Mark Cavendish becomes World champion for Great Britain
Portugal's Rui Costa claimed a stunning victory in the 2013 UCI Road World Championships Elite Mens Road Race - his country's first ever in that category - outpowering Joaquim Rodriguez of Spain in a two rider duel. Alejandro Valverde, also of Spain, then beat Italian Vincenzo Nibali for bronze. Rui Costa played a crafty strategic game in the final lap of the 272 kilometre race, after five riders - Nibali, Valverde, Rodriguez, Colombian Rigoberto Urán and Costa himself - broke away from the front group of around 40 on the final ascent of the Fiesole climb. The quintet, after a constant war of attrition in the previous nine laps of the tough Fireneze circuit which had seen rider after rider abandon, was looking like the race winning move, but it was far from clear which of the five ahead ...

Nineteen teams took the start of the 115km race which followed a 19.8km circuit along the Schuylkill River which the riders had to tackle six times. At the end of each lap stood the Manayunk Wall, an 800m urban climb with sections of over 15% gradient, a perfect spectacle for the huge crowds gathered along the roads. We preview the course and the riders expected to shine over in Richmond, Virginia this year. Click here to subscribe to GCN: http://gcn.eu/SubscribeToGCN Much of the racing will be in the city of Richmond itself, so we've got a technical 16km circuit with a few interesting cobbled climbs in the mix - particularly the short but steep Libby Hill. The likes of Wiggins, Cancellara and Vos may well be absent, but it's clear that all 14 races will be still be packed with stars. It's hard to pick a winner for the Worlds, but the guys have a go anyway. What are your predictions for this year's Road World Championships? Let us know in the comments below. A perfect display of what women racing has to offer The 121km race was off to fast start, although the pace only started picking up at the first ascent of the steep Côte de Ty Marrec. This short yet very steep section would be one of the most exciting feature of the day and the riders would have to tackle it five times.
U23 Men's Road Race Highlights - 2013 UCI Road World Championships Road cycling began as an organised Sport in 1868. The first World Championships were held in 1893 and it has been a part of the Olympics in the whole of the modern era. The courses are of varying distances (approx. 260 km for Elite Men and 140km for Elite Women in the UCI World Championships). Road Races have several different formats. They can be held on a circuit in which riders race over numerous laps like in the UCI Road World Championships; over one-day from one point to another like the Paris to Roubaix Race; or in Stage races in which riders race on consecutive days like the T...
