Plot: In the 18th century, the only way to navigate accurately at sea was to follow a coastline all the way, which would not get you from Europe to the West Indies or the Americas. Observing the sun or stars would give you the latitude, but not the longitude unless done in conjunction with a clock that would keep time accurately at sea, and no such clock existed. After one too many maritime disasters due to navigational errors, the British Parliament set up a substantial prize for a way to find the longitude at sea. The film's main story is that of craftsman John Harrison: he built a clock that would do the job, what we would now call a marine chronometer. But the Board of Longitude was biased against this approach and claiming the prize was no simple matter. Told in parallel is the 20th century story of Rupert Gould, for whom the restoration of Harrison's clocks to working order became first a hobby, then an obsession that threatened to wreck his life.

Quotes:
George Graham: One second a month, sir! You're either a liar or a fool. --Who're your makers?::John Harrison: Myself, and my brother James.::George Graham: Really? Who were you apprenticed to?::John Harrison: My father, as was he. I am a carpenter by profession.::George Graham: A carpenter?!::John Harrison: My timekeepers are made of wood. I've brought some drawings with me.::George Graham: I'm sorry, I mistook you. This is a joke, sir, am I right? Mr. Halley seeks to derive some pleasure from this contrivance? Is he here, perhaps, hiding in a corner to watch my performance?::John Harrison: It is I who am sorry, sir! The fault is mine. It was my impression I was here to see a clockmaker; I find myself in a toy shop by mistake! William!::[turns to leave]
George Graham: Mr. Harrison! Summer and winter... how is it done? How is it done, the compensation?::John Harrison: I use a pendulum of different metals that work against each other.::George Graham: Impossible. Doesn't work. I've tried it.::John Harrison: It is possible. It does work. I've built it.
Rupert Gould: Sir Frank, I'm not asking to mechanically alter the Harrison machines; I just want to bring them back to their proper condition. If they're left as they are much longer, I fear they may become unrecoverable. I know my qualifications appear unlikely; I can only plead that they're no more so than Harrison's own.
Muriel Gould: I want you to give up the clock.::Rupert Gould: I will... when it's finished.::Muriel Gould: Yes, I knew you'd say that. Silly of me, really.
John Harrison: I'm afraid you must excuse me, but I should go back on deck. The air in here is...::John Campbell: Poisonous? You'll get used to it. Most people don't notice it after the first couple of years.
Minister for the Navy: [to Parliament] Honorable Members who mourn with us the recent tragic loss off the Scilly Isles of four of Her Majesty's ships, and 2,000 wretched souls therein, under the command of Admiral Sir Cloudisley Shovell, will be pleased to know that Her Majesty's government is to offer a reward -- a prize of twenty thousand pounds -- to any man offering a practicable and useful solution to the problem of finding longitude at sea. A Board of Longitude will be set up, whose sole business will be to investigate any serious suggestions, and finally, it is profoundly to be hoped, to award this prize.
John Harrison: It's not just beautiful, it's divine: that's where the beauty lies, you see. Each note on the scale is calculated by mathematical formula, based on the circumference of a circle, you see.::Sir Charles Pelham: Uh, almost...::John Harrison: The step between each note is composed of larger and lesser intervals, each derived from pi. It is divine because for the first time we are listening to music as the Lord intended.
Sir Charles Pelham: How can you tell if a clock is running 5 seconds faster, or slower?::John Harrison: My own pendulum clock is adjusted to one second a month.::Sir Charles Pelham: O-ho-ho, no clock can be that accurate.::John Harrison: Mine can.
John Harrison: Impossible, sir. Clock needs a pendulum. Can't take a pendulum to sea.::Sir Charles Pelham: Not like you to say "impossible," John.::John Harrison: No, sir.
Elizabeth Harrison: You've found a way to build this sea-clock, haven't you?::John Harrison: With God's help it might be possible. --I mean, why did He encourage me to build a perfect timepiece in the first place? So the blacksmith might start work 5 seconds earlier or later? Or was it to give us the ability to explore His creation in safety, to move without fear in the space He's given us to inhabit?

