In seven of eight Senate races the incumbent senator facing a serious or semi-serious primary challenger is a Republican. That's in contrast to incumbent Democrats. In the eight races just one includes an incumbent Democrat with a primary challenger.

Here's the latest on the ongoing family feud over Lotte Group:
Shin Dong-bin moved a step closer to gaining complete control of Lotte Group, Korea's fifth-largest conglomerate, after shareholders of Tokyo-based Lotte Holdings, which controls South Korea's fifth-largest conglomerate, voted to keep the incumbent chairman in his current position.
During the meeting in Tokyo, shareholders rejected the request made by his elder brother Shin Dong-joo to dismiss his younger brother from the company's board of directors.
And to Dong-joo's claims his father Shin Kyuk-ho handpicked him as his successor,... Dong-bin says the 94-year-old founder of the group is unable to make reasonable judgments due to mental health problems.
Dong-joo was stripped of his executive titles at three of Lotte's Japanese affiliates in early 2015... and has been struggling to claw his way back up the ladder.

The incumbent, in politics, is the existing holder of a political office. This term is usually used in reference to elections, in which races can often be defined as being between an incumbent and non-incumbent(s). For example, in the 2004 United States presidential election, George W. Bush was the incumbent, because he was the president in the current term while the election sought to determine the president for the following term. A race without an incumbent is referred to as an open seat.
The word "incumbent" is derived from the Latin verb incumbere, literally meaning "to lean or lay upon" with the present participle stem incumbent-, "leaning a variant of encumber, while encumber is derived from the root cumber, most appropriately defined: "4. To occupy obstructively or inconveniently; to block fill up with what hinders freedom of motion or action; to burden, load."
In general, incumbents have structural advantages over challengers during elections. The timing of elections may be determined by the incumbent instead of a set schedule. For most political offices, the incumbent often has more name recognition due to their previous work in the office. Incumbents also have easier access to campaign finance, as well as government resources (such as the franking privilege) that can be indirectly used to boost a campaign. An election (especially for a legislature) in which no incumbent is running is often called an open seat; because of the lack of incumbency advantage, these are often amongst the most hotly-contested races in any election.

JB Straubel (born Jeffrey B. Straubel, December 20, 1975) is part of the founding team and the Chief Technical Officer of Tesla Motors, an electric car company based in San Carlos, California. At Tesla, Straubel oversees the technical and engineering design of the vehicles. Straubel also has responsibility for new technology evaluation, R&D, technical diligence review of key vendors and partners, IP, and systems validation testing.
In 2008, Straubel was named to the MIT Technology Review TR35 as one of the top 35 innovators in the world under the age of 35. He spoke at MIT's Emtech conference on a panel on green transportation in Boston, MA in September 2008. Straubel was honored to keynote the Stanford Alumni EDAY in July 2008. In July 2008, Straubel spoke on a transportation panel "Progression Toward EVs" at Plug In 2008. In early 2008, Stanford Magazine featured Straubel's role in growing the Stanford presence at Tesla Motors. In September 2007, JB spoke on an energy panel titled "Clean, Secure, and Efficient Energy" at Stanford University along with former Secretary of State, George Shultz, where he emphasized the importance of education about climate change, and decreasing the CO2 intensity of our current energy production methods.Popular Science magazine featured Straubel in a full-length article in April 2007. His photograph was shown in The Economist in July 2006, taking Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger for a drive at the Tesla Roadster unveiling in Santa Monica, California. In March 2012, Straubel will be speaking at the DESIGN West conference, produced by UBM Electronics, at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, CA.

"Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's 12-point loss in a weekend runoff ended up closer than several polls suggested it could be. But an Associated Press analysis of the returns show that a slide in turnout simply wasn't enough for Landrieu to recover the ground she'd lost since her last victory six years ago. Saturday's vote resulted in a comfortable win for Rep. Bill Cassidy, a Baton Rouge Republican who will give the GOP a 54-seat majority when the Senate convenes in January. Cassidy ended up with a 151,231-vote advantage over Landrieu, who led an eight-candidate field in the Nov. 4 primary ballot, finishing 16,349 votes ahead Cassidy. Here's the latest on the ongoing family feud over Lotte Group:
Shin Dong-bin moved a step closer to gaining complete control of Lotte Group, Korea's fifth-largest conglomerate, after shareholders of Tokyo-based Lotte Holdings, which controls South Korea's fifth-largest conglomerate, voted to keep the incumbent chairman in his current position.
During the meeting in Tokyo, shareholders rejected the request made by his elder brother Shin Dong-joo to dismiss his younger brother from the company's board of directors.
And to Dong-joo's claims his father Shin Kyuk-ho handpicked him as his successor,... Dong-bin says the 94-year-old founder of the group is unable to make reasonable judgments due to mental health problems.

But an Associated Press analysis of the returns show that a slide in turnout simply wasn't enough for Landrieu to recover the ground she'd lost since her last victory six years ago.
Saturday's vote resulted in a comfortable win for Rep. Bill Cassidy, a Baton Rouge Republican who will give the GOP a 54-seat majority when the Senate convenes in January.
Cassidy ended up with a 151,231-vote advantage over Landrieu, who led an eight-candidate field in the Nov. 4 primary ballot, finishing 16,349 votes ahead Cassidy. But, as expected, the congressman picked up enough votes from vanquished GOP rivals to avoid any political drama as returns rolled in."* The Young Turks hosts John Iadarola (TYT University), Ben Mankiewicz and Wes Clark Jr break it down.

"Dia maju independen nggak cukup pengumpulan KTP-nya. Makanya dia pindah ke Gerindra karena nggak bisa independen, sama Teman Ahok juga," kata Boy.
"Saya nggak tahu Ahok ngerti nggak permainan partai. Kan kalau mau menarik kader ya sowan baik-baik. Jangan ngancem-ngancem dua minggu. Kalau ngomong di luar seakan-akan udah ngancem," sambung Boy.
Suara keras ke Ahok juga dilontarkan oleh musisi yang juga sekarang berstatus bakal cagub DKI dari PKB, Ahmad Dhani. Ahmad Dhani menduga Ahok bakal memamerkan kesuksesannya memimpin DKI dalam kampanye mendatang. Bagi Ahmad Dhani tak peduli dengan semua itu.
"Tim incumbent akan menyuarakan ke publik Jakarta bahwa dia punya track record. Opini akan digiring dan masyarakat akan menilai itu. Saya preketek sebagai warga asal Surabaya," tutur Ahmad Dhani usai bertemu Yusril Ihza Mahendra di kediamannya di Pondok Indah, Jakarta Selatan,
Dhani mengingatkan bahwa incumbent juga bisa kalah. Dia mengambil contoh saat Jokowi-Ahok meski disurvei kalah namun nyatanya mengalahkan Fauzi Bowo (Foke) yang berstatus incumbent pada Pilgub tahun 2012 silam.
"Incumbent konotasi lebih kuat. Seperti Fauzi Bowo lebih kuat dulu dalam survei tetapi bisa kalah oleh Jokowi. Jadi wajar," kilah pentolan Dewa itu.

