The introduction features various highlights from the previous season accompanied by Heroes by David Bowie.
NHL 99 is an ice hockey video game developed by Electronic Arts Canada. It was released in 1998 and was the successor to NHL 98. The game boasted great improvements to the game from NHL 98. However the next two editions feature small improvements from this game thus making this game similar to NHL 2000 and NHL 2001. It was the first and only installment of the NHL series to be released on Nintendo 64.
Starting with NHL 99 up to NHL 2001 there were very few large 'improvements' to the game, though some would call them regressions. NHL 99 for the PlayStation boasted higher-resolution graphics than NHL 98, but the framerate and unresponsive controls (especially in 2+ player modes) hindered its playability. A career mode (later developed into a Franchise mode) with a retirement feature, drafting, and player trades were added to the game. Furthermore, created players can use any photo for their face which is textured onto the head. Online leagues of the game also became more organized. Daryl Reaugh left the series as color commentator following NHL 99. Jim Hughson remained as play-by-play announcer in the game. In the Nintendo 64 version of NHL 99, based on the console version of NHL 98 (old-style goalie crease and all), Bill Clement is the only one providing commentary.

May 4th 1999, lmao May the fourth. WCQF game7. the 5th seeded St.Louis vs the 4th seeded Phoenix.
It was a very close game, shots were even at 35, Grant Fuhr would record the shutout. Chris Pronger's St.louis Blues would defeat Jeremy Roenick and the Phoenix Coyotes in a tight game 7 in the America West Arena. The blues would move on to the WCSF and lose in 6 games to the eventual Stanley Cup Champions, the Dallas Stars.
Pierre Turgeon would get a deflection goal from a shot by Richard Persson with 2:01 left in the first OT period to upset the coyotes.
That would be Grant Fuhr's last season with the St.louis Blues as he would he would go to the Calgary Flames for his last season in the NHL. 3 years later Grant Fuhr gets inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Assist: Richard Persson, Scott Young

ARLINGTON, Va. The Washington Capitals have hired Arturs Irbe as the organizations goaltending coach, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. Irbe replaces Dave Prior, who recently resigned after 12 years with the club to spend more time with his family.
Irbe, 42, is a native of Riga, Latvia, and served as the goaltending coach for his hometown Dinamo Riga last season in the Kontinental Hockey League. He has also worked with the Latvian national team, which he represented in the 2002 and 2006 Olympics. Irbe is also a former teammate of Capitals assistant coach Dean Evason, as both players were with the San Jose Sharks from 1991-93.
Irbe is a 13-year NHL veteran and played for San Jose, Dallas, Vancouver and Carolina. He played in 568 games and compiled a career record of 218-236-79 while appearing in two NHL All-Star Games (1994, 1999). His last NHL season was 2003-04, and he finished his NHL career with a 2.83 goals-against average and an .899 save percentage. Irbe played professionally in Europe after he left the NHL and retired completely after appearing in six games with Slovakias HK Nitra in 2006-07.
Irbe is fluent in English, Latvian, Russian and also speaks some German. He was selected in the 10th round, 196th overall, in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft by the Minnesota North Stars. He spent five years in the San Jose organization and made his NHL debut in the 1991-92 season when he appeared in 13 games. Irbe played in 74 games for the Sharks during 1993-94 and set an NHL record (since broken) by playing 4,412 minutes in the regular season. He spent the 1996-97 season with Dallas and the 1997-98 season with Vancouver before joining Carolina for the final six years of his career.
Irbe became a fixture in the Carolina net and played more than 50 games in each of his first four seasons with the Hurricanes. He registered career-best marks in GAA (2.22) and in save percentage (.923) during the 1998-99 season, his first with Carolina. He played a career high 77 games during the 2000-01 season and a year later he helped lead Carolina to the Stanley Cup final.

NHL 2000 is an ice hockey video game developed by Electronic Arts Canada. It was released on August 31, 1999 and was the successor to NHL 99. The game did not boast great improvements to the game from NHL 99, nor did NHL 2001 feature any idea the two previous versions didn't until NHL 2002.
The tagline of this game was, "Only the physical will survive." The main cover man was Chris Pronger then of the St. Louis Blues. The cover man for versions sold in Europe was Markus Naslund of the Vancouver Canucks.
A season mode (later developed into a Franchise mode) with a retirement feature, drafting, and player trades were added to the series in NHL 99, and similar gameplay was used in this version, as well. NHL 2000 kept features from NHL 99; for example, created players can use any photo for their face, which is textured onto the head.
Another mode in NHL 2000 is the Tournament mode, in which the user chooses 16 countries (only 18 countries were available in the game) to play a round robin. After the round robin, eight teams are eliminated and then the remaining eight have a "playoff," but instead of it being out of seven games it was single-elimination. Eventually, a winner is crowned gold in the championship match. There is also a third place match for the losers of the semi-finals.
The game has a total of 28 NHL teams, including the new expansion Atlanta Thrashers, which was the only team in the game that didn't exist in the 1998-99 season. Online leagues of the game also became more organized.
Daryl Reaugh left the series as color commentator in this game and was replaced by Bill Clement. Jim Hughson remained as play-by-play announcer throughout the series.

