In this interview with Gary Krupp and Frank Oliveri, the evidence related to the actions of the pope during the war are discussed in detail. The Vatican gave Cornwell access to secret documents so he could disprove rumors of Pius XII's collusion with the Nazis, but instead, these papers only confirmed evidence of such claims. Despite damning allegations made against him, Pope Pius XII was declared "venerable" a posthumous recognition of virtue - in September 2000, putting him one step closer to official sainthood. He must next be declared "beatified" (blessed), a title bestowed only on martyrs or those who have performed miracles."

This 1939 silent newsreel was originally made for private home viewing, and sold in American department stores. The film shows the process by which Pope Pius XII was selected, and features footage of many of the Cardinals who participated in the process including American George Cardinal Mundelein and Dennis Cardinal Dougherty.
Pope Pius XI died on 10 February 1939. Several historians have interpreted the conclave to choose his successor as facing a choice between a diplomatic or a spiritual candidate, and they view Pacelli's diplomatic experience, especially with Germany, as one of the deciding factors in his election on 2 March 1939, his 63rd birthday, after only one day of deliberation and three ballots. He was the first cardinal Secretary of State to be elected pope since Clement IX in 1667. He was one of only two men known to have served as Camerlengo immediately prior to being elected as pope (the other being Pope Leo XIII). According to rumours, he asked for another ballot to be taken to ensure the validity of his election. After his election was indeed confirmed, he chose the name Pius XII in honour of his immediate predecessor.
His coronation took place on 12 March 1939. Upon being elected pope he was also formally the Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, prefect of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office, prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Churches and prefect of the Sacred Consistorial Congregation. There was however a Cardinal-Secretary to run these bodies on a day-to-day basis.
Pope Pius XII (Italian: Pio XII); 2 March 1876 – 9 October 1958), reigned from 2 March 1939 to his death in 1958. Before his election to the papacy, Pacelli served as secretary of the Department of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs, papal nuncio to Germany (1917–1929), and Cardinal Secretary of State, in which capacity he worked to conclude treaties with European and Latin American nations, most notably the Reichskonkordat with Nazi Germany, with which most historians believe the Vatican sought to protect the Church in Germany while Adolf Hitler sought the destruction of "political Catholicism". A pre-war critic of Nazism, Pius XII lobbied world leaders to avoid war and, as Pope at the outbreak of war, issued Summi Pontificatus, expressing dismay at the invasion of Poland, reiterating Church teaching against racial persecution and calling for love, compassion and charity to prevail over war.
While the Vatican was officially neutral during the war, Pius XII maintained links to the German Resistance, used diplomacy to aid the victims of the war and lobby for peace and spoke out against race-based murders and other atrocities. The Reichskonkordat of 1933 and Pius's leadership of the Catholic Church during World War II remain the subject of controversy—including allegations of public silence and inaction about the fate of the Jews. After the war Pius XII advocated peace and reconciliation, including lenient policies towards Axis and Axis-satellite nations. The Church experienced severe persecution and mass deportations of Catholic clergy in the Eastern Bloc. Pius XII was a staunch opponent of Communism and of the Italian Communist Party. Pius XII explicitly invoked ex cathedra papal infallibility with the dogma of the Assumption of Mary in his 1950 Apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus. His magisterium includes almost 1,000 addresses and radio broadcasts. His forty-one encyclicals include Mystici corporis, the Church as the Body of Christ; Mediator Dei on liturgy reform; and Humani generis on the Church's positions on theology and evolution. He eliminated the Italian majority in the College of Cardinals in 1946.
Pius XII suffered from the shadow of ill health in 1954 which would continue until his death in 1958. He was made a Servant of God by Pope John Paul II in 1990 and Pope Benedict XVI declared Pius XII Venerable on 19 December 2009.
Pius XII was the subject of a controversial book entitled "Hitler's Pope" by author John Cromwell, that explores the charge that he assisted in the legitimization of Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime in Germany, through the pursuit of a Reichskonkordat in 1933. The book is critical of Pius' conduct during the Second World War, arguing that he did not do enough, or speak out enough, against the Holocaust.

