On February 2, 2013, hundreds of students, teachers, and community volunteers gathered at Inderkum High School in Natomas for the 33rd Annual Sacramento County Academic Decathlon. Everything that’s wrong with the life in a police state is summed up in this video – from a cop too used to beating civilians and getting away with it, through police superior being diplomatic because a video of the abuse was leaked, but still being unwilling to hide that he supports police brutality and will go out of his way working with his bully subordinates to justify it, all the way to the pro violence and pro establishment mainstream media that will report on the incident if they get an exclusive video, but will still dedicate enough airtime justifying police brutality.
It all started with a man, identified as John Madison Reyes, daring to ask Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputy to move his car from an intersection. In a police state, you just don’t tell cops what to do. They are not there for you. Laws don’t apply to them and they are used to getting away with anything, because prior to the advent of cell phone cameras, there never was sufficient evidence to prove them wrong.
The daring man was tased, and beaten with a flashlight while the deputy stomped his head into the street. He was then jailed for resisting arrest.
Notice how the mainstream media tells you that John Madison Reyes was “resisting arrest“, but never touches what the probable cause was for the arrest. No mention of any actual underlying charge that would justify the arrest for him to resist. Cause you know – why you’re being arrested is not important. Except perhaps the officer having a reason to believe that you would resist arrest if he initiated the arrest, so he preemptively arrested you so you can’t do that. In other words, you are charged with conspiracy to initiate intent to resist arrest.
Sacramento County Undersheriff Jaime Lewis then tells the media that had John Madison Reyes simply allowed himself to be arrested, he would not have been beaten. The Undersheriff too fails to explain why John Madison Reyes was being arrested in the first place. He simply expects that if a cop decides to arrest someone, they need to comply or else they get beat up and he’ll consider the beating justified. That, I assume, would especially be the case if you had the nerve to request the cops to cease blocking traffic. The audacity!
By stating that “if the citizen had complied at the beginning then we wouldn’t be sitting here talking right now“, Undersheriff Jaime Lewis essentially said that it’s okay to keep beating a civilians even after he’s been subdued. The head boot stomp, followed by wrenching the arm back and hitting it with a flashlight, after the guy had 100,000 Volts run through is body, is all kosher by this guy.
Because the video of the beating was recorded, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office had no choice but to begin the usual coverup, and placed the deputy on paid administrative leave. They refused to release his name.
Paid administrative leave – basically a paid vacation for beating and stomping on someone, cause the video has not gone viral. Had it been the case, they would go with plan B – termination, until such time as the case falls out of public knowledge at which time the deputy is reinstated with backpay and benefits. Ta da – welcome to the police state.

During the event, student decathletes participated as a 9 member team against other schools. The most exciting and visual part of the competition is a high-energy team event called the Super Quiz, which is open to the public. Teams of students are seated at desks on a gymnasium floor and answer questions posed by a moderator. The correct answers are flashed on a large screen. Hundreds of fans sit in the bleachers look on and cheer loudly as if they were watching an athletic competition.

Professor Schiavenza retired in 2010 from the Office of the Attorney General, Department of Justice, as a Senior Assistant Attorney; named Outstanding Professor of the Year at Lincoln Law School in 1992, 1997, 2004, and 2009. In 1991, he received the Attorney General's award for outstanding achievement in litigation and client representation

Roger White is the Political Affairs Coordinator for the Sacramento County Chapter of the ACLU. Roger has been engaged in the fight against mass incarceration and political repression as a policy researcher, writer, and organizer for over 15 years. Roger is a graduate of Howard University School of Law and is currently a Senior Research Analyst for the Service Employees International Union Local 1000
Mickie Enkoji has worked for more than 20 years as a journalist at daily newspapers in California including the Sacramento Bee, where she covered, among other things, criminal justice issues. She graduated from California State University, Sacramento, with a degree in government-journalism. She is now a member of the United Auto Workers Local 2350
Claire White is the National Lawyers Guild, Student National Vice President. She is passionate about issues including veterans' rights, anti-war activism, prisoners' rights and prison reform, and constantly strives to build solidarity among social justice warriors of different stripes. Motivated to organize around peace and veterans issues by her service in the United States Air Force, Claire also serves on the board of the King Hall Veterans Association, the Veterans Democratic Club of Sacramento County and has been instrumental in the foundation of the student run Veterans Legal Services Clinic at King Hall
