The Unknown War
The greatest battles of World War II, the most colossal encounters of military force,
the most devastating human losses which the modern world has ever seen, occurred on Russian soil during
1941-1945, on a battlefield that is unknown to most Americans. The conflict between Hitler's Germany and
Stalin's Russia claimed more than 30 million lives.
On the early morning of June 22, 1941, the Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front
that stretched for 1,800 miles, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union began. The Nazi
high command was extremely confident, expecting the total collapse of Stalin's Russia within six weeks.
In reality, The Unknown War raged on for nearly four years. Before it finished, the Nazis and Soviets fought
the single greatest campaign in military history. The Unknown War covers that period of history beginning in
June 1941, when Germany launched its surprise attack on Russia, through to the end of the war.
The Unknown War was a landmark television series, detailing the drama of the Eastern European front during
World War II. Academy Award Winner Burt Lancaster hosts the 20 part series. Film footage from Soviet archives
comprises a major portion of the series, supplemented by film from both the United States and British archives.
Burt Lancaster spent three weeks in eight cities in Russia, for location filming.
The Unknown War was made as a counter to the deliberate distortions in the Anglo-American series The World At War,
which chose to give as much coverage to the US in Italy as it did to the Red Army at war from the Arctic to the
Black Sea. So blatant was the politically motivated distortion in The World At War that the Soviet authorities
ultimately refused to cooperate in its production. Instead they set out to make a documentary series of their own
that would tell the real story of the War in the East.
The Eastern (Russian) Front of WW2 has been side-lined in the Western media for decades, reduced to just "one aspect"
of the War, if it is even mentioned at all. Certainly there is never any recognition given to the fact that it was the
main, decisive arena of WW2, the scene of a titanic struggle that, at the cost of 30 million Soviet lives, saved the
world from fascism.
Made by the USSR's Central Documentary Film Studios, The Unknown War dealt exhaustively with the war on the Soviet front.
Narrated by Burt Lancaster, who also appeared on camera, the series featured interviews with many participants from numerous
battles, partisan campaigns and SS massacres. It showed the destruction, the sacrifice and the heroism, and also the pride
in their colossal achievement. As Stalin said in one of his communications to Churchill, "Hitler has 25 divisions in
North Africa; I have 250 in the Soviet Union."
Unfortunately, the Western TV networks and distributors who bought The Unknown War for telecast were not prepared to mount
the kind of publicity campaigns needed to overcome 30 years of lies, distortion and simple suppression of the facts about
the Soviet role in WW2.

First-hand accounts of the siege of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), during World War II, which lasted 872 days (8 Sep. 1941 -- 27 Jan. 1944). More than 1.5 million civilians died as a result of incredibly heavy bombing, starvation or extreme cold. The death toll peaked at 150,000 a day, individual daily food consumption was limited to around 125 grams of bread. Amanda shows how Leningrad was simultaneously persecuted by Stalin and Hitler, the 'twin monsters' of the 20th century. Meeting with siege survivors and uncovering diaries and photographs, she reveals the reality of life in Leningrad as it literally starved to death.
Meanwhile, Tom explores the thin line walked by Dmitri Shostakovich as the composer came perilously close to becoming a victim of Stalin's paranoia, and reveals how, as Leningrad starved, his 7th Symphony was performed around the world, uniting audiences against a common enemy before finally returning to the city.
Shot entirely on location in St Petersburg, the story is interwoven with excerpts of the symphony performed specially by the St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maxim Shostakovich, the composer's son.

Shostakovich’s Seventh is the best known art music piece of WWII, considering half of it was composed through the siege of Leningrad. It is a work that reflects not only the factual actions of the conflict, but also many of its philosophical principles, if there were any. Likely, these are the reasons for its everlasting place in history.

The 900-day Siege of Leningrad:
This was undoubtedly the most tragic period in the history of the city, a period full of suffering and heroism.
For everyone who lives in St. Petersburg the Blokada (the Siege) of Leningrad is an important part of the city's heritage and a painful memory for the population's older generations.
Less than two and a half months after the Soviet Union was attacked by Nazi Germany, German troops were already approaching Leningrad.
The Red Army was outflanked and on September 8 1941 the Germans had fully encircled Leningrad and the siege began.
The siege lasted for a total of 900 days, from September 8 1941 until January 27 1944.
The city's almost 3 million civilians (including about 400,000 children) refused to surrender and endured rapidly increasing hardships in the encircled city.
Food and fuel stocks were limited to a mere 1-2 month supply, public transport was not operational and by the winter of 1941-42 there was no heating, no water supply, almost no electricity and very little food.
In January 1942 in the depths of an unusually cold winter, the city's food rations reached an all time low of only 125 grams (about 1/4 of a pound) of bread per person per day. In just two months, January and February of 1942, 200,000 people died in Leningrad of cold and starvation.
Despite these tragic losses and the inhuman conditions the city's war industries still continued to work and the city did not surrender.