The process of Innocent's beatification was introduced in 1714 by Benedict XIV and continued by Clement XI and Clement XII; but French influence and the accusation of Jansenism caused it to be suspended in 1744. In the 20th century it was reintroduced, and Pope Pius XII (193958) announced his beatification on 7 October 1956. The feast day of Pope Blessed Innocent XI is 12 August, the date of his death.
Pope Blessed Innocent XI (16 May 1611 12 August 1689), born Benedetto Odescalchi, was Pope of the Roman Catholic Church from 1676 to 1689.
His body today lies with the bodies of Pope St Pius X (190314) and Blessed Pope John XXIII (195863) at the Vatican. The face and hands are lined with silver coating. His monument (1697-1704) in Saint Peter's was designed and sculpted by Pierre-Étienne Monnot.

http://thefilmarchive.org/
Yad Vashem, the state of Israel's official Holocaust memorial, has generally been critical of Pope Pius XII, the pope during The Holocaust. For decades, Pius XII has been nominated unsuccessfully for recognition as Righteous Among the Nations, an honor Yad Vashem confers on non-Jews who saved Jewish lives during the Holocaust altruistically and at risk to their own lives.
Yad Vashem was created by the Knesset in 1953. The nominations process for designation as Righteous among the Nations has been administered by a committee chaired by a justice of the Supreme Court of Israel since 1963. Dr. Arieh Kubovy, an early chairman of the Yad Vashem Memorial authority, was somewhat at odds with Pius XII over his unsuccessful attempts to induce the pope to effect the return of Jewish children baptized during the Holocaust by Catholic institutions.
Nominations may only be made by Jews and may not concern the rescue of Jews converted to Catholicism during the Holocaust. The honor has been extended to two of Pius XII's nuncios: Angelo Rotta (in Hungary) and Andrea Cassulo (in Romania).
Rabbi David Dalin proposed such a nomination in his 2005 book The Myth of Hitler's Pope, but it is unclear if he himself made any formal nomination with Yad Vashem. Sister Margherita Marchione, a Catholic nun who has written many books defending Pius XII against his critics, stated around the same time "I have asked Yad Vashem to posthumously recognize and honor him as 'Righteous among the nations'", although as a non-Jew she would be unable to make such a nomination.
Most recently, Gary Krupp, the founder of the Pave the Way Foundation, announced in September 2009 that he is preparing documents such a nomination. Krupp has announced similar intentions for at least a year. According to Prof. John K. Roth, writing in the Journal of Church and State, "the chances that Yad Vashem will make Pius XII one of the 'Righteous Among the Nations' are slim".
Pope John Paul II spoke at Yad Vashem during his 2000 trip to the Middle East, but declined to directly comment on the conduct of his predecessor.
In 2007, the Vatican ambassador to Israel, Msgr. Antonio Franco, refused to attend an annual memorial service in Jerusalem in protest over the aforementioned caption. Yad Vashem responded that it was "shocked" by Franco's actions and called on the Vatican to open its wartime archives to researchers. Yad Vashem defended the caption but stated that it was "prepared to continue examining the issue". A spokesperson for the museum stated: "The Holocaust history museum presents the historical truth on Pope Pius XII as is known to scholars today. It is unacceptable to use diplomatic pressure when dealing with historical research."

Arturo Mari probably spent more time with St. John Paul II than anyone else. He worked more than 53 years as a papal photographer and produced millions of photographs of Pius XII, John XXIII, Paul VI, John Paul I, John Paul II and Benedict XVI.
He began taking pictures for the popes when he was 16 years and recalled the beginning of his career, when he accompanied Pius XII to Vatican Radio on the outskirts of the Vatican City State. The short journey was like an international trip for a Pontiff as discreet as Pius XII.
Mari also attended the opening sessions of Vatican II and the first surprising trips outside the Vatican of now St. John XXIII to hospitals, prisons and even to the new Roman airport. But the Italian photographer’s international adventures began with John Paul II.
In this exculsive WITNESS interview with Fr. Thomas Rosica, you will meet a Vatican insider who takes us behind the scenes of the sometimes mysterious and secretive Vatican and offers us some amazing portraits of the human side of the Church.

