This is Dymo’s entry level Label Maker in the consumer market. The Dymo LabelManager 160 is about 8 inches and fits comfortably in the hands. It is a bit on the chunkier side but is still very much something you can carry around and use. The LCD display on top of the unit is pretty clear and very readable. A backlight would have been a helpful addition, but at this price point, its hard to complain. The power and print buttons are colored light blue and have some formatting buttons for Bold, Italics, Underlined and vertical printing in between them. Right under those are the menu button, the navigation keys and the back button. The buttons on the keyboard of the Dymo LabelManager 160 are very clearly laid out and have a nice soft-touch feel to them. The most impressive thing about the layout is how intuitive this LabelManager 160 feels- there’s almost no need for an instruction manual. On the right hand edge you have the cut button which cuts labels to size, once they are done printing. The Dymo LabelManager 160 is powered by 6AAA batteries instead of AA’s for some strange reason. This is a little annoying, considering most people don’t have AAA’s lying around. But it isn’t such a serious issue since you won’t be changing batteries all that often. Its pretty efficient on battery power and even turns itself off after a few seconds, if left unused, to conserve batteries. Alternatively, you can also power the Dymo LabelManager 160 using an optional AC power supply. We don’t really recommend this, as it takes away from the portability of the Dymo LabelManager 160 Label Maker. Nevertheless, its still an option. The D1 label casette loads into the back of the Dymo LabelManager 160 and is available in ¼”, ⅜” and ½” sizes or 6, 9 and 12mm sizes for the metric folks. The starter cassette is 10ft long but regular label cassettes are 23 feet long. The D1 label tapes are also available in a variety of font color, background color and material selections. I’ll leave links to some of the different types of labels in the description below. Dymo also designed this clever little window into the back of the LabelManager 160 that shows you what type of label cassette is currently loaded in the machine- a neat little touch. The print quality on the Dymo LabelManager 160 is also very crisp and clear, as you can see here, and the device printed without jamming or misprinting, throughout our tests. The D1 labels also adhered surprisingly well on most surfaces and even worked well when used to label wires and cables. So our overall thoughts about the Dymo LabelManager 160 handheld label maker. The LabelManager 160 Label Maker is an exceptional product- its very well designed, is extremely easy to use, prints well, is priced right and just works as advertised. Absolutely, a great organizing tool to have around the house. However, if you’re looking for a more commercial, rugged labeler, we’d recommend the RhinoPro Series of Labelers from Dymo.