The Siege of Leningrad, also known as the Leningrad Blockade (Russian: блокада Ленинграда, transliteration: blokada Leningrada) was a prolonged military operation resulting from the failure of the German Army Group North to capture Leningrad—now known as Saint Petersburg—in the Eastern Front theatre of World War II. The siege started on 8 September 1941, when the last land connection to the city was severed. Although the Soviets managed to open a narrow land corridor to the city on 18 January 1943, lifting of the siege took place on 27 January 1944, 872 days after it began. It was one of the longest and most destructive sieges in history and overwhelmingly the most costly in terms of casualties.
The capture of Leningrad was one of three strategic goals in the German Operation Barbarossa and the main target of Army Group North. The strategy was motivated by Leningrad's political status as the former capital of Russia and the symbolic capital of the Russian Revolution, its military importance as a main base of the Soviet Baltic Fleet and its industrial strength, housing numerous arms factories. By 1939 the city was responsible for 11% of all Soviet industrial output. It has been reported that Adolf Hitler was so confident of capturing Leningrad that he had the invitations to the victory celebrations to be held in the city's Hotel Astoria already printed. The ultimate fate of the city was uncertain in German plans, which ranged from renaming the city to Adolfsburg and making it the capital of the new Ingermanland province of the Reich in Generalplan Ost, to razing it to the ground and giving areas north of the River Neva to the Finns.

The greatest battles of World War II, the most colossal encounters of military force,
the most devastating human losses which the modern world has ever seen, occurred on Russian soil during

On the early morning of June 22, 1941, the Nazi Wehrmacht had amassed 4.2 million crack troops along a front
that stretched for 1,800 miles, and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union began. The Nazi
high command was extremely confident, expecting the total collapse of Stalin's Russia within six weeks.
In reality, The Unknown War raged on for nearly four years. Before it finished, the Nazis and Soviets fought
the single greatest campaign in military history. The Unknown War covers that period of history beginning in
June 1941, when Germany launched its surprise attack on Russia, through to the end of the war.
The Unknown War was a landmark television series, detailing the drama of the Eastern European front during
World War II. Academy Award Winner Burt Lancaster hosts the 20 part series. Film footage from Soviet archives
comprises a major portion of the series, supplemented by film from both the United States and British archives.
Burt Lancaster spent three weeks in eight cities in Russia, for location filming.
The Unknown War was made as a counter to the deliberate distortions in the Anglo-American series The World At War,
which chose to give as much coverage to the US in Italy as it did to the Red Army at war from the Arctic to the
Black Sea. So blatant was the politically motivated distortion in The World At War that the Soviet authorities
ultimately refused to cooperate in its production. Instead they set out to make a documentary series of their own
that would tell the real story of the War in the East.
The Eastern (Russian) Front of WW2 has been side-lined in the Western media for decades, reduced to just "one aspect"
of the War, if it is even mentioned at all. Certainly there is never any recognition given to the fact that it was the
main, decisive arena of WW2, the scene of a titanic struggle that, at the cost of 30 million Soviet lives, saved the
world from fascism.
Made by the USSR's Central Documentary Film Studios, The Unknown War dealt exhaustively with the war on the Soviet front.
Narrated by Burt Lancaster, who also appeared on camera, the series featured interviews with many participants from numerous
battles, partisan campaigns and SS massacres. It showed the destruction, the sacrifice and the heroism, and also the pride
in their colossal achievement. As Stalin said in one of his communications to Churchill, "Hitler has 25 divisions in
North Africa; I have 250 in the Soviet Union."
Unfortunately, the Western TV networks and distributors who bought The Unknown War for telecast were not prepared to mount
the kind of publicity campaigns needed to overcome 30 years of lies, distortion and simple suppression of the facts about
the Soviet role in WW2.

In August 1942, a concert took place in Leningrad that defies belief. A year earlier, the Germans had begun the deadliest siege in history which would kill three quarters of a million civilians. In the midst of the terror, a group of starving musicians assembled to perform Shostakovich's 7th Symphony in what would become a defiant moment in the city's ultimate survival. Historian Amanda Vickery and BBC Radio 3 presenter Tom Service reveal the extraordinary story of triumph of the human spirit over unspeakable terror.
Amanda shows how Leningrad was simultaneously persecuted by Stalin and Hitler, the 'twin monsters' of the 20th century. Meeting with siege survivors and uncovering diaries and photographs, she reveals the reality of life in Leningrad as it literally starved to death.
Meanwhile, Tom explores the thin line walked by Dmitri Shostakovich as the composer came perilously close to becoming a victim of Stalin's paranoia, and reveals how, as Leningrad starved, his 7th Symphony was performed around the world, uniting audiences against a common enemy before finally returning to the city.