Other landmarks of the American Revolution shown include the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere's midnight ride and Patrick Henry's (played by Frank McGlyyn Jr. and not played by his father Frank McGlynn Sr) inflammatory speeches to the VIrginia House of Burgesses. In this presentation of The Right Mind, Wes Siler discusses the origin of conservatism and traces it back to the 18th century statesman and political philosopher Edmund Burke. Wes argues that the moral distinction between the American and French Revolutions is one of the most important aspects of Burke's thought and that history vindicates his consideration of both events. Wes concludes that Burke should be viewed not as an outdated philosopher of bygone days, but as a source of wisdom and intellectual sophistication from which contemporary conservatives may draw strength to face their current challenges.

Moral Foundations of Politics (PLSC 118)
Edmund Burke was an English politician who wrote his Reflections on the Revolution in France to express his disdain for the destructive havoc wrought by the French Revolution. As a traditionalist-conservative, he thinks about social change in a cautious and incremental way and characterizes the social contract as binding on those who are living, those who are dead, and those who are yet to be born. Studying the anti-Enlightenment differs from the study of the Enlightenment because traditional conservatives of the Burkean school reject the idea of formulating a theory upon which to base society. Their views can be more accurately characterized as attitudes or dispositions. Social change is possible, but it must reflect the thinking of "the man on the Clapham omnibus." Thinkers like Burke and Devlin place individuals as subordinate to society and its traditions. Therefore, the anti-Enlightenment is a rejection of both of the central tenets of the Enlightenment that have been covered in the course until now--the commitment to individual rights, and to science and reason.

Edmund Burke Privy Council of the United Kingdom (12 January [NS] 1729[1]-- 9 July 1797) was an Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist and philosopher who, after moving to England, served for many years in the House of Commons of Great Britain as a member of the Whig party.
He is mainly remembered for his support of the cause of the American Revolutionaries, and for his later opposition to the French Revolution. The latter led to his becoming the leading figure within the conservative faction of the Whig party, which he dubbed the "Old Whigs", in opposition to the pro--French Revolution "New Whigs", led by Charles James Fox.
Burke was praised by both conservatives and liberals in the 19th century.[5] Since the 20th century, he has generally been viewed as the philosophical founder of modern conservatism,as well as a representative of classical liberalism.
On 19 April 1774 Burke made a speech (published in January 1775) on a motion to repeal the tea duty:
Again and again, revert to your old principles—seek peace and ensue it; leave America, if she has taxable matter in her, to tax herself. I am not here going into the distinctions of rights, nor attempting to mark their boundaries. I do not enter into these metaphysical distinctions; I hate the very sound of them. Leave the Americans as they anciently stood, and these distinctions, born of our unhappy contest, will die along with it.... Be content to bind America by laws of trade; you have always done it.... Do not burthen them with taxes....
But if intemperately, unwisely, fatally, you sophisticate and poison the very source of government by urging subtle deductions, and consequences odious to those you govern, from the unlimited and illimitable nature of supreme sovereignty, you will teach them by these means to call that sovereignty itself in question....
If that sovereignty and their freedom cannot be reconciled, which will they take? They will cast your sovereignty in your face. No body of men will be argued into slavery. Sir, let the gentlemen on the other side...
tell me, what one character of liberty the Americans have, and what one brand of slavery they are free from, if they are bound in their property and industry by all the restraints you can imagine on commerce, and at the same time are made pack-horses of every tax you choose to impose, without the least share in granting them. When they bear the burthens of unlimited monopoly, will you bring them to bear the burthens of unlimited revenue too? The Englishman in America will feel that this is slavery; that it is legal slavery, will be no compensation either to his feelings or to his understandings.

In this segment of my series on Women and the French Revolution, I discuss Mary Wollstonecraft's role as a VINDICATOR for women during the French Revolution. In 1790, Edmund Burke, a notable member of Parliament, published a scathing rebuke of the French Revolution, its aims, and its principles. At a time when it wasn't appropriate for a woman to engage in public debate, Mary Wollstonecraft responded to Burke with her Vindication of the Rights of Man. After finishing at this work, Wollstonecraft began writing A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, the work for which she is best known. Wollstonecraft's willingness to step into the arena and engage the public in debates about liberalism and feminism.

