UFC 113

UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2 was a mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship on May 8, 2010, at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Background

UFC 113 featured the rematch between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio Rua for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. The two first met at UFC 104, where Lyoto Machida retained his belt in a controversial unanimous decision victory.

For the co-main event, a bout between former Light Heavyweight champions Rashad Evans and Quinton Jackson was initially linked to this event, but was subsequently moved to UFC 114 where the pairing served as the headliner.

Tim Credeur was scheduled to face Tom Lawlor, but was forced from the card with an injury and replaced by Joe Doerksen.

Joey Beltran was set to fight Chad Corvin, however after Corvin's paperwork was not approved by the Quebec Athletic Commission, Beltran ended up fighting Tim Hague.

Nick Catone was forced out of his bout with John Salter due to a back injury. UFC veteran David Loiseau was supposed to step in as his replacement, but Loiseau was denied a license to appear on this card due to alleged ties to organized crime. Salter ended up fighting returning UFC fighter Jason MacDonald. Loiseau would still make his return to the UFC having faced Mario Miranda at UFC 115.

Kimbo Slice

Kevin Ferguson (born February 8, 1974), better known as Kimbo Slice, is a Bahamian-born American boxer, mixed martial artist, and occasional actor. He became famous for mutual combat street fights which were spread across the Internet, leading Rolling Stone to call him "The King of the Web Brawlers".

Slice left the underground fighting scene and signed a professional contract with EliteXC in 2007. Slice competed in The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights, where he lost in his first fight to series winner Roy Nelson. In his UFC debut, Slice defeated Houston Alexander in the The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights finale. As of January 15, 2015, Slice has been under contract to Bellator MMA.

Early life

Ferguson was born in Nassau, Bahamas, but moved to the United States as a child, growing up in Cutler Ridge, Florida. Ferguson was raised with his two brothers by mother Rosemary Clarke. He went to Bel-Air Elementary School, where Ferguson was reportedly involved in his first fight at 13 as he tried to defend a friend. He continued his studies with Cutler Ridge Middle School and later with Richmond Heights Middle School. He attended Miami Palmetto High School, where he was the star middle linebacker. In 1992, his house in Perrine, Florida was destroyed by Hurricane Andrew, forcing him to live in his 1987 Nissan Pathfinder for a month.

Matt Mitrione

Matthew Steven Mitrione (born July 15, 1978) is an American mixed martial artist and former American football player. He played college football at Purdue University and professionally in the National Football League (NFL) with the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings. He was a cast member of Spike TV's The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights.

As of April 27, 2015, he is #12 in official UFC heavyweight rankings.

Paul Daley

Paul Anthony Daley (born 21 February 1983) is an English professional mixed martial artist and kickboxer currently competing in Bellator's Welterweight division. A professional competitor since 2003, Daley has formerly competed for the UFC, Cage Rage, Final Fight Championship, Strikeforce, EliteXC, ShoXC, BAMMA, Cage Warriors, Cage Contender, Shark Fights, Pancrase, and Impact FC. Daley is the former Cage Rage World Welterweight Champion and the former Cage Rage British Welterweight Champion.

Background

Born and raised in England to parents from the Caribbean, Daley began training in karate at the age of eight before later transitioning into Muay Thai. Also a former member of the military in, Daley was a reconnaissance driver for the British army household cavalry. At the age of 18, Daley began training in mixed martial arts.

Daley made his professional debut in 2003 and compiled a record of 2-2 before signing with upstart promotion Cage Rage.

Ultimate Fighting Championship

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a mixed martial arts promotion company. It is the largest in the world and features most of the top-ranked fighters in the sport. Based in the United States, the UFC produces events worldwide that showcase ten weight divisions and abide by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. The UFC has held over 300 events to date. Dana White serves as the president of the UFC while brothers Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta control the UFC's parent company, Zuffa, LLC.

The first Ultimate Fighting Championship event was held on November 12, 1993 at the McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, Colorado. The purpose of the early Ultimate Fighting Championship competitions were to identify the most effective martial art in a fight, with minimal rules, between competitors of different fighting disciplines, including boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Sambo, wrestling, Muay Thai, karate, judo, and other styles. In subsequent competitions, fighters began adopting effective techniques from more than one discipline, which indirectly helped create an entirely separate style of fighting known as present-day mixed martial arts.
