Los Angeles (i/lɒs ˈændʒəlᵻs/ loss AN-jə-ləs or loss AN-jə-liss) (Spanish for "The Angels"), officially the City of Los Angeles and often known by its initials L.A., is the second-largest city in the United States after New York City, the most populous city in the state of California, and the county seat of Los Angeles County.
Situated in Southern California, Los Angeles is known for its mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, sprawling metropolis, and as a major center of the American entertainment industry. Los Angeles lies in a large coastal basin surrounded on three sides by mountains reaching up to and over 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Historically home to the Chumash and Tongva, Los Angeles was claimed by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for Spain in 1542 along with the rest of what would become Alta California. The city was officially founded on September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 following the Mexican War of Independence. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican–American War, Los Angeles and the rest of California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. The city experienced rapid growth with the discovery of oil.
Kelli Joan Maroney (born December 30, 1965) is an American film and television actress. Maroney is best known for her early roles on the television soap operas Ryan's Hope and One Life to Live and the movies Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Night of the Comet.
Maroney's Daytime TV stints were as Kimberly Harris Beaulac on the soap opera Ryan's Hope (1979-1981, 1982-1983) and Tina Lord on One Life to Live (1984-1985).
Her best known film roles were in the 1982 comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High as Cindy Carr, "Spirit Bunny", the 1984 science fiction movie Night of the Comet as Samantha Belmont; as well as cult films The Zero Boys (1985) as Jamie, and Chopping Mall (1986) as Alison.
Later television credits are Face Down playing a schitzophrenic femme fatale opposite Joe Mantegna, and TV envangelist on HBO's True Blood.
Maroney was featured on the cover of the October 27, 1980 issue of People (alongside fellow soap opera actresses Genie Francis and Kristen Vigard) and interviewed in the related story about the "teen temptresses" of daytime television.
Night of the Comet is a 1984 American disaster-comedy film written and directed by Thom Eberhardt and starring Catherine Mary Stewart, Robert Beltran, and Kelli Maroney.
The film was voted number 10 in Bloody Disgusting's Top 10 Doomsday Horror Films in 2009.
The film is also noted as one of the first mainstream films to carry the PG-13 rating.
The Earth is passing through the tail of a comet, an event which has not occurred in 65 million years, the last time coinciding with the extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. On the night of the comet's passage (which takes place eleven days before Christmas), large crowds gather outside to watch and celebrate.
18-year-old Regina "Reggie" Belmont (Catherine Mary Stewart) works at a movie theater in southern California. She is annoyed to find the initials DMK have the sixth highest score on the theater's arcade game, all the other scores being hers. She stays after the theater closes to play until DMK's score is removed and have sex with her boyfriend Larry, the theater projectionist, in the steel-lined projection booth. Meanwhile, Reggie's 16-year-old sister Samantha "Sam" (Kelli Maroney) argues with their stepmother Doris (Sharon Farrell), who punches her in the face.

Pitched between comedy, horror, and disaster, those reliable Los Angeles genres, Night of the Comet manages, in its thoroughly 1980s sensibility, to be at once the parody and the thing parodied. In it, two Valley-girl sisters who happen to survive the passing of a nearly humanity-extincting comet must contend with zombies, thugs, survivalist scientists, and one another — mostly in the already half-apocalyptic setting of downtown Los Angeles thirty years ago. The video essays of "Los Angeles, the City in Cinema" examine the variety of Los Angeleses revealed in the films set there, both those new and old, mainstream and obscure, respectable and schlocky, appealing and unappealing — just like the city itself.