This was undoubtedly the most tragic period in the history of the city, a period full of suffering and heroism.
For everyone who lives in St. Petersburg the Blokada (the Siege) of Leningrad is an important part of the city's heritage and a painful memory for the population's older generations.
Less than two and a half months after the Soviet Union was attacked by Nazi Germany, German troops were already approaching Leningrad.
The Red Army was outflanked and on September 8 1941 the Germans had fully encircled Leningrad and the siege began.
The siege lasted for a total of 900 days, from September 8 1941 until January 27 1944.
The city's almost 3 million civilians (including about 400,000 children) refused to surrender and endured rapidly increasing hardships in the encircled city.
Food and fuel stocks were limited to a mere 1-2 month supply, public transport was not operational and by the winter of 1941-42 there was no heating, no water supply, almost no electricity and very little food.
In January 1942 in the depths of an unusually cold winter, the city's food rations reached an all time low of only 125 grams (about 1/4 of a pound) of bread per person per day. In just two months, January and February of 1942, 200,000 people died in Leningrad of cold and starvation.
Despite these tragic losses and the inhuman conditions the city's war industries still continued to work and the city did not surrender.

During the siege nearly 650,000 civilians perished, over 1 million Red Army Soldiers killed in combat defending the city from Nazi Germany. During the siege Nazi Germany sought to isolate the city from the rest of the Soviet Union, and they were largely successful in this effort, although they were never able to take the city. During the brutal siege the citizens of the city of Leningrad were subject to the most inhuman conditions you could imagine. From legendary winters, to Nazi military onslaughts, to complete starvation. Due to the city being encircled by the Nazis the people began to starve, and had to resort to eating wallpaper paste, and even cannibalism. The stories of how the people survived the siege are legendary. A true testament to the human will to survive.

The Siege of Leningrad is one of the most horrific episodes in the city's history, resulting in the death of well over one million Soviets, most of them civilians. For 872 days, the Nazis kept Leningrad under siege, preventing the movement of people, food or armaments. Despite this, Leningrad refused to surrender and the siege was lifted on January 27, 1944.

Petersburg is a cultural capital of Russia and of course there are many places of interest are centered here. All of them are worth visiting. There are museums and palaces, parks and gardens, monuments and sculptures, galleries and theatres. Hermitage is the most famous and well known among all sights of Saint Petersburg. Hermitage is called a treasure of worlds art. It is a huge complex that consists of five buildings combined with passages. In Petersburg, people say if you want to be acquainted with all hermitage collections, the whole life is not enough.. There are many beautiful churches and temples in Saint Petersburg too. The Spilled on the Blood is one of the youngest and most interesting masterpieces of architecture and always attracts tourists attention. The Smolny Ensemble
The Smolny ensemble includes a number of structures put up at different times. This territory on the Neva bank, opposite the Nienschanz Fortress put up by the Swedes in the 17th century, was allotted for the tar-yard (Smolianoi dvor); tar was stored and smelted there for the needs of the Admiralty.
The name of Smolny (tar) was henceforth used for the territory, though the tar-works ceased to exist in the first half of the 18th century.
In the mid-18th century a construction of the Smolny ensemble was started on the site. The oldest are the buildings of the Voskresensky (Resurrection) Novodevichiy Convent, or the Smolny Convent, as it was known among the citizens. The second to be built was the Alexandrovsky Boarding School for Girls for educating girls from middle-class families. To the south of the Smolny Convent the Smolny Boarding School for Young Ladies of Noble Birth was erected in 1806 - 8; it was designed in Russian Empire style by D.Quarenghi.
In 1917 the Smolny Broading School became the revolutionary headquarters. It was here that Lenin resided during the upheaval.
The Cruiser Aurora
The historical ship Aurora has been turned into a museum and is docked just a few hundred yards upstream from the Cabin of Peter the, opposite the "St Petersburg" Hotel. The cruiser, built in St. Petersburg between 1897 and 1900, took an active part in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 and participated in the Tsusima battle, in which most of Russia's Pacific fleet was destroyed. After the war the ship was used for personnel training and during the October revolution of 1917 gave the signal (by firing a blank shot) to storm of the Winter Palace, which was being used as a residence by the democratic, but largely ineffective Provisional Government.
During World War II and the 900 day Siege of Leningrad the guns of the ship were taken down and used on the front line of the city's defenses. After the war the ship was carefully restored and used as a free museum and training ship for cadets from the nearby Nakhimov Navy School.
Church of the Spilled Blood or Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
This church is known to Petersburgers as the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood - or even just the Church on the Blood - as it marks the spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt on March 1, 1881. Designed by Alfred Parland in the style of 16th and 17th-century Russian churches, the Church of the Resurrection provides a stark (some would say jarring) contrast to its surroundings of Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture.
Alexander II died of wounds inflicted in an attack by the terrorist group People's Will. Immediately, his heir, Alexander II, declared his intention to erect a church on the site in his father's memory, and moreover to have this church built in "traditional Russian" style - in distinction to what he saw as the contaminating Western influence of Petersburg.
After the Revolution, the church - despite becoming an official cathedral in 1923 - was looted. It was closed in 1932, and essentially turned into a garbage dump. Rumors abounded that the church would be torn down. Damage from World War II and the Siege of Leningrad can still be seen on the church's walls.
Museum of Russian Political History
State Museum of Russian Political History was founded in 1919 and today houses in the former mansion of Matilda Kshesinskaya, prima-ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre. The Museum stocks are accounted about 500.000 units. For a long time it was a museum of the Great October Socialist Revolution. Today this is the only museum in St. Petersburg, reflecting the state political history at the turning-points of the 19-20th centuries social development. You will be able to spend time with interest and get some new facts about Russian history. The exhibition has documents, photos, letters, old newspapers, death sentences, banners, posters and other memorial from the most politically turbulent times in Russia. Another exhibition is devoted to the life of M. Kshesinskaya with diaries, letters, personal effects and photos. Another exhibition is called "The memorial halls of Lenin". One ticket will allow to see all exhibitions of the Museum