A Philosophical Enquiry
Edmund BURKE (1729 - 1797)
Burke's A Philosophical Enquiry is an important treatise in the history of philosophical aesthetics, putting forth a theory of two concepts of central, perennial importance to the field of aesthetics, namely, the beautiful and the sublime. Written before Burke turned 19, it is his only purely philosophical work. Despite being such an early work, Burke's Philosophical Enquiry was noted by such later philosophers as Diderot and Kant and has remained influential in the field of aesthetics since its publication in 1757. About the speaker
Frank Furedi is Emeritus professor of Sociology, University of Kent and Visiting Professor, Institute of Risk and Disaster Reduction, University College London.
During the past 15 years Furedi’s studies have been devoted to an exploration of the cultural developments that influence the construction of contemporary risk consciousness. During the past decade his research has been oriented towards the way that risk and uncertainty is managed by contemporary culture. He has published widely about controversies relating to issues such as health, parenting children, food and new technology. His Invitation to Terror; Expanding the Empire of the Unknown (2007) explores the way in which the threat of terrorism has become amplified through the ascendancy of possibilistic thinking. It develops the arguments contained in two previous books The Culture of Fear (2003) and Paranoid Parenting (2001). Both of these works investigate the interaction between risk consciousness and perceptions of fear, trust relations and social capital in contemporary society. His work on trust has been developed through a historical investigation of the meaning of authority, which was published by Cambridge University Press in October 2013 as Authority, A Sociological History. His latest book; First World War: Still No End in Sight was published earlier this year.
Furedi’s books and articles provide an authoritative yet lively account of key developments in contemporary cultural life. Using his insight as a professional sociologist, Furedi has produced a series of agenda-setting books that have been widely discussed in the media. Furedi regularly comments on radio and television. In the past year he has appeared on Newsnight, Sky and BBC News, The Today Programme, Moral Maze and a variety of other radio television shows. His has been interviewed by the media in Australia, Canada, the United States, Poland, Holland, Belgium, Brazil, and Germany and other countries.

We are delighted to welcome our alumnus Jesse Norman MP back to Policy Exchange for a panel discussion on his biography of Edmund Burke, philosopher, statesman and founder of modern conservatism.
Edmund Burke is arguably the finest, yet most under-rated, political thinker of the past three hundred years. In his new book - the first popular biography of Edmund Burke for over a decade - Norman portrays the great Irishman anew, vividly depicting his dazzling intellect, imagination and empathy, and explaining his lasting influence over politics today.

Adam Smith and Edmund Burke are the most significant figures of the founding in the conservative movement of America. Their similarities and differences in the early 19th century formed the basis for the traditional moral values group and the libertarian group comprised in the conservative movement. These two sides of the conservative movement have lasted to this day, with the addition of the economics group of conservatives brought about by the new development of the Tea Party group. Modern leaders of the conservative movement, like Glenn Beck, and Ron Paul, are driving forces of the established conservative movement that goes all the way back to Smith's and Burke's day of American history.
In this video, Gary DeMar interviews Dr. North (in six parts) about his brand new DVD series "The History of the Conservative Movement" (available now at AmericanVision.com). This is part two of the six parts of the interview.

"Edmund Burke, 1729-1797 was an Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist, and philosopher who, after relocating to England, served for many years in the House of Commons of Great Britain as a member of the Whig party. He is mainly remembered for his support of the cause of the American Revolutionaries, and for his later opposition to the French Revolution. The latter led to his becoming the leading figure within the conservative faction of the Whig party, which he dubbed the "Old Whigs", in opposition to the pro-French-Revolution "New Whigs," led by Charles James Fox. Burke was praised by both conservatives and liberals in the nineteenth century and since the twentieth century he has generally been viewed as the philosophical founder of modern conservatism, as well as a representative of classical liberalism." -From wikipedia

Monarchist Edmund Burke, one of England's most articulate conservatives of the 18th century, and pamphleteer Thomas Paine, a leading radical and revolutionary of the American Colonies, are here attending an imaginary dinner party at the home of playwright Richard Sheridan.
In the middle of dinner, the servants take over the house, and upon the threat of death, these friendly adversaries are forced to defend their philosophies.
Bernard Wilets directed and wrote a number of outstanding dramas based on historical political figures in his "Man and the State" series, and this is perhaps my favorite one, not only for the exceptional acting and writing, but also for the terrific surprise ending.
