Opening:
After nearly a year of backpacking around Asia, we found ourselves rolling into Ulan Bator, the capital city of Mongolia, a country synonymous with Genghis Khan (known as Chinggis Khan in Mongolia) , wide open spaces, and Nomadic life. Of the 3 million people that call Mongolia home, nearly half live in UB, making it the cultural, financial and industrial center of Mongolia, so it’s no surprise that this city is the first stop for most foreign visitors. In our case, we entered the country from China after a 48 hour marathon of bus and train travel that started from Beijing, so as soon as we arrived, the ONLY thing we could think about was to getting to the nearest hostel to sleep. So we did. For 2 days.
Leaving UB:
Once we got our strength up we did some research and found that our hostel was offering a tour of the gobi desert as well as other parts of central Mongolia; a journey that would take 16 days; we’d decided to go with 6 other travelers that we’d met a couple of days beforehand, but with only one day to prepare and zero winter clothes, we desperately needed to gear up...
Market:
“Naran Tuul zach (зах or Khar Zakh)” is a sprawling flea market where you can find wall clocks, linoleum flooring and just about anything else. The market has gained a bad reputation among locals and foreigners alike for being a pickpocket’s haven, so with such a rough exterior and shady nickname like “black market”, we figured we’d be able to bargain our way into some amazing deal, but we soon discovered that this wasn’t the case...
Lunch:
Because Mongolian culture is based on livestock farming, the traditional diet consists of meat, flour and dairy with mutton being the meat of choice. Mongolian winters are extremely harsh so a lot of animal fat is consumed during winter and more dairy products during the summer.
Closing:
What… a… day. It was a long journey, but the scenery was stunning and the Mongolian countryside made quite the first impression on us. But this was only just the beginning and we couldn’t wait to see what the next 15 days would bring...

Earth from Space is presented by Kelsea Brennan-Wessels from the ESA Web-TV virtual studios. In the one hundred thirty-seventh edition we explore the area surrounding Mongolia’s capital city. The Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator is captured in this image from the Landsat-8 satellite. Sitting in the valley of the Tuul River – running northeast to southwest across the image – the city is flanked by the Bogd Khan Mountain to its south (centre of image). This forested mountain is the site of one of the oldest national parks in the world, home to wildlife such as foxes and wolves and endangered species of hare and deer.
South of the mountain, a light covering of clouds blanket the steppe ecoregion. This is part of the greater Eurasian Steppe, stretching from Moldova through Siberia, characterised by grasslands, savannahs and shrublands.
The area pictured is also part of the discontinuous permafrost zone, meaning that in some areas the ground is frozen year round, while other areas thaw for weeks or months at a time.
This poses a challenge for building, so many suburban residents of Ulan Bator live in traditional dwellings that are built on top of the soil. These circular houses – called yurts – are traditionally made from steam-bent wood and covered in layers of fabric for insulation.
This image, also featured on the Earth from Space video programme, was acquired on 19 February 2015 by the Landsat-8 satellite.

Bride kidnapping is a supposedly ancient custom that's made a major comeback since the fall of Communism and now accounts for nearly half of all marriages in some parts. We traveled to the Kyrgyz countryside to follow/aid and abet a young groom named Kubanti as

Story:
The City Administration of Ulaanbaatar is implementing several projects with Google Inc including Google Map, Google Street View, Google Culture Institute, and Google Art Project under the program, “Smart Ulaanbaatar”, which was adopted earlier this year. Officials said the project will open Ulaanbaatar to the world as well as support tourism, and enhance the economic competitiveness of the city.
The opening ceremony of the Google Street View was held at Genghis Khan Square on Wednesday after the two years of cooperation between the city and Google Inc. The project named “UB Street View” covers streets and landmarks of the Ulaanbaatar with 360 degree panorama on Google map.
It enables viewers to travel through city streets, museums, restaurants and buildings using smart phone and computer.
The Google Street View has captured comprising photos taken along 8 million kilometers of roads, covering 60 countries and more than 4,000 cities.
The Google Street View has been offering travel opportunities to major cities such as Washington, DC, New York, London, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Mongolia becomes the 61st country which integrated into Google Street View. Ulaanbaatar is also the first capital, that fully covered by Google Street View in the central Asia.
By linking UB scheme to Google Street View, users from all over the world will be able to search Ulaanbaatar through Google Map.
The city authorities said that the project would give a big contribution to tourism and economy of the nation. Experts also claim that this project would improve the safety of the city by preventing crimes.
Mr Bat-Uul Erdene, Mayor Ulaanbaatar, signed a memorandum of cooperation with a regional head of Google Inc.

In rural Kyrgyzstan men still marry their women the old-fashioned way: by abducting them off the street and forcing them to be their wife. Bride kidnapping is a supposedly ancient custom that's made a major comeback since the fall of Communism and now accounts for nearly half of all marriages in some parts. We traveled to the Kyrgyz countryside to follow/aid and abet a young groom named Kubanti as he surprised his teenage girlfriend Nazgul with the gift of marriage/kidnapping.

