Upcoming 3D Platformers Adventure Games in 2015
3D
Platformers are seeing a revitalization in
2015. Many of these games were strongly inspired by old school platformers like
Banjo Kazooie and
Jak and Daxter. Many of these games are releasing thanks to Kickstarter and the online community as major publishers have forgotten about this genre.
Let's take a look at these upcoming 3D platformers.
Yooka Laylee
Yooka Laylee is the answer to platforming fans who loved Banjo Kazooie and all the games from the
N64 era. The game originated as a kickstarter which exceeded its goal within the first hour of launching.
Developed by former members of
Rare, this platformer looks fantastic. It has beautiful lush green environments and interesting characters.
Players will control Yooka the green chameleon and Laylee the purple bat. They have separate special moves as well as combined special moves to help them traverse the land. Some of these moves include sonar blasting, tongue whipping, and sky soaring. The soundtrack is produced by
David Wise, known for
Donkey Kong Country, and
Grant Kirkhope known for Banjo Kazooie. The game could be categorized as a collectathon as there are tons of collectibles that expand the gameplay in a meaningful way. The game will also introduce play tonics which are modifiers that effect how fast you run, hit, or fly. There will also be diversity in the levels. The demo level shows a classic jungle, but there have also been hints of snow levels. Yooka Laylee is releasing on PC, Xbox One,
PS4, and Wii U.
Legend Of Kay
Anniversary
Legend Of Kay is probably is probably the biggest sleeper hit in our lineup. It was a cult classic
3D platformer when it came out back on the
Playstation 2, but it's finally receiving a remaster from publisher
Nordic games. The game puts you in control of Kay, a hotheaded young cat and a martial arts student. His martial arts school is being shutdown and he has to journey out of town to save it. The game has a dynamic combination of platforming and hack and slash fighting. The combat and the weapons you get to use it make the game tons of fun. The remaster features high resolution textures, more detailed character models, modern rendering techniques, and crystal clear surround sound.
Legend of Kay is scheduled for release on June 30 for both the PS4 and Wii U.
Clive N Wrench
Clive N Wrench is a game on
Steam Greenlight that wants to bring back the classic platforming from the 90s.
It's influenced by games like Banjo-Kazooie,
Jak & Daxter, and
Spyro. You play as Clive and Wrench as they try to stop Dr Daucus and save the world from an army of mutants. A bunny and monkey fighting combo, the game is very tongue in cheek and is not afraid to inject some humor. The game will have 10 main worlds that are large and from multiple time eras. Along with mini games and side quests to keep you busy. The game is built primarily by one developer so it's impressive considering the resources.
A Hat
In Time
A Hat In Time was recently backed on Kickstarter and has it's own unique features. It's built on the
Unreal Engine and looks incredibly vivid. The movement is very smooth as you can double jump, float, and melee bash your enemies.
The world is very dynamic as each area requires you to use platforming skills and techniques in different ways. You play as Hat
Kid, a time traveller who is collecting the “
Time Pieces” around the universe to stop the mischievous Mustache
Girl who seeks to use them for evil purposes. The most exciting feature about this game? It has co-op online and couch co-op complete with races to see who is the fastest player.
FreezeMe
FreezeMe is another 3d platformer inspired by N64 games. The main distinguishing mechanic is that the protagonist “R” can take pictures and “freeze” for a short period of time enemies and objects, generating new and interesting gameplay situations. The game has colorful environments and large open worlds.
