notorious Frank Harris. He also did two stints in the highly successful Agatha Christie play The Mousetrap - the longest-running production in London's West End.
From 1950 to the early 1990s, Maddern appeared in films and TV series, often portraying military types. He was usually cast as sergeants or corporals, as well as privates, seaman or airmen, played either straight or comically. Among his many TV roles were Private Gross in Denis Cannan's Captain Carvallo and old Lampwick's son-in-law in The Dick Emery Show. In 1963, he had a memorable guest role in Perry Mason as jewel smuggler Gilbert Tyrell, in the episode "The Case of the Floating Stones."
Operation Frankton was a commando raid on shipping in the German occupied French port of Bordeaux in the Bay of Biscay during the Second World War. The raid was carried out by a small unit of Royal Marines known as the Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment (RMBPD), part of Combined Operations.
The plan was for six canoes to be taken to the area of the Gironde estuary by submarine. They would then paddle by night to Bordeaux. On arrival they would attack the docked cargo ships with limpet mines and then escape overland to Spain. Twelve men from no.1 section were selected for the raid; including the commanding officer, Herbert 'Blondie' Hasler, and the reserve Marine Colley the total of the team numbered thirteen. Two men survived the raid: Hasler, and his no.2 in the canoe, Bill Sparks. Of the other eight, six were executed by the Germans while two died from hypothermia.
The British Prime Minister Winston Churchill believed the mission shortened the war by six months. The words of Lord Mountbatten, the commander of Combined Operations, are carved into a Purbeck stone at Royal Marines Poole (current headquarters of the SBS): Of the many brave and dashing raids carried out by the men of Combined Operations Command none was more courageous or imaginative than Operation Frankton.
Dixon of Dock Green was a BBC television series about daily life at a London police station, with the emphasis on petty crime, successfully controlled through common sense and human understanding. The central character was a mature and sympathetic police constable, George Dixon, played by Jack Warner in all of the 432 episodes, from 1955 to 1976.
Dixon was the embodiment of a typical 'bobby' who would be familiar with the area and its residents in which he patrolled and often lived there himself. The series contrasted sharply with later programmes such as Z-Cars, which reflected a more aggressive policing culture; however its popularity cannot be underestimated, retaining a faithful following throughout its run and being voted second most popular programme on British TV in 1961.
If Dixon was well-known to the public, the actor Jack Warner was even better known. Born Horace John Waters in London in 1895, Warner had been a comedian in radio and in his early film career. Starting in the early 1940s, he broadened his range to include dramatic roles, becoming a warmly human character actor in the process. But as well as playing in films with dramatic themes, such as The Blue Lamp, Warner - hugely popular by this time - continued to play in comedies such as the successful Huggett family programmes on BBC Radio and films made between 1948 and 1953.

It is the year 1797, war with the French Revolutionary government is raging as mutiny stalks the British Navy. On board H.M.S. Defiant, Captain Crawford (Alec Guinness) is having his own battle with arrogant First Lieutenant Scott-Padgett (Dirk Bogarde), while below deck a sailor (Anthony Quayle) is at the forefront of discontent. This is a stirring British film (made with American money!) and directed by Lewis Gilbert, a forerunner to "Master And Commander" if you like, although without the later film's technological advantages. Dirk Bogarde is riveting, dominating all his scenes, and it requires an actor of Alec Guinness's stature to prevent him from stealing the film entirely. The cast is near perfect, with supporting roles from the likes of Maurice Denham, Nigel Stock, Tom Bell, Murray...

The Searchlight Squad is a rag-tag band of men brought together by the war, who must now learn how to live and fight together in order to survive the war. As the Nazis continue their bombing raids, Lance Tomlinson (Victor Maddern) has to tread a fine line between upholding the a...