More than half a (m) million pilgrims gathered in the Portuguese town of Fatima to attend the pope's beatification of a shepherd boy and girl whom he credits with a miracle that saved his life in a 1981 assassination attempt.
The crowds watched the pope beatify Jacinta Marto and her brother Francisco, who said the Virgin Mary appeared to them and their cousin Lucia dos Santos above an olive tree six times in 1917 and told them three secrets.
Dos Santos, who is now 93 and the only one of the three still alive, met the pope in Fatima on Saturday.
Pope John Paul the Second weaved through the cheering throng in Fatima for 40 minutes in his popemobile before the beatification.
The pope is said to have a special fondness for Fatima since 1981, when he was wounded in an assassination attempt in St. Peter's Square.
The shooting happened on May 13, the anniversary of the first apparition of the Virgin in Fatima, 110 kilometres (70 miles) north of Lisbon.
One of the two bullets that hit the pope is placed in a statue of the Virgin Mary at Fatima - a town of 8-thousand people.
When he came to Fatima on May 12 the following year to thank the Virgin, he survived another assassination attempt by a fundamentalist Spanish priest who lunged at him with a bayonet, accusing him of betraying the Church.
On Saturday, the crowds watched the pope beatify Jacinta Marto and her brother Francisco, who said the Virgin Mary appeared to them and their cousin Lucia dos Santos above an olive tree six times in 1917 and told them three secrets.
Many pilgrims hoped the pope would reveal the last of three secrets the shepherd children said the Virgin told them.
The first two foretold the end of World War I and the rise and fall of Communism.
Dos Santos, who is now 93, has told the third secret to the Vatican but successive popes have refused to disclose it.
She sat in silent prayer beside the tombs of her cousins before joining the beatification ceremony in Fatima's neo-Baroque basilica and meeting the pope.
The beatified shepherd children died of pneumonia two years after the visions, at the ages of 9 and 11.
The pope's visit to Fatima was expected to be his last foreign trip this year amid a heavy agenda of 2000 Holy Year commitments.

In the 1970s, Father Jorge Bergoglio faced a moment of truth: Would he stand up to Argentina's military neo-Nazis "disappearing" thousands including priests, or keep his mouth shut and his career on track? Like many other Church leaders, Pope Francis took the safe route, Robert Parry reports.
The election of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio as Pope Francis brings back into focus the troubling role of the Catholic hierarchy in blessing much of the brutal repression that swept Latin America in the 1970s and 1980s, killing and torturing tens of thousands of people including priests and nuns accused of sympathizing with leftists.
The Vatican's fiercely defensive reaction to the reemergence of these questions as they relate to the new Pope also is reminiscent of the pattern of deceptive denials that became another hallmark of that era when propaganda was viewed as an integral part of the "anticommunist" struggles, which were often supported financially and militarily by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Image: Pope John Paul II reprimanding Father Ernesto Cardenal at Managua Airport for Cardenal's support of "liberation theology" and his work with the Sandinista government.
It appears that Bergoglio, who was head of the Jesuit order in Buenos Aires during Argentina's grim "dirty war," mostly tended to his bureaucratic rise within the Church as Argentine security forces "disappeared" some 30,000 people for torture and murder from 1976 to 1983, including 150 Catholic priests suspected of believing in "liberation theology."
Much as Pope Pius XII didn't directly challenge the Nazis during the Holocaust, Father Bergoglio avoided any direct confrontation with the neo-Nazis who were terrorizing Argentina. Pope Francis's defenders today, like apologists for Pope Pius, claim he did intervene quietly to save some individuals. But no one asserts that Bergoglio stood up publicly against the "anticommunist" terror, as some other Church leaders did in Latin America, most notably El Salvador's Archbishop Oscar Romero who then became a victim of right-wing assassins in 1980.
Indeed, the predominant role of the Church hierarchy -- from the Vatican to the bishops in the individual countries -- was to give political cover to the slaughter and to offer little protection to the priests and nuns who advocated "liberation theology," i.e. the belief that Jesus did not just favor charity to the poor but wanted a just society that shared wealth and power with the poor.