Suhu politik jelang Pilgub DKI luar biasa panas. Semakin mendekati pendaftaran cagub DKI dinamika kian panas, cagub incumbent Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) pun panen 'titel' baru.
Ahok saat ini tengah menunggu jawaban PDIP tentang rencana dia berduet dengan Djarot Saiful Hidayat di Pilgub DKI. Ahok berharap PDIP bersikap dalam waktu dekat karena pendaftaran cagub lewat jalur independen juga bakal segera dibuka. Jika Djarot ditolak, Ahok pun sudah mempersiapkan PNS DKI Heru Budi Hartono sebagai pendampingnya.
Namun pernyataan Ahok seputar meminta jawaban PDIP ini menuai tanggapan dingin dari elite PDIP. Ketua DPD DKI PDIP yang belum lama ini mengajukan pengunduran diri, Boy Sadikin, menganggap ini adalah bentuk kesombongan Ahok.
"Sombong sekali. Kok PDIP diancam dua minggu. Dia nggal ingat dulu sebelum ditarik? Dulu kan PDIP tahunya Jokowi, kita lalu sama-sama dengan Gerindra, Gerindra mengajukan Ahok," ungkap Boy di rumahnya, Jl Borobudur, Menteng, Jakarta Pusat, Jumat (4/3/2016).
Boy mengingatkan Ahok bahwa saat Pilgub 2012 lalu, ia gagal saat ingin maju dari jalur independen. Sehingga akhirnya Ahok memilih untuk maju bersama Gerindra yang berkoalisi dengan PDIP.
"Dia maju independen nggak cukup pengumpulan KTP-nya. Makanya dia pindah ke Gerindra karena nggak bisa independen, sama Teman Ahok juga," kata Boy.
"Saya nggak tahu Ahok ngerti nggak permainan partai. Kan kalau mau menarik kader ya sowan baik-baik. Jangan ngancem-ngancem dua minggu. Kalau ngomong di luar seakan-akan udah ngancem," sambung Boy.

His close contender and leading opposition leader Kizza Besigye got 35 percent of the total votes.
"Candidate Yoweri Museveni who has obtained the highest number of votes in the election and the votes cast in his favor were more than 50 percent of the valued votes cast in the election, the commission declares Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the elected president of the republic of Uganda," announced Badru Kiggundu, chairman of the electoral commission.
However, the country's oppositions have rejected the results by the electoral commission saying the election was rigged.
"We will just simply continue fighting for our voices, because you see the rigging of elections is taking away voices of the people, that's all," said Kizza Besigye, the opposition leader.
The European Union Election Observer Mission has also raised concern over the competence of the electoral commission to deliver a free and fair election.
"The (electoral) commission lacked transparency in its decisions and failed to inform the voters and contestants on key elements of the electoral process in a timely and comprehensive manner," said Edward Kukan, head observer of European Union Mission on Saturday.
Top opposition candidate Kizza Besigye was placed under house arrest after voting, he is calling for an independent audit of the results from the presidential polls.
This win gives President Museveni a fifth term in office, making him one of Africa's longest serving rulers.

When the calendar turns to March in this year of the irate voter, the first wave of congressional Republicans will find out whether they have their very own Dave Brat waiting for them.
Brat was an underfunded, obscure college professor who shocked the political world in 2014 by ousting House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in what was supposed to be a no-contest Republican primary in Virginia. He now holds the Richmond area seat and is one of the chamber’s more conservative and recalcitrant members.
Next month, GOP House members in a crescent curving from Texas to Illinois face the first congressional primaries in this incumbent-bashing, anti-establishment season of billionaire Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, the leading Republican presidential contenders.
Nearly all House members are expected to survive. But a few face contests being watched for possible upsets by conservative challengers. Among them: Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady of Texas, and Reps. Martha Roby and Bradley Byrne of Alabama and John Shimkus of Illinois.
“It’s an open question whether we’ll see any serious candidates on the fringe right,” said Rob Engstrom, national political director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has started TV advertising backing Roby and Byrne and could engage in other House races. He said that March 1, when Alabama, Arkansas and Texas have the initial House primaries, is “a very important day to measure and determine what the score is.”
Mississippi House primaries are March 8, followed by Ohio and Illinois a week later. March 15 House contests in North Carolina have been delayed until June because of a dispute over redrawing district boundaries.
As usual, most incumbents have overwhelming financial and name-recognition advantages. In Texas, Brady’s campaign raised $1.6 million last year, compared with $64,000 for the best financed of his three challengers, pool company owner and former state Rep. Steve Toth.
That edge has long made most officeholders impossible to topple. In 2014, just five sitting House members were defeated in party primaries. But 2016 poses a new test, with voters’ ill feelings toward Washington, fanned by Trump and Cruz, fueling conservatives’ hopes of defeating Republicans deemed too willing to cut deals.
“The frustration and anger that’s out there would indicate that this is the year you get beat from the right,” said Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., like Brat a member of the rebellious House Freedom Caucus that last year helped push House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to resign from Congress. “If you don’t get beat this year, you will be golden for a long time.”
The surly mood has prompted the conservative Club for Growth to run hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of TV ads attacking Shimkus and Rep. Renee Ellmers in a now-delayed North Carolina race. Club commercials also back conservative Warren Davidson’s bid for Boehner’s vacant seat in western Ohio, which if successful would be a symbolic coup.

