Versão em Português segue. For any railway enthusiast, Barreiro was an amazing place. Before the rail deck was built on the 25th April Bridge across the Tagus in 1999, all train passengers travelling to the south of Portugal from Lisboa had to cross the river in a ferry to Barreiro on the south bank, and take the train from there. The Moorish-styled station was a bustling hub where back-packers to the Algarve mixed with tourists and regular commuters. It had an atmosphere all of its own. From the platforms, you could see the local beach, the ships arriving from across the river, the locomotive depot. The station approach tracks straddled a wide and extremely busy level crossing, where a never-ending stream of trains and locos seemed to mix freely with cars, buses and pedestrians. The depot was a short walk away, and housed an interesting collection of railcars and locomotives in a traditional half-roundhouse, accessed by a creaking turntable. Adjacent was a locomotive repair works, and on a Friday afternoon, a succession of locos would roll off its traverser and negotiate their way to the shed through the line of locos awaiting their turn in the evening rush-hour. The movement was constant. In addition to venerable Nohab railcars and their trailers dating from 1948, there were Class 1200 locos, built by Sorefame in Portugal to a French design, Class 1320s, built in 1964 by Euskalduna in Spain and brought to Portugal in 1989, Class 1400s, the first ten being built in 1968 by English Electric in the UK and the remainder in Portugal, Class 1500s built by ALCO in the US in 1948, Class1800s built in 1968 by English Electric and based on the UK Class 50, and finally the gigantic, noisy and powerful Class 1930, built to an obvious French design by Sorefame in Portugal in 1981. Coaching stock was also mixed, ranging from elderly 1948 centre-entrance stainless steel vehicles based on the Chicago Zephyr to modern Corail carriages. A variety of trains left Barreiro, including commuter trains to Setúbal, inter-regional trains to the interior, and expresses to the Algarve. Today, all trains now bypass Barreiro on a new line from Pinhal Novo to Pragal and across the 25th April bridge directly into Lisboa, most trains being electric. Ao lado foi um post manutenção locomotiva, e cada tarde da sexta-feira, uma sucessão de locos iria rolar fora de sua traverser e negociar o seu caminho para a roundhouse através da linha das máquinas que aguardam sua vez na hora do ponte. O movimento era constante.