Documentary on the greatest NHL hockey player of all time: Wayne Gretzky: the Life and Times.
Wayne Douglas Gretzky, CC (born January 26, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and former head coach. He played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for four teams from 1979 to 1999. Nicknamed "The Great One", he has been called "the greatest hockey player ever" by many sportswriters, players, and the NHL itself. He is the leading point-scorer in NHL history, with more assists than any other player has points, and is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season -- a feat he accomplished four times. In addition, he tallied over 100 points in 16 professional seasons, 14 of them consecutive. At the time of his retirement in 1999, he held 40 regular-season records, 15 playoff records, and six All-Star records. He won the Lady Byng Trophy for sportsmanship and performance five times, and he often spoke out against fighting in hockey.
Born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, Gretzky honed his skills at a backyard rink and regularly played minor hockey at a level far above his peers. Despite his unimpressive stature, strength and speed, Gretzky's intelligence and reading of the game were unrivaled. He was adept at dodging checks from opposing players, and he could consistently anticipate where the puck was going to be and execute the right move at the right time. Gretzky also became known for setting up behind his opponent's net, an area that was nicknamed "Gretzky's office" because of his adept skills in that area.
In 1978, he signed with the Indianapolis Racers of the World Hockey Association (WHA), where he briefly played before being traded to the Edmonton Oilers. When the WHA folded, the Oilers joined the NHL, where he established many scoring records and led his team to four Stanley Cup championships. His trade to the Los Angeles Kings on August 9, 1988, had an immediate impact on the team's performance, eventually leading them to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, and he is credited with popularizing hockey in California. Gretzky played briefly for the St. Louis Blues before finishing his career with the New York Rangers. Gretzky captured nine Hart Trophies as the most valuable player, ten Art Ross Trophies for most points in a season, five Lady Byng Trophies, five Lester B. Pearson Awards, and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP.
After his retirement in 1999, he was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, making him the most recent player to have the waiting period waived. The NHL retired his jersey number 99 league-wide, making him the only player to receive this honour. He was one of six players voted to the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) Centennial All-Star Team. Gretzky became executive director for the Canadian national men's hockey team during the 2002 Winter Olympics, in which the team won a gold medal. In 2000, he became part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes, and following the 2004--05 NHL lockout he became the team's head coach. In September 2009, following the franchise's bankruptcy, Gretzky resigned as coach and relinquished his ownership share.

The Dallas Stars. The Stanley Cup.
In the 1998-99 season, truly nothing else did matter. And with Mike Modano, Ed Belfour, Joe Niewendyk and Brett Hull providing the heroics, the Stars realized the one goal they had set for themselves at the start of the season -- winning a Stanley Cup championship.
"Nothing Else Matters" chronicles the first time in franchise history -- from the team's move to Dallas in 1993 to Brett Hull's dramatic triple overtime goal in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. NHL® Productions takes you behind the scenes with exclusive interviews and never before seen footage from the start of the playoffs to the Stars' wild championship Stanley Cup celebration.
It was a season like no other in Dallas. Relive the drama, the passion and the glory as the Stars finally bring the Stanley Cup to Texas in "Nothing Else Matters".

Pavel Bure has his #10 retired by the Vancouver Canucks in a special pre-game ceremony ahead of a match-up against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The ceremony was hosted by Jim Hughson of Hockey Night in Canada.
Bure was a member of the Canucks from 1991.92 to 1997.98, playing his first NHL game on November 5, 1991 against Winnipeg. While with the organization, Bure tallied 478 points (254-224-478) in 428 games played. He continues to hold the franchise record for most points scored by a rookie with 60 (34-26-60) in 65 games played in 1991.92 as well as for most career shorthanded goals (24). The Moscow, Russia native also ranks top five all-time in game-winning goals (32), goals (254) and hat tricks (9). Bure shares the franchise lead in playoff goals alongside Trevor Linden, registering 34 in 60 playoff games with Vancouver. In 1994, his 16 playoff goals set a franchise record for most playoff goals in a post season and helped Vancouver to within one win of a Stanley Cup Championship.

Hockey rough stuff - Various (NHL, EHL 97, SM-liiga - late 1990s)

* Mats Sundin (Tor) repimässä Jari Kurria (Ana) rinnuksista.
* 1997-1998 European Hockey Leaguen (surullisen)kuuluisa peli TPS - Manchester Storm, jossa Stormin Jeff Lindsay moukaroi Tepsin "junnua" Tomi Kalliota. Samassa tilanteessa myös Kimmo Timonen saa höykkyä. Ei kovin reilun näköistä menoa.
* SM-liiga väläyksiä, mm. Tom Laaksonen vs Riku Kallioniemi.
Jossain vaiheessa myös pätkää jossa itse 99 hermostuu NHL-matsissa. Toisen kaverin ilme kertoo enemmän kuin tuhat sanaa.
