Biography:
Wonder Girls is a
South Korean girl group, whose current line-up is composed of
Yubin,
Yeeun,
Sunmi and
Hyerim. They are managed by their producer, the singer-songwriter
Park Jin-Young under his talent agency,
JYP Entertainment. They are co-managed in the
United States by
Creative Artists Agency.
The group began their entry into the
American market in 2009 as an opening act for
The Jonas Brothers'
World Tour, performing the
English version of their hit single "
Nobody". In late 2009, "Nobody" charted at number seventy-six on the
Billboard Hot 100 chart, making the Wonder Girls the first South Korean group to enter the chart.
Wonder Girls were popular and prone to bouts of bad luck, to put it mildly. Their first appearance, on a
Korean pop music television show in
February of 2007, was followed by the mini-album
The Wonder Begins (which was released a few days later). Before the Wonder Girls could get rolling on their debut album, however, a series of events occurred that threatened to derail them.
First, Ahn So Hee was injured in an accident during a video shoot, then
Kim Hyun A was pulled from the group by her parents out of concern for her health -- she was later replaced by
Kim Yoo Bin.
Finally, the entire band was injured in a van accident while returning from a gig.
In September of
2007, the group was finally able to release that debut full-length,
The Wonder Years. The lead single, "
Tell Me," was a hit, and the group made appearances in
China and the United States. An EP featuring remixes and new tracks titled The Wonder Years:
Trilogy arrived in 2009, and was followed by a world tour that was documented by the
Internet reality show
Welcome to Wonderland. An English version of the single "Nobody" arrived that same year, along with another tour, this time in
America as the opening act for the
Jonas Brothers. The group members' school and other obligations also meant that 2009 was a year of lineup changes, and by the Wonder Girls'
2010 tour of
America and Canada, the membership included Sun,
Yenny,
Sohee, Yubin and Lim. This lineup released the
Wonder World album in
2011, followed by the
Wonder Party EP in
2012.
In
November 2012 Sunye announced that she will be getting married in
January 2013 (as the first
K-pop idol of the current generation)
JYP announced that the group would be on hiatus.
The Wonder Girls performed for the last time before their hiatus at the
Winter Special Olympics in
Pyeong Chang,
South Korea on
February 5,
2013. Sunye gave birth to a daughter in October. In
December 2013 Sohee left the group, and signed to BH
Entertainment to focus on an acting career. However, there appears to be no desire to completely cut her off from JYP Entertainment and her singing career. Sohee is open to return to promote with the group as agreement between JYP Entertainment and her new agency. Many media outlets in
Korea began to speculate on the group's disbandment. JYP reassured fans and the public that they were not disbanding. They also denied Sunye's retirement from the group and stated that she will still remain as a member regardless of her inactive status. In
December 2014 Sunye officially retired and said that she won't be an entertainer anymore.
Instead she would focus on her family and missionary work in
Haiti with her husband.
On June 24
2015 JYP Entertainment announced that the Wonder Girls would be making a comeback after a two-year break.
A representative of the agency confirmed that former member Sunmi would re-join the group for the first time since withdrawing in 2010. While it was initially stated that member Sunye would remain active and take part in the promotional activities, it was confirmed on July 20, that she and Sohee had officially withdrawn the group, confirming their final group status on the Wonder Girls' official fan cafe.
The Wonder Girls returned as a four-member band rather than a dance group with each member playing an instrument: Yubin (drums), Yeeun (keyboard), Hyerim (guitar), and Sunmi (bass). The group released their third studio album
Reboot on August 3. An
Album was a commercial success, charting number five on
Gaon Albums Chart and number two on
Billboard's US
World Albums. On
August 2, lead single from album "I Feel You" was released.
