Acknowledging the 1992 Consensus is the foundation for developing cross-Strait ties, said Taiwan experts Sunday in reaction to Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech over cross-Strait relations. President Xi's speech was delivered when joining a group deliberation of deputies from Shanghai at the annual session of the National People's Congress on Saturday, during which he warned against "Taiwan independence," saying that national secession should not be repeated. Taiwan experts were deeply touched by the conviction of building a community of common destiny. "From his talk I heard that he stood at a historical height, stressing the historical tragedy of national secession should never happen again, and conveying the message that people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait are brothers and sisters and is a community of common destiny. He also reiterated that the 1992 Consensus is the stable foundation for cross-Strait relations," said Yu Tzu-hsiang, Shih Hsin University in Taiwan. "In the end, he stressed that trade and cultural exchanges across the Strait should be strengthened. So 'historical height', 'compatriot affection', 'basic foundation' and 'strengthening exchanges' are four major points I heard from Xi's talk," said Yu. Tsai Ing-wen, candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), won Taiwan's leadership election in January after defeating Eric Chu, candidate of the Kuomintang (KMT), the party which has ruled Taiwan for the past eight years. Xi told the legislators Saturday that China's policy toward Taiwan is clear and consistent, and it will not change along with the change in Taiwan's political situation, adding that China will adhere to the 1992 Consensus as a political foundation, and continuously advance the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties. "Anyone who knows the development and history of cross-Strait ties know clearly that it is not easy for both sides to walk from fighting against each other to today's step. And today's situation was achieved thanks to many common understandings, among which the 1992 Consensus is the key. If we don't master this, it would be difficult to handle many problems," said Yu. "It is necessary to admit the 1992 Consensus. If we ran in the opposite direction of this consensus, the political foundation between Taiwan and Chinese mainland would disappear and how could the 23 agreements and three consensus we signed in the past last on? If Tsai Ing-wen kept blurring the 1992 Consensus and the fact that each side of the Taiwan Strait is a country, then cross-Strait ties, like President Xi said, would walk from peaceful development to disastrous instability," said Hsieh Minghui, executive director of Taiwan Competitiveness Forum.
