The UN's Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion has visited Bangladesh to look into the recent murders of four writers who had been labelled atheists by conservative religious groups.
But atheists are not the only minority group in Bangladesh facing problems.
In Tangail, a 120-year-old Hindu temple was burned down at this site. Worshippers now keep a close watch on the new one.
In 1971, 21 percent of the population was Hindu; now it is only nine percent. "These kinds of attacks are a way to drive us out of the country," one Hindu resident told Al Jazeera.
Human rights activists have criticised the country's police for what they say is their slow handling of the murder investigations.

In her now-infamous speech to the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor declared, "Whether born from experience or inherent physiological or cultural differences ... our gender and national origins may and will make a difference in our judging." Sotomayors statement reinvigorated a national discussion regarding the issue of minority representation in American politics. Our speakers shine a light on this topic in addressing the question: when, to what extent and why could members of a minority group or identity better represent that groups interests than non-members?

Jim Sleeper is a writer and teacher on American civic culture and politics and a lecturer in political science at Yale. He is the author of The Closest of Strangers: Liberalism and the Politics of Race in New York and Liberal Racism.

This video provides an overview of the meetings of the Ethnic Mnority focus group in Birmingham. The members of the group were given introductory talks on the Roman Empire and designed their final projects at the Handsworth Community Fire Station on Friday 12th and 26th September and Thursday 2nd October. The group also visited the Birmingham Museum and Arts Gallery on Saturday 20th September.
These meetings were part of a funded project called 'Understanding Museums: Deaf, Visually Impaired and Ethnic Minority groups'. There were two aims of the project:
1) To act as an outreach programme to provide individuals in the participating groups with an introduction to the Roman Empire.
2) To look at how museums can be made more accessible to Deaf, visually impaired and ethnic minority groups.
The project was generously funded by the CAGR programme (AHRC funded), ACE and CA.

A minority is a sociological category within a demographic. Rather than a relational "social group", as the term would indicate, the term refers to a category that is differentiated and defined by the social majority, that is, those who hold the majority of positions of social power in a society. The differentiation can be based on one or more observable human characteristics, including, for example, ethnicity, race, gender, wealth or sexual orientation. Usage of the term is applied to various situations and civilizations within history, despite its popular mis-association with a numerical, statistical minority. In the social sciences, the term "minority" is used to refer to categories of persons who hold few positions of social power.
The term "minority group" often occurs alongside a discourse of civil rights and collective rights which gained prominence in the 20th century. Members of minority groups are prone to different treatment in the countries and societies in which they live. This discrimination may be directly based on an individual's perceived membership of a minority group, without consideration of that individual's personal achievement. It may also occur indirectly, due to social structures that are not equally accessible to all. Activists campaigning on a range of issues may use the language of minority rights, including student rights, consumer rights and animal rights.

Vietnamese Minority Groups Join in Coalition (Cambodia news in Khmer)
US representatives of three main minority groups in Vietnam have officially joined in a coalition to demand better treatment from Vietnamese authorities, including freedom of religion. The groups have joined together to "demand freedoms," said Thach Ngoc Thach, who heads an advocacy group for the Khmer minority in Vietnam, known commonly as the Khmer Kampuchea Krom. Muslims in UK facing worst job discrimination of any minority group
According to the research, Muslim men are 76 percent less likely to have a job of any kind compared to white Christians of the same age and with the same qualifications. And Muslim women are 65 percent less likely to be employed than white Christian counterparts. The survey has found that religion is now causing more prejudice than skin color. The only religious group with better work prospects than white British Christians are British Jews. Experts say the situation seemingly stems from growing Islamophobia and hostility towards Muslims in the UK. The UN's Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion has visited Bangladesh to look into the recent murders of four writers who had been labelled atheists by conservative religious groups.
But atheists are not the only minority group in Bangladesh facing problems.
In Tangail, a 120-year-old Hindu temple was burned down at this site. Worshippers now keep a close watch on the new one.
In 1971, 21 percent of the population was Hindu; now it is only nine percent. "These kinds of attacks are a way to drive us out of the country," one Hindu resident told Al Jazeera.
Human rights activists have criticised the country's police for what they say is their slow handling of the murder investigations.

The members of the group were given introductory talks on the Roman Empire and designed their final projects at the Handsworth Community Fire Station on Friday 12th and 26th September and Thursday 2nd October. The group also visited the Birmingham Museum and Arts Gallery on Saturday 20th September.
These meetings were part of a funded project called 'Understanding Museums: Deaf, Visually Impaired and Ethnic Minority groups'. There were two aims of the project:
1) To act as an outreach programme to provide individuals in the participating groups with an introduction to the Roman Empire.
2) To look at how museums can be made more accessible to Deaf, visually impaired and ethnic minority groups.
The project was generously funded by the CAGR programme (AHRC funded), ACE and CA.

As demographics on college campus becomes more diverse, teaching diversity and respect may allow for more acceptance and less violence. An array of literature describes the importance of multicultural education but authors rarely highlight the effectiveness of multicultural pedagogy in creating positive images of minority group members. With this idea considered, this study examines what students have learned in college courses about race and ethnicity and whether or not this knowledge has influenced personal feelings about people of different races and ethnicities. Contrasting multicultural education are misrepresentations of minority group members presented in the media that reinforce negative stereotypes. This presentation also explores whether media images about different cultures and experiences changes student’s attitudes about racism, ethnicity, and privilege. College students completed a multiculturalism study in dorms, the library, during student union meetings, and in classes at one Liberal Arts University. The survey assessed college-level and media influences, and perceptions of student expectations of minority group members. Findings and correlations from the survey data are presented to explain expectations for and awareness of difference races and ethnicities on campus and in society.

The Flower Lolo are an elaborately decorated ethnic minority people of Meo Vac, Vietnam. Their kaleidoscope costume is meticulously embellished with approximately 4000 hand appliquéd triangles resembling tetris block formations. Five triangles can take up to two hours to sew, I know because in August 2015 I motorbiked from Hanoi to Meo Vac to learn for myself. Constructing a single costume takes about one year to complete, outfits are sewn by mothers for their daughters, only worn on best occasions and stored in a lockable chest. For that reason the Flower Lolo‘s dress is publically revered as one of Vietnam’s finest sartorial accomplishments.

"I always felt as the Odd One Out":The role of Minority Group Status in family formation and childbearing among highly educated Roma and Non-Roma women in Hungary -- a comparative study

To test the minority Group Status hypothesis I carried out a qualitative research, based on in- depth life history interviews among 45 Roma women with university degrees, and their partners/husbands if they were cohabiting. As a basis for comparison as to the the role of minority group identification in fertility behaviour, I could also benefit from the experience of a comparative, qualitative demographic research which was carried out among 40, Non- Roma medium and highly educated women and their partners in Hungary (and in 4 other post-socialist countries, see Repro Project [REPRO WP5], led by the Max Plank Institute for Demographic Research). One of mine main findings is that minority status does have an effect on reproductive strategies- but it works through the interplay of many intermediate factors. Among others the difficulty for the highly educated women to find the right partner whom they want to form a family; the incompatibility between their perception of their gender roles and their partner.s expectation regarding these roles; and the relatively long period of self-establishment, self-expression or self-fulfilment of the studied women in a society where being Roma is a strongly stigmatised identity. All these factors point to the same direction: delaying the first birth.
