The rise of ISIS, explained in 6 minutes
Its history goes back way before the group ever existed.
Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO
In the few short years since the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria formed, it has done the seemingly impossible, seizing vast areas of the Middle East to form a mini-state it calls a reincarnation of the ancient Caliphate. It is at war with all its neighbors and virtually the entire world, yet someone remains, and is launching increasingly deadly terror attacks abroad.
To understand how this terrible group came about and how it has grown so powerful, you need to understand the story behind its rise. And that is a story that goes back decades, to long before ISIS existed.

10,000 ISIS Fighters: The Hidden Army in the Desert | Full Documentary
In March 2019, the Islamic State was officially defeated with the fall of Baghouz, formally ending the caliphate’s claim to any territory. 27,000 men, women and children were taken prisoner. But the fall of Baghouz did not mean the end of ISIS. Its members have never accepted defeat, and the group has reformed to try and organise its return.

An intense video posted to social media by peshmergaswe, a Swedish citizen who traveled to Iraq and Syria as a volunteer to fight ISIS, shows a close range linear ambush of two IS fighters attempting to make an escape in a Toyota Hilux pickup truck. The footage was reportedly filmed in the Haditha Desert of Iraq.
The ambush, carried out by Kurdish-led SDF fighters is haphazardly executed, but effective. The attackers spray past their buddies and run in and out of each other's sectors of fire while cyclic fire erupts across the line. To see the uncensored/aftermath version; click the card link in the video.

The UN estimates that there are 10,000 ISIS fighters in the desert between Iraq and Syria. It was only a few months ago when jihadists attacked a security post in the Kirkuk region of Iraq and killed 9 police officers. Another 10,000 jihadists are still behind bars today – whom the Kurds would like to try for their many crimes. For now however, this has proven impossible. In January 2022, ISIS fighters attacked the al-Hasakah prison in Syria, where many former fighters were locked up, in an attempt to reassemble their army. It took ten days for Kurdish forces to reconquer the prison – which resulted in multiple fatalities during the chaos. Since then, the trials have stopped. In
Afghanistan, Pakistan, Southeast Asia , Egypt, the Sahel region, Somalia and Mozambique, organisations that have sworn allegiance to the Islamic State are only increasing their attacks and summary executions.
Then there’s the question of what to do with the women and children. The Roj and Al Hol camps, where women and children are imprisoned, have become powder kegs. In August, Syrian forces discovered machine guns, rocket launchers and explosives in these very camps. We met some of the foreign women imprisoned there, desperate to return home. For the children, unfortunately these camps are not the worst case scenario for them. In Syrian Kurdistan, some live in prison with their mothers, who have been sentenced for terrorism – one four year old boy recounted how his mother told him he would grow up to be a jihadist and kill everyone.

As ISIS continue to make territorial gains in the Middle East, they are also becoming a dynamic presence online. This report looks at one recent campaign video, designed to disseminate their radical manifesto.
"These are your passports, O Tyrants all over the world", one anonymous jihadist declares to a baying crowd as he spears a pile of the documents with a machete. Within the organisation's mission to establish a unitary caliphate across the region, such credentials are obsolete: mere vestiges of a by-gone age of national boundaries and rival political identities. "I swear by Allah, we will cleanse the Arabian peninsula of you, you defiled ones." Films such as this, depicting the brutal imposition of a supposedly utopian Islamic supra-state - often by means of summary executions and banning opposing sects from public life - are a sign of the increasing sophistication of ISIS' propaganda strategy. They depict well-armed, organised militants, and are cause for concern for Iraqi ex-pats struggling to reach relatives back home. "ISIS have forgotten the real religion, and now they are full of hate and revenge", says Salahaddin al-Beati, who has lived in Switzerland since 1996. With voices from all sides of the conflict, this report offers a chilling insight into a markedly 21st century insurgency.
