Take the 5-minute Channel C survey - http://www.wenjuan.com/s/niU77bd/
AngryGirlComics Artist Statement: "The comic is over three years old and it no longer reflects my views and opinions. Three years ago, I did not value the friendship of international Asian students, because I was indeed afraid that I would be seen as "too Asian", stemming from issues of internalized racism that many Asian Americans face growing up in an environment where most of the people they interact with do not share a similar culture with them. Now, of course, I do not hold those views anymore."
======================================================================
Hi all! Thanks for tuning in! We want to introduce to you two new friends, Yulie and Hongyi, who are our guests for this latest episode.
In this episod we invite two Chinese students who grew up here, or commonly known as ABCs. (American "born" Chinese) to share their experience and thoughts on intercultural communication.
Unlike the FOBs ( those who came to the U.S. recently, we call ourselves FOBs and apologize if you find the term offensive), they have perfect spoken English and are U.S. citizens. Nonetheless, they sometimes find that they are questioned and have to justify their belongingness.
These are important conversations we should have. In the second part of the ABC&FOB; episode, we will explore more about the intricacies of racial identity, discrimination, belongingness and intercultural communication.
Alright, enough preaching. We hope you enjoy the episode and please please help us get better by leaving comments, suggestions and questions!

Chinese American history is the history of Chinese Americans or the history of ethnic Chinese in the United States. Chinese immigration to the U.S. consisted of three major waves, with the first beginning in the 19th century. Chinese immigrants in the 19th century worked as laborers, particularly on the transcontinental railroad, such as the Central Pacific Railroad. They also worked as laborers in the mining industry, and suffered racial discrimination at every level of society. While industrial employers were eager to get this new and cheap labor, the ordinary white public was stirred to anger by the presence of this "yellow peril." Despite the provisions for equal treatment of Chinese immigrants in the 1868 Burlingame Treaty, political and labor organizations rallied against the immigration of what they regarded as a degraded race and "cheap Chinese labor." Newspapers condemned the policies of employers, and even church leaders denounced the entrance of these aliens into what was regarded as a land for whites only. So hostile was the opposition that in 1882 the United States Congress eventually passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which prohibited immigration from China for the next ten years. This law was then extended by the Geary Act in 1892. The Chinese Exclusion Act was the only U.S. law ever to prevent immigration and naturalization on the basis of race. These laws not only prevented new immigration but also brought additional suffering as they prevented the reunion of the families of thousands of Chinese men already living in the U.S. (that is, men who had left China without their wives and children); anti-miscegenation laws in many states prohibited Chinese men from marrying white women.
In 1924 the law barred further entries of Chinese; those already in the United States had been ineligible for citizenship since the previous year. Also by 1924, all Asian immigrants (except people from the Philippines, which had been annexed by the United States in 1898) were utterly excluded by law, denied citizenship and naturalization, and prevented from marrying Caucasians or owning land.[3]
Only since the 1940s when the US and China became allies during World War II, did the situation for Chinese Americans begin to improve, as restrictions on entry into the country, naturalization and mixed marriage were being lessened. In 1943, Chinese immigration to the U.S. was once again permitted — by way of the Magnuson Act — thereby repealing 61 years of official racial discrimination against the Chinese. Large-scale Chinese immigration did not occur until 1965 when the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965[4] lifted national origin quotas.[5] After World War II, anti-Asian prejudice began to decrease, and Chinese immigrants, along with other Asians (such as Japanese, Koreans, Indians and Vietnamese), have adapted and advanced. Currently, the Chinese constitute the largest ethnic group of Asian Americans (about 22%), and have confounded earlier expectations that they would form an indigestible mass in American society.[citation needed] For example, many Chinese Americans of American birth may know little or nothing about traditional Chinese culture, just as European Americans and African Americans may know little or nothing about the original cultures of their ancestors.
As of the 2010 United States Census, there are more than 3.3 million Chinese in the United States — about 1% of the total population. The influx continues, where each year ethnic Chinese people from the People's Republic of China, Taiwan and to a lesser extent Southeast Asia move to the US, surpassing Hispanic and Latino immigration by 2012.

