Welcome to an introduction to Input Devices. Gain the description as well as examples of input devices and the difference between manual and automatic input devices.
Make sure you use this video as a starting point. We suggest that you research the different manual and automatic input devices (what they are and when they should/could be used). This will help you with the questions below:
E Grade
1. What is the difference between manual and automatic input devices?
2. State an input device you would use to capture the following information: a. Recording video clips for uploading to YouTube b. Checking goods at the supermarket. c. Reading the information stored on bank cheques. d. Obtaining a digital copy of a printed document.
3. Name 2 input devices you could use to capture digital images.
C Grade
4. Describe the advantages that have occurred as a result of using bar codes instead of entering prices at the checkout. (In your answer discuss the advantages to a. Customers, b. sales assistants and c. managers).
5. Explain how OMR is used to mark examination scripts.
A Grade
6. Discuss the best input device(s) you could use to input commands into a system when: a. you are in a situation where you cannot use your hands. b. you are in a very noisy and dirty environment.
7. MICR equipment can be very expensive. Would it not be better to use OCR equipment for reading information stored on cheques instead?

A 'keyboard' is a human interface device which is represented as a layout of buttons. Each button, or key, can be used to either input a linguistic character to a computer, or to call upon a particular function of the computer. Traditional keyboards use spring-based buttons, though newer variations employ virtual keys, or even projected keyboards.

3DTouch is a novel 3D wearable input device, worn on the fingertip for 3D manipulation tasks. 3DTouch is self-contained, and designed to universally work on various 3D platforms. The device employs touch input for the benefits of passive haptic feedback, and movement stability. On the other hand, with touch interaction, 3DTouch is conceptually less fatiguing to use over many hours than 3D spatial input devices. Modular solutions like 3DTouch opens up a whole new design space for interaction techniques to further develop on. 3DTouch is a novel 3D wearable input device, worn on the fingertip for 3D manipulation tasks. 3DTouch is self-contained, and designed to universally work on various 3D platforms. The device employs touch input for the benefits of passive haptic feedback, and movement stability. On the other hand, with touch interaction, 3DTouch is conceptually less fatiguing to use over many hours than 3D spatial input devices. Abstract:
Articulation of 3D characters requires control over many degrees of freedom: a difficult task with standard 2D interfaces. We present a tangible input device composed of interchangeable, hot-pluggable parts. Embedded sensors measure the device's pose at rates suitable for real-time editing and animation. Splitter parts allow branching to accommodate any skeletal tree. During assembly, the device recognizes topological changes as individual parts or pre-assembled subtrees are plugged and unplugged.
