JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A powerful, shallow earthquake hit off the southwestern coast of Sumatra in Indonesia on Wednesday and could trigger a tsunami, officials said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The U.S. Geological Service said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.8. It was centred under the ocean at a depth of 24 kilometres, it said.
Shallow earthquakes are more likely to cause damage, but the USGS said the quake was located far from land, about 659 kilometres from the town of Muara Siberut.
Indonesian officials warned that the quake might trigger a tsunami.
Marjina, a resident of Sikakap in the Mentawai islands, about 690 kilometres from the epicenter, said the quake was felt only weakly there, but the tsunami warning caused panic among villagers, who ran to higher ground.
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology issued a marine warning for the distant Cocos and Christmas islands. It did not advise evacuations, but said strong and dangerous currents were possible and people should secure boats and avoid waterfront areas. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center later issued but then cancelled a tsunami watch for Western Australia.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines circling the Pacific Basin.
A massive magnitude-9.1 quake off Indonesia in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries. Most of the deaths were in Aceh province.

Indonesia suspende la alerta por tsunami
Un terremoto de magnitud 7,9 en la escala abierta de Richter sacudió este miércoles el mar al sur de la isla de Sumatra, en el oeste de Indonesia. El país ha lanzado una alerta de Tsunami para el oeste y el norte de Sumatra y Aceh, aunque poco después ha suspendido la alerta. El epicentro del seísmo se encuentra a 10 kilómetros de profundidad y la ciudad importante más próxima es Padang, a 808 kilómetros al noreste, según el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos, que vigila la actividad sísmica en todo el mundo. Por el momento no se ha reportado que el seísmo haya provocado víctimas mortales. Según informa un periodista de AFP, el temblor se ha podido sentir con claridad en Padang y en Sumatra occidental durante varios segundos. Sumatra (Indonesian: Sumatera) is an island in western Indonesia, westernmost of the Sunda Islands. It is the largest island entirely in Indonesia (two larger islands, Borneo and New Guinea, are shared between Indonesia and other countries) and the sixth largest island in the world at 473,481 km2 with a population of 50,365,538. Its biggest city is Medan with a population of 2,109,330.
Sumatra forms an elongated landmass spanned diagonal northwest — southeast axis. The Indian Ocean borders the west, northwest and southwest sides of Sumatra with the island chain of Simeulue, Nias and Mentawai bordering along the southwestern coast. On the northeast side the narrow Strait of Malacca separates the island from Malay Peninsula, an extension of Eurasian continent. On the southeast the narrow Sunda Strait separates Sumatra from Java. The northern tip of Sumatra borders the Andaman islands, while on the lower eastern side are the islands of Bangka and Belitung, Karimata Strait and the Java Sea. The Bukit Barisan mountains, which contain several active volcanoes, forms the backbone of the island, while the northeast sides are outlying lowlands with swamps, mangrove and complex river systems. The equator crosses the island at its center on West Sumatra and Riau provinces. The climate of the island is tropical, hot and humid with lush tropical rain forest originally dominating the landscape.

The U.S. Geological Service said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.8. It was centred under the ocean at a depth of 24 kilometres, it said.
Shallow earthquakes are more likely to cause damage, but the USGS said the quake was located far from land, about 659 kilometres from the town of Muara Siberut.
Indonesian officials warned that the quake might trigger a tsunami.
Marjina, a resident of Sikakap in the Mentawai islands, about 690 kilometres from the epicenter, said the quake was felt only weakly there, but the tsunami warning caused panic among villagers, who ran to higher ground.
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology issued a marine warning for the distant Cocos and Christmas islands. It did not advise evacuations, but said strong and dangerous currents were possible and people should secure boats and avoid waterfront areas. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center later issued but then cancelled a tsunami watch for Western Australia.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines circling the Pacific Basin.
A massive magnitude-9.1 quake off Indonesia in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries. Most of the deaths were in Aceh province.

Un terremoto de magnitud 7,9 en la escala abierta de Richter sacudió este miércoles el mar al sur de la isla de Sumatra, en el oeste de Indonesia. El país ha lanzado una alerta de Tsunami para el oeste y el norte de Sumatra y Aceh, aunque poco después ha suspendido la alerta. El epicentro del seísmo se encuentra a 10 kilómetros de profundidad y la ciudad importante más próxima es Padang, a 808 kilómetros al noreste, según el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos, que vigila la actividad sísmica en todo el mundo. Por el momento no se ha reportado que el seísmo haya provocado víctimas mortales. Según informa un periodista de AFP, el temblor se ha podido sentir con claridad en Padang y en Sumatra occidental durante varios segundos. La alerta activada por el Gobierno ha despertado los viejos fantasmas instalados en la memoria colectiva de los habitantes de Indonesia después de que en 2004 el país fuese arrasado por tsunami provocado por un seísmo de 9,1 grados causando la muerte de 270.000 personas. JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A powerful, shallow earthquake hit off the southwestern coast of Sumatra in Indonesia on Wednesday and could trigger a tsunami, officials said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The U.S. Geological Service said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.8. It was centred under the ocean at a depth of 24 kilometres, it said.
Shallow earthquakes are more likely to cause damage, but the USGS said the quake was located far from land, about 659 kilometres from the town of Muara Siberut.
Indonesian officials warned that the quake might trigger a tsunami.
Marjina, a resident of Sikakap in the Mentawai islands, about 690 kilometres from the epicenter, said the quake was felt only weakly there, but the tsunami warning caused panic among villagers, who ran to higher ground.
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology issued a marine warning for the distant Cocos and Christmas islands. It did not advise evacuations, but said strong and dangerous currents were possible and people should secure boats and avoid waterfront areas. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center later issued but then cancelled a tsunami watch for Western Australia.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines circling the Pacific Basin.
A massive magnitude-9.1 quake off Indonesia in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries. Most of the deaths were in Aceh province.