This video is intended to serve as a discussion starter for the topic of Chinese and U.S. student interactions on a university campus. The panelists are undergraduate students at Michigan State University and they are sharing their candid thoughts about their experiences. The U.S. students have all spent time in China and have meaningful Chinese friendships. These are not experts in the field of intercultural communication, but we hope you will value their thoughts as a way to start your own conversation about how we can have healthy interactions on campus and the challenges of making friends across cultures. At a time when Chinese students are enrolling in U.S. universities in greater numbers, these conversations present valuable opportunities for us to engage in important dialogs that can enrich us all.
This videos is presented by the Office for International Students and Scholars at Michigan State University.

Take the 5-minute Channel C survey - http://www.wenjuan.com/s/niU77bd/
To my fellow Chinese international students, when is the last time you talk to an American student? Believe me, if you have not interacted with American students outside of class, you are not alone. In fact, Chinese students in general under-communicate with domestic students, in the meantime, many American students feel they are not exposed to international students and their culture either even there are thousands of international students on campus.
SO, what is going on here? In this episode, we interviewed a couple Chinese students and American students, we do not want to generalize anything, but they made a lot of great points on what are the barriers between the conversation.
We realize that it could be difficult to make the first step and conversing with someone that have completely different social/cultural background with you, try to break the ice! Realize that learning could take place anywhere, you don't have to go to East Asia to experience study abroad, be curious, be brave, begin the learning process by starting the conversation!
If you have any experience you want to share with us, please leave that in the comment section, whether it's successful, awkward....anything!
Thank you so much for supporting us! and don't forget to follow us on Facebook! #Channel_C#
Last but not the least, thank those for letting us interview you, can't make this without you!

Peter shares how his experiences in China helped with the success of his company Ironpond that he co-founded with Teddy Zee, working as a certified dispute resolution mediator with Stewart Kwoh and having a famous Chinese writer as a fater.
Editor's Commentary
With the historic "G2" conference in 2010 between President Obama and President Hu Jintao (that includes the first State Dinner with China in 13 years and where he stated will promote "democracy and the rule of law" . . . "improve the lives of the Chinese people") -- it is an acknowledgement that China's status as the 2nd largest world economy, the global diplomacy dominance of China/United States, Hollywood-Chinese entertainment industries' potential abilities to defuse political tensions, China's pending position in surpassing Japan's as the 2nd largest movie market after the U.S., Hollywood's chase for financial resources in China in exchange for creative access and the desire/goal/need for both parties to work together -- could the words "May You Live in Interesting Times" be true?
It is exciting to note that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama state that "America has no better ambassadors to offer than our young people" that underscored the United States' commitment to broadening and strengthening US-China people-to-people exchange particular in the form of educational and cultural connections between our young people through programs such as "100,000 Strong Initiative." (Asia Society)
In our conversation with Peter, two Chinese proverbs seem to apply to his journey.
A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step (一千里的旅程必須從足下) and
A single conversation across a table with a wise man is worth a month's study of books (一個會話隔著餐桌與智者值得一月份的研究報告書).
In conclusion of this interview, it would be appropriate to share his hope as expressed in these words
"So, calling all people of the East and West, North and South,
Reach across that divide and do something spectacular.
Make a friend.
Make a difference.
Make a different world possible for all of us"

The 2010 Royal Gold Medallist, Chinese American I. M. Pei is 92 and preferred to be interviewed instead of giving the customary lecture. So architect David Adjaye, who nominated him, and the RIBAs Head of Awards, Tony Chapman, a former BBC TV producer, went to New York to make a film with him. This 10 minute film is an edited version of the 35 minute film shown instead of the lecture, and of the 13 minute film shown at the Royal Gold Medal Dinner, when Pei was presented with the Medal. It features an interview and examples of his work over five decades.