George Weigel (born 1951) is an American author and political and social activist. He currently serves as a Distinguished Senior Fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Weigel was the Founding President of the James Madison Foundation. He is the author of the best-selling biography of Pope John Paul II, Witness to Hope and Tranquillitas Ordinis: The Present Failure and Future Promise of American Catholic Thought on War and Peace.
Weigel was born and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended St. Mary's Seminary and University. He later received his masters degree from St. Michael's College, University of Toronto. He has received 18 honorary doctorate degrees, as well as the papal cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice and the Gloria Artis Gold Medal from the Polish Ministry of Culture.
Weigel lived in Seattle, serving as Assistant Professor of Theology and Assistant Dean of Studies at the St. Thomas the Apostle Seminary School of Theology in Kenmore, and Scholar-in-Residence at the World Without War Council of Greater Seattle, before returning to Washington, D.C. as a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
Weigel served as the founding president of the James Madison Foundation (not to be confused with the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation) from 1986 to 1989. In 1994, he was a signer of the document Evangelicals and Catholics Together.
He currently serves as Distinguished Senior Fellow and Chair of Catholic Studies at the Ethics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C..
Each summer, Weigel and several other Catholic intellectuals from the United States, Poland, and across Europe conduct the Tertio Millennio Seminar on the Free Society in Krakow, in which they and an assortment of students from the United States, Poland, and several other emerging democracies in Central and Eastern Europe discuss Christianity within the context of liberal democracy and capitalism, with the papal encyclical Centesimus Annus being the focal point.
Weigel and his wife Joan live in North Bethesda, Maryland. He has three children.
He is a member of the advisory council of the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation.
Weigel writes and serves on the Institute board for the Institute for Religion and Public Life, which publishes First Things, an ecumenical publication that focuses on encouraging a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society.
The main body of Weigel's writings engage the issues of religion and culture.
Weigel advocates a U.S. foreign policy guided not by utopian notions about how nations should behave, but by moral reasoning.
"From the Iliad to Tolstoy and beyond, that familiar trope, “the fog of war,” has been used to evoke the millennia–old experience of the radical uncertainty of combat. Some analysts, however, take the trope of “the fog of war” a philosophical step further and suggest that warfare takes place beyond the reach of moral reason, in a realm of interest and necessity where moral argument is a pious diversion at best and, at worst, a lethal distraction from the deadly serious business at hand."
In some cases, he adds, moral reasoning may require that the United States support authoritarian regimes to fend off the greater evils of moral decay and threats to the security of the United States. For Weigel, America's shortcomings do not excuse her from pursuing the greater moral good.
Weigel achieved much fame for writing Witness to Hope, a biography of the late Pope John Paul II, which was also made into a documentary film. In 2004 Weigel wrote an article in Commentary magazine, entitled "The Cathedral and the Cube", in which he used the contrast between the modernist Grande Arche, and the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral, both located in Paris, France, to illustrate what he called a loss of "civilizational morale" in Western Europe, which he tied to the secular tyrannies of the 20th century, along with, more recently, plummeting birthrates and Europe's refusal to recognize the Christian roots of its culture. Weigel questions whether Europe can give an account of itself while denying the very moral tradition through which its culture arose: "Christians who share this conviction (that it is the will of God that Christians be tolerant of those who have a different view of God's will) -- can give an account of their defense of the other's freedom even if the other, skeptical and relativist, finds it hard to give an account of the freedom of the Christian." This is a theme sounded clearly by Marcello Pera and Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (from 2005 to 2013 Pope Benedict XVI), in their book Without Roots: the West, Relativism, Christianity, Islam, for which Weigel authored the foreword. In 2005, he expanded the article into a book, The Cube and the Cathedral: Europe, America, and Politics Without God.

Sir John Kerr breaks his silence to talk about the Whitlam Dismissal in this interview with Geoffrey Robertson.
Conducted in New Zealand, the interview is the only one I'm aware of in which Kerr talks at length about the events of November 11, 1975. He died on March 24, 1991, aged 76.
I think the program was shown on ABC TV on November 11, 1987.

But he did great things that will remain for the church forever. In future we will see the great achievements he made for the church throughout his papacy. His resignation from his mission is also a strong signal, and we will know and understand the motivation only afterwards. And we have to accept it as Christians, and we have to have faith in it."

STORYLINE:
It's a great privilege to serve under one Pope, but serving under six of them? That's exactly what Luciano Mariani from Castel Gandolfo has done.
Mariani, 69, is a member of the famous Maltese Order, also known as the Knights of Malta, and has served under popes in Castel Gandolfo since an early age.
The Mariani family has been securing the summer residence of Castel Gandolfo since 1882.
The Maltese Order is attached to the Vatican, and along with the Swiss Guards has provided security for popes throughout history.
Mariani met his first pope when he was a little boy - Pope Pius XII, just after the Second World War.
During the Second World War, the Vatican was a neutral country and Pope Pius XII opened the gates of Castel Gandolfo to an unverified number of refugees until the liberation of Rome on June 4, 1944.
Reflecting on Pope's Benedict XVI decision to resign, Mariani said it had left the Maltese Order in shock.
"This news about the pope coming left us shocked. We accepted the Pope's decision. This is a sign from God. It's a divine work," Mariani said.
Mariani owns a small hotel on the south gate of Gandolfo Castle, and his eyes are always turned to the castle and the Pope's needs.
Today, the Maltese Order will parade in front of Pope Benedict XVI as he arrives at Castel Gandolfo for the end of his papacy.
"Benedict is a great pope. He did a lot of beautiful and big things for the church," he said.
"In future we will see the great achievements he made for the church throughout his papacy," he added.
Mariani proudly flies the flags of the Maltese Order and of the Vatican on the balcony of his home.
Today the Maltese Order is is estimated to have around 13,000 members, with thousands more volunteers spread across 120 countries.
Their mission is to serve the poor and the sick regardless of race or religion.
