Voting lines for the Golden Kela Awards, which honour the worst performances of the year, are open till March 30

oing out to watch a movie has become an expensive affair. While releases ever Friday cater to a variety of tastes, film buffs are often left disappointed. It is not unusual to see people walk out of a movie theatre cribbing how the film was a waste of time and money, blaming the promotions for luring them.

The best of Bollywood are honoured every year at glitzy award functions, but the worst are forgotten.

The Golden Kela Awards come in here, allowing movie-goers to express their displeasure and call out the worst performances of the year.

Modelled on the lines of the Golden Raspberry Awards, also called the Razzie awards, that salute the worst Hollywood has to offer, the nominations for Bollywood’s bad performances this year have been announced.

Movie buffs can now cast their vote for the 8th Annual Golden Kela Awards, which will be given out at a ceremony at the India Habitat Centre next month.

Over the years actors, directors and other creative people working to make movies have been taking out time to come and collect the least prestigious awards and even deliver an acceptance speech.

The evening is usually a comic take on the past year by taking a dig at the movies released then.

Abhilash Sen, a movie buff, says: “While taking at the box office is shame enough, movie-goers need to strike back and this is their chance to do so. When one walks out of a good movie we wonder how many nominations it may receive. What the Golden Kela Awards have done is to give a platform to ridicule and call out some bad performances even though the film may have made Rs. 100 crore.”

This year, the nominations have shown that star power alone is not enough to make a good movie. Among the films nominated are Dilwale , Tevar , Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo , Roy , Hero , Bombay Velvet , Singh is Bliing and many, many more. Brother-sister duo Arjun Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor have, in fact, completed a hat-trick this year as nominees for the worst actors.

The various nomination categories include worst actor, worst film, worst director, most annoying song, most atrocious lyrics, most pointless sequel/remake, and ‘why are you still trying’ award. Voting lines are open till March 30.
