From Wikipedia: Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is an international mutual aid fellowship founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith in Akron, Ohio. AA states that its primary purpose is "to stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety". With other early members Wilson and Smith developed AA's Twelve Step program of spiritual and character development. AA's Twelve Traditions introduced in 1946 to help be stable and unified while disengaged from "outside issues" and influences. The Traditions recommend that members and groups remain anonymous in public media, altruistically help other alcoholics, avoiding affiliations with any other organization. The Traditions also recommend that those representing AA steer clear of dogma and coercive hierarchies. Subsequent fellowships such as Narcotics Anonymous have adopted and adapted the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions to their respective primary purposes.
AA has no opinion on the medical nature of alcoholism; nonetheless AA is regarded as a proponent and popularizer of the disease theory of alcoholism. AA is credited with helping many alcoholics achieve and maintain sobriety. The American Psychiatric Association has recommended sustained treatment in conjunction with AA's program, or similar community resources, for chronic alcoholics unresponsive to brief treatment. AA's data show that 36% are still attending AA a year after their first meetings.
The first female member, Florence Rankin, joined AA in March 1937, and the first non-Protestant member, a Roman Catholic, joined in 1939. AA membership has since spread "across diverse cultures holding different beliefs and values", including geopolitical areas resistant to grassroot movements. In the Fourth Edition of Alcoholics Anonymous (November 2001) it states "Since the third edition was published in 1976, worldwide membership of AA has just about doubled, to an estimated two million or more..."
AA's name is derived from its first book, informally called "The Big Book", originally titled Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism.

A surprising and enlightening assessment of AA-its basic tenets and how it works on the spirit-by a nun and recovering alcoholic.
When Sister Molly Monahan joined Alcoholics Anonymous she was looking for the help and support she needed to stop drinking. But what she found was something more, something that surprised her: a deeper spirituality than she had ever experienced in her religious community.
How could a nonreligious group espousing the most basic of spiritual beliefs have anything to teach a nun who had already spent three decades steeped in the values, rituals, and traditions of the contemplative life? The mystery of the effectiveness of AA has yet to be explained. This book looks at that question in new, interesting, and important ways. In Seeds of Grace, Sister Molly Monahan traces her progress through the Twelve Steps and identifies the lessons that Alcoholics Anonymous has to instruct all of us about grace, forgiveness, community, and, in AA parlance, "the God of our understanding." Along the way, through a series of meditations, she shares her insights on why AA works, how it works, and how it has changed her life and the lives of millions of people.

Step 4 Alcoholics Anonymous Explained And Worksheet: Step Four: “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.” https://youtu.be/Yc6k4eQU6w8

Moving forward with Step Four can make one feel uneasy at first – for the powerful words are almost of Biblical proportion – but once begun and examined when complete, taking this step can bring comfort and ease and a new way of thinking and thus become a very good resource for staying sober.
Step Four: “Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.” This requires “vigorous action,” as AA’s Big Book observes.
“Resentment is the ‘number one’ offender,” so one must LIST the people, institutions or principles that anger us. Why did they anger us? The Big Book answers: “In most cases it was found that our self-esteem, our pocketbooks, our ambitions” and relationships “were hurt or threatened.”
For me, the above statement about resentment is simple but profound, for resentment “destroys more alcoholics than anything else." If I ever think that picking up a drink is an option, likely it will be over resentment. Alcoholics can never hang on to resentments. It's very dangerous.
Step Four is a LIST. There is no holding back. Resentment is destructive. Take your time and do the step thoroughly. I have added people to this list weeks and months after completing this step because sometimes we can't think of everyone at one time. That's OK. Recovery is a process, a life-long process. As long as we are taking steps toward righting our wrongs, we are becoming better men and women and are on track to stay sober.
A few comments about this step from the Big Book:
“A life which includes deep resentment leads only to futility and unhappiness.”
“If we were to live, we had to be free of anger.”
“We turned back to the list, for it held the key to the future.”
“We saw that these resentments must be mastered, but how?”
The long answer is to be found in recovery meetings and with sponsors, therapists and sober coaches. But the short answer is that God will help remove the anger. And we have to face our fears, which we listed. We ask God to remove our fear “and direct our attention to what He would have us be.”