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A powerful, shallow earthquake hit off the southwestern coast of Sumatra in Indonesia on Wednesday and could trigger a tsunami, officials said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.
The U.S. Geological Service said the earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.8. It was centred under the ocean at a depth of 24 kilometres, it said.
Shallow earthquakes are more likely to cause damage, but the USGS said the quake was located far from land, about 659 kilometres from the town of Muara Siberut.
Indonesian officials warned that the quake might trigger a tsunami.
Marjina, a resident of Sikakap in the Mentawai islands, about 690 kilometres from the epicenter, said the quake was felt only weakly there, but the tsunami warning caused panic among villagers, who ran to higher ground.
Australia's Bureau of Meteorology issued a marine warning for the distant Cocos and Christmas islands. It did not advise evacuations, but said strong and dangerous currents were possible and people should secure boats and avoid waterfront areas. The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Center later issued but then cancelled a tsunami watch for Western Australia.
Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago, is prone to seismic upheaval because of its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines circling the Pacific Basin.
A massive magnitude-9.1 quake off Indonesia in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries. Most of the deaths were in Aceh province.

Pada 9 Maret 2016, sebagian besar Pasifik, meliputi Indonesia, Malaysia, dan negara-negara lainnya di Asia Tenggara dan benua Australia akan dapat menyaksikan gerhana matahari. Gerhana matahari total dianggap sebagai salah satu fenomena alam paling mengesankan yang terjadi di Bumi. Di Timur Samudera Pasifik, gerhana matahari total akan terjadi selama lebih dari 4 menit.
Sebagian besar India dan Nepal akan mengalami gerhana matahari parsial. Sementara itu, Indonesia, Malaysia, Filipina, dan Papua Nugini akan dapat menyaksikan lebih dari 50% gerhana parsial. Sedangkan Kamboja, Myanmar, Vietnam dan Thailand akan melihat sekitar 50% gerhana matahari parsial. Sementara Australia, China, Jepang dan Alaska akan mendapatkan kurang dari 50% gerhana parsial.
Menurut Kepala Lembaga Penerbangan dan Antariksa Nasional (LAPAN), Thomas Djamaluddin, Gerhana matahari total ini pernah terjadi sebelumnya di Indonesia, yaitu pada 1983, 1988, dan 1995. Gerhana matahari total yang akan terjadi pada 9 Maret 2016 diperkirakan baru akan terjadi lagi pada 2023.
Gerhana matahari total ini akan bisa disaksikan dengan jelas di 12 provinsi dari Indonesia bagian barat sampai timur. Untuk wilayah Indonesia bagian barat, waktu puncak terjadinya gerhana adalah pada pukul 07.20 WIB. Untuk Indonesia bagian tengah, puncak gerhana matahari total akan terjadi pada pukul 08.35 WITA. Sedangkan untuk Indonesia bagian timur, puncak gerhana ini akan terlihat pada pukul 09.50 WIT.
Provinsi yang penduduknya bisa melihat gerhana matahari total adalah Sumatera Barat, Sumatera Selatan, Bengkulu, Jambi, Bangka Belitung, dan Kalimantan Barat. Selain itu, wilayah lain, seperti Kalimantan Tengah, Kalimantan Selatan, Kalimantan Timur, Sulawesi Barat, dan Sulawesi Tengah, serta Maluku Utara.

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of western Indonesia, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reports.
There have been no immediate reports of damage.
The USGS said the earthquake struck at 19:49 local time (12:49 GMT). It said the epicentre was 805km (500 miles) south-west of the city of Padang, and 24km deep.
Indonesia's National Meteorological Agency lifted its tsunami warnings several hours after the tremors.
Australian tsunami warnings for Cocos Island, Christmas Island and Western Australia were also lifted.
No tsunami warnings were issued in India or Sri Lanka.
Residents near the city of Padang told the BBC that they felt two earthquakes around two minutes apart.
Jusuf Wiwekananda, a pilot in Padang, told the BBC the earthquake was "very powerful".
"The walls of my hotel room shook and made a loud sound. I have heard there are a lot of people trying to reach higher ground because of the tsunami reports, so some of the roads are jammed."
Telephone communication was reported to be down in the Mentawai island chain, closer to the epicentre.
In 2004, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake triggered the world's deadliest ever tsunami, killing more than 200,000 people.
After that disaster, a more effective tsunami monitoring system was put in place. Warnings are now issued more frequently after earthquakes in the area.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" of plate boundaries, which produces high levels of seismic activity, including frequent earthquakes.