If you're like me, you've spent years thinking about it. Worrying about it. Considering its endless implications. Creating Excel spreadsheet scenarios to forecast every imaginable outcome in the event you ever actually worked up the courage to Just-Do-It. And if you're a lot like I was, many years later, you still haven't done it.
But what if you did do it? What if you finally decided to throw in the towel on what's expected of you, instead of what you truly expect from yourself? What if you traded in security for passion? What if, finally, you pursued your dream?
For ten years, I worked on Wall Street in currency sales. It was a job I liked, but didn't love. And like exactly 100% of people working in jobs that they like but don't love, I daydreamed. What if, I always thought, stopping myself at the persistent call of obligations like mortgage, bills, lifestyle.
But then one day I did do it. Suddenly, or so it seemed to everyone but me, I quit my job and landed an internship at a TV station in Mongolia. Moved to Ulaanbaatar for a summer and lived with a family of Mongolian Mormons. And I can hardly believe that I'm telling you this next part because, years on, I can still hardly believe it myself - I was named anchor of the Mongolian national news. And that is what can actually happen if you follow your wildest dream in life.
Of course, I was pretty terrible at what I was trying to do. Just before we went to air that first time, I had a panic attack that can be blamed on a banana. Maybe you don't know this, but bananas are your enemy if you're planning on speaking into a microphone. They turn to paste and stick like glue to your tongue. In fact, try reciting a series of Mongolian names in front of a camera with a mouthful of paste and you'll suddenly understand what I mean. But that aside (oh, and the embarrassing head-bobbing like a buoy on a choppy sea), I can tell you this: there hasn't been a single moment in my life that, for even one second, I have regretted simply trying. I walked away from a lot, and discovered a world I didn't even know was there.

PM Modi Ji Welcome Mongolia, Naadam Festival,Mongolian Horse Riding,Mongolian Wrestling highlights
India will extend a $1-billion credit line to mineral-rich Mongolia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Ulan Bator on Sunday, amid a host of agreements in trade and defence as New Delhi tried to strengthen its influence in China’s backyard.
Modi and Mongolian Prime Minister Chimed Saikhanbileg upgraded ties to a “strategic partnership” – a year after a similar agreement between Mongolia and China – with New Delhi asking the land-locked country to partner in its economic transformation while vowing to step up bilateral trade and investment.
"The two Prime Ministers agreed to encourage development of equal and mutually beneficial trade, investment and economic cooperation, which is balanced, sustainable, and leads to prosperity in both countries," a joint statement said.
The PM and Saikhanbileg, who attended the traditional Mongolian Mini Naadam festival together, also noted intensified cooperation in civil nuclear domain, such as societal and industrial applications of radioisotopes, exploration and mining of radioactive minerals in Mongolia, and human resource development.
Dressed in traditional Mongolian costume, topped with a sola hat, Modi said he hoped his visit – a first by an Indian PM -- would usher in closer economic ties with both leaders agreeing to encourage Indian companies to explore opportunities in Mongolia's mining sector through joint ventures and investment.
The PM, who also shot an arrow from a traditional bow and was gifted a Mongolian horse, is on the second-leg of a three-nation Asian tour.
"Mongolia is also an integral part of India's Act East Policy. The destinies of India and Mongolia are closely linked with the future of Asia Pacific region. We can work together to help advance peace, stability and prosperity in this region." Modi said, calling the central Asian nation the new bright light of democracy in the world.
The PM and Saikhanbileg also watched wrestling, archery and horse riding at the Chingisiin Khuree Camp, 25 km from capital Ulan Bator.
Mongolia's economy -- fuelled by a mining boom that led to high rates of growth, peaking at 17.5 percent in 2011-- depends largely on trade with China. Yet it remains wary of China's economic dominance, which has prompted a rise in protectionist government policies and resource nationalism in the country of three million people.
Mongolia has also sought to strengthen relations with Japan and has maintained trading ties with neighbouring Russia, hosting President Vladimir Putin last year.
Infrastructure development in the central Asian nation has been hit by a slowing Chinese coal market and the Indian loan may primarily be used to fund an unfinished rail link from its coal mines in the Gobi desert to overcome bottlenecks in deliveries.
"India will continue to support Mongolia's endeavour to create a business friendly foreign investment regime," it said.
Officials also signed 14 agreements in areas such as policing and surveillance, air services, cyber security, renewable energy and civil nuclear regimes, with New Delhi gifting Ulan Bator with an indigenous cancer treatment machine.
"It is a special privilege to come on the occasion of two important milestones that unite us – 25 years of democracy in Mongolia and 60 years of diplomatic relations between our two nations. We have strong convergence of views on bilateral relations and our regional and international partnership," Modi said.
He later addressed the State Great Hural, the Mongolian Parliament, which was specially convened today on a holiday for the first time for a foreign leader, before visiting a monastery and posting a trademark selfie with Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj on Twitter

Modern Nomads (1996): Watch how capitalism has helped raise the incomes of Mongolian nomads
A look at how Mongolia's new capitalism has prompted a nomadic revival.
On the grasslands, it's time to brand the wild ponies. Nomadic farmer, Jamts, is marking out his property. In post-communist Mongolia, nomads are once again permitted to own their own livestock. Inside their traditional ger tent, Jamts' wife, Dorj, prepares the day's fresh milk and cream. With skilful management of their resources, Jamts and Dorj have brought up 13 children. But as Mongolia heads for full blown capitalism, nomads now battle with powerful market forces. Jamts has thrived where many have failed because his enterprising nephew, Mendsaikhan, helps him sell produce in the city. Mendsaikhan takes Jamts' adult daughter, Pagma, back home for a visit. Far away from city nightclubs and medical student life, Pagma falls back into the nomadic routine. Haggling at the market, Mendsaikhan gets a good price for his uncle's sheepskins. Traders like he and Jamts can provide Mongolia's stumbling economy with much needed income. But government advisers believe that the nomadic lifestyle will inevitably collide with economic reform.