Step 1 Alcoholics Anonymous Explained And Worksheet: Step One: “We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable” must be embraced fully before we can move forward. https://youtu.be/xHwtsk2GzeE

When first challenged to admit defeat in the face of alcoholism, most of us revolt. We become stiff-necked, denying perhaps that we have the disease, or believing that willpower alone will help us beat this disease. It took me 27 years and five relapses to understand that alcohol had defeated me, that I was powerless in its grasp. That I suffered from a physical disease and mental obsession that was out of my control, for the physical craving for a drink did not ever abate and my obsession was unbeatable. I exhausted myself over the course of five relapses, until I finally admitted my powerlessness. Only then, could I undertake the 12 Step work – which is painful to begin, but once begun, leads to liberation and the courage to stay sober.
You may recognize some feelings that you have that indicate your life is unmanageable. You may have serious regrets about your behavior when drinking. When you are not drunk, you may understand that you have seriously damaged relationships with those you love. You may experience feelings of depression, self-pity, uselessness; perhaps you don’t trust anyone, including yourself. You may use every possible excuse to drink alcohol: You need it to escape boredom, loneliness, unhappiness. And if you put drinking ahead of everything – including the health of your closest personal relationships, you need help, immediately.
The accompanying worksheet will give you a chance to lay out your feelings and take an inventory of the actions you’ve taken in your life to help you understand the full extent of the damage this disease has wrought. Don’t be surprised if you shudder as you read the questions and hesitate before you begin to answer them, but Step One absolutely requires our admission that our lives have become unmanageable. Only when you have this personal realization and quit drinking can you move on to the remaining eleven Steps – because no one who continues to drink could possibly take them on.

Let’s look more deeply at the wording of this statement.
What is that “Power”?
It is the goal of AA to enable you to find a Power greater than yourself to solve your problem. Do not be disconcerted if, at first, you do not believe God is that higher Power, for many people enter the AA fellowship as doubters or agnostics or atheists. It is absolutely acceptable to honor your own conception of God, or even, to consider the fellowship your higher Power, until God enters your life. It’s important here not to let your own prejudice or feelings against a higher Power keep you from embracing this step, for God will give you the strength and courage to push past your obsession to peace, or remove the obsession and give you strength, day to day, to stay sober.
What is “sanity”?
Your sanity, or ability to think clearly, will come once you have pushed past the obsession. By contrast, insanity, as we are defining it here, is a lack of proportion, an inability to think straight, and an appalling lack of perspective. If you drink to oblivion and exhibit outrageously drunken behavior toward those around you, that is our version of behaving insanely.
I want you to know that living on a spiritual basis does not have to happen overnight: In most cases, spiritual awakening occurs over time. As AA’s Big Book puts it, “With few exceptions, our members find that they have tapped an unsuspected inner resource which they presently identify with their own conception of a Power greater than themselves. Most of us think this awareness of a Power greater than ourselves is the essence of spiritual experience.”
To regain your sanity, therefore, you may embrace this Power as you push past your obsession. Importantly, this is daily work, which can be achieved through prayer or meditation. If you are reading my blogs, you will know that I engage in what I call my Daily Practices during the time I set aside every day to meditate upon what I know I must do to stay sober, and that is: beat the obsession by asking a higher Power, during quiet contemplation, for the strength and courage to do that.
The Big Book continues: “Most emphatically we wish to say that any alcoholic capable of honestly facing his problems in the light of our experience can recover, provided he does not close his mind to all spiritual concepts. . . We find that no one need have difficulty with the spirituality of the program. Willingness, honesty, and open mindedness are the essentials of recovery. But these are indispensable.”