He now holds the Richmond area seat and is one of the chamber’s more conservative and recalcitrant members.
Next month, GOP House members in a crescent curving from Texas to Illinois face the first congressional primaries in this incumbent-bashing, anti-establishment season of billionaire Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, the leading Republican presidential contenders.
Nearly all House members are expected to survive. But a few face contests being watched for possible upsets by conservative challengers. Among them: Ways and Means Committee Chairman Kevin Brady of Texas, and Reps. Martha Roby and Bradley Byrne of Alabama and John Shimkus of Illinois.
“It’s an open question whether we’ll see any serious candidates on the fringe right,” said Rob Engstrom, national political director of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which has started TV advertising backing Roby and Byrne and could engage in other House races. He said that March 1, when Alabama, Arkansas and Texas have the initial House primaries, is “a very important day to measure and determine what the score is.”
Mississippi House primaries are March 8, followed by Ohio and Illinois a week later. March 15 House contests in North Carolina have been delayed until June because of a dispute over redrawing district boundaries.
As usual, most incumbents have overwhelming financial and name-recognition advantages. In Texas, Brady’s campaign raised $1.6 million last year, compared with $64,000 for the best financed of his three challengers, pool company owner and former state Rep. Steve Toth.
That edge has long made most officeholders impossible to topple. In 2014, just five sitting House members were defeated in party primaries. But 2016 poses a new test, with voters’ ill feelings toward Washington, fanned by Trump and Cruz, fueling conservatives’ hopes of defeating Republicans deemed too willing to cut deals.
“The frustration and anger that’s out there would indicate that this is the year you get beat from the right,” said Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., like Brat a member of the rebellious House Freedom Caucus that last year helped push House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to resign from Congress. “If you don’t get beat this year, you will be golden for a long time.”
The surly mood has prompted the conservative Club for Growth to run hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of TV ads attacking Shimkus and Rep. Renee Ellmers in a now-delayed North Carolina race. Club commercials also back conservative Warren Davidson’s bid for Boehner’s vacant seat in western Ohio, which if successful would be a symbolic coup.

About the Presentation
Why do some new technologies become dominant while others fail or coexist with the old? We explore this question by first developing model-driven theory using a comprehensive system dynamics model of technology and industry disruption. Our research uncovers firm-, product-, and environment-level drivers responsible for the success or failure of a new technology and a firm. We then use appropriate case studies to show why in some situations incumbents retain market share, while in others new entrants drive them out.
About the Speakers
Dr. Chintan Vaishnav
Chintan Vaishnav is a postdoctoral researcher across MIT's Sloan School of Management, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), and Department of Political Science. His research and action broadly focuses on two existing challenges: understanding the implications of rapidly changing technology for public policy and managerial decisions; and utilizing technology to effectively solve the problems stemming from gross socio-economic inequities. Chintan holds a PhD in Technology, Management and Policy from MIT's Engineering Systems Division, and has several years of engineering research experience at the Bell Labs.
Sergey Naumov
Sergey Naumov is a System Design and Management Fellow. His current research focuses on understanding dynamics of the diffusion of innovations in rapidly changing environment of customer preferences. Sergey received an MS in Mechanical Engineering, cum laude, and was previously Head of Information Technology at a Moscow-based battery manufacturer and R&D; Director at a start-up energy storage company in Germany, working on corporate IT strategy and network and security issues.