The Smolny Ensemble
The Smolny ensemble includes a number of structures put up at different times. This territory on the Neva bank, opposite the Nienschanz Fortress put up by the Swedes in the 17th century, was allotted for the tar-yard (Smolianoi dvor); tar was stored and smelted there for the needs of the Admiralty.
The name of Smolny (tar) was henceforth used for the territory, though the tar-works ceased to exist in the first half of the 18th century.
In the mid-18th century a construction of the Smolny ensemble was started on the site. The oldest are the buildings of the Voskresensky (Resurrection) Novodevichiy Convent, or the Smolny Convent, as it was known among the citizens. The second to be built was the Alexandrovsky Boarding School for Girls for educating girls from middle-class families. To the south of the Smolny Convent the Smolny Boarding School for Young Ladies of Noble Birth was erected in 1806 - 8; it was designed in Russian Empire style by D.Quarenghi.
In 1917 the Smolny Broading School became the revolutionary headquarters. It was here that Lenin resided during the upheaval.
The Cruiser Aurora
The historical ship Aurora has been turned into a museum and is docked just a few hundred yards upstream from the Cabin of Peter the, opposite the "St Petersburg" Hotel. The cruiser, built in St. Petersburg between 1897 and 1900, took an active part in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 and participated in the Tsusima battle, in which most of Russia's Pacific fleet was destroyed. After the war the ship was used for personnel training and during the October revolution of 1917 gave the signal (by firing a blank shot) to storm of the Winter Palace, which was being used as a residence by the democratic, but largely ineffective Provisional Government.
During World War II and the 900 day Siege of Leningrad the guns of the ship were taken down and used on the front line of the city's defenses. After the war the ship was carefully restored and used as a free museum and training ship for cadets from the nearby Nakhimov Navy School.
Church of the Spilled Blood or Church of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
This church is known to Petersburgers as the Church of the Savior on the Spilled Blood - or even just the Church on the Blood - as it marks the spot where Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt on March 1, 1881. Designed by Alfred Parland in the style of 16th and 17th-century Russian churches, the Church of the Resurrection provides a stark (some would say jarring) contrast to its surroundings of Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture.
Alexander II died of wounds inflicted in an attack by the terrorist group People's Will. Immediately, his heir, Alexander II, declared his intention to erect a church on the site in his father's memory, and moreover to have this church built in "traditional Russian" style - in distinction to what he saw as the contaminating Western influence of Petersburg.
After the Revolution, the church - despite becoming an official cathedral in 1923 - was looted. It was closed in 1932, and essentially turned into a garbage dump. Rumors abounded that the church would be torn down. Damage from World War II and the Siege of Leningrad can still be seen on the church's walls.
Museum of Russian Political History
State Museum of Russian Political History was founded in 1919 and today houses in the former mansion of Matilda Kshesinskaya, prima-ballerina of the Mariinsky Theatre. The Museum stocks are accounted about 500.000 units. For a long time it was a museum of the Great October Socialist Revolution. Today this is the only museum in St. Petersburg, reflecting the state political history at the turning-points of the 19-20th centuries social development. You will be able to spend time with interest and get some new facts about Russian history. The exhibition has documents, photos, letters, old newspapers, death sentences, banners, posters and other memorial from the most politically turbulent times in Russia. Another exhibition is devoted to the life of M. Kshesinskaya with diaries, letters, personal effects and photos. Another exhibition is called "The memorial halls of Lenin". One ticket will allow to see all exhibitions of the Museum
