Slow match or match cord is the slow-burning cord or twine fuse used by early gunpowder musketeers, artillerymen, and soldiers to ignite matchlock muskets, cannons, and petards. Slow matches were most suitable for use around black-powder weapons because a slow match could be roughly handled without going out, and only presented a small glowing tip instead of a large flame that risked igniting nearby gunpowder.
The slow match attached to the lock of the matchlock gun was usually a length of hemp or flax cord that had been chemically treated to make it burn slowly and consistently for an extended period. In Japan, however, match cord was made from braiding together strands of bark from the Japanese cypress. The rate of burning was approximately 1 ft (305mm) per hour. The British Army estimated that a single soldier on guard duty, for one year, could use an entire mile worth of match cord. In practical use on a matchlock, both ends of the match cord were often ignited, as the flash of gunpowder in the flash pan could often extinguish one end of the match cord, and the remaining end could then be used to reignite the firing end of the cord upon reloading the matchlock musket. To prevent dragging the match cord on the wet ground, a linstock was often carried and used, it being a forked wood support inserted into the ground and used for holding the end of the match cord farthest removed from the matchlock.
Saint-Hilaire may refer to:
In everyday use and in kinematics, the speed of an object is the magnitude of its velocity (the rate of change of its position); it is thus a scalar quantity. The average speed of an object in an interval of time is the distance travelled by the object divided by the duration of the interval; the instantaneous speed is the limit of the average speed as the duration of the time interval approaches zero.
Like velocity, speed has the dimensions of a length divided by a time; the SI unit of speed is the metre per second, but the most common unit of speed in everyday usage is the kilometre per hour or, in the US and the UK, miles per hour. For air and marine travel the knot is commonly used.
The fastest possible speed at which energy or information can travel, according to special relativity, is the speed of light in a vacuum c = 7008299792458000000♠299792458 metres per second (approximately 7008299722222222222♠1079000000 km/h or 7008299963840000000♠671000000 mph). Matter cannot quite reach the speed of light, as this would require an infinite amount of energy. In relativity physics, the concept of rapidity replaces the classical idea of speed.

Experimenting with making an improvised slow match or coal extender. My thinking is mainly from a short-term survival perspective. if I had no good way to make fire (ie. ideal fire devices) and eventually got success using fire by friction (ie. bow drill), could I be mobile and carry fire when trying to improve my situation? Friction fire can be tricky and often not reliable. Having an additional improvised option in an unplanned situation would be beneficial. Especially, if the weather isn't cooperative (ie. rain, fog, humidity, etc...). The challenge with this concept is a fire has to already exist before it can be utilized. Slow matches were typically used on matchlock muskets several centuries ago (and apparently by re-enacters today). I stumbled across this historical concept and rev...

This is a macro sequence of a match burning in slow motion. It was shot @ 4000 FPS using a Phantom Miro 4 camera with a bellows mounted on the lens to get in to an extreme macro mode. As you can see this is an extremely tight shot. There was over 2000 watts of light within 4 inches (10 CM) of the match with mirrors and reflectors too. More here: http://www.pbnation.com/showthread.php?t=5019321 Houston Heat handed San Diego Dynasty their only loss in the prelims of the 2015 NXL World Cup, but each team won out and would face each other again in the finals on Sunday afternoon to see who would emerge the winner. This one game would decide the professional paintball World Cup title. Dynasty has been one of the best teams in the world for 15 years but have historically not done well at World Cup since the team joined the NXL professional division. The team has not won a professional World Cup since a controversial 10-man final all the way back in 2001. Oliver Lang would rejoin Dynasty to play with the team for the first time all year, but would his presence on and off the field be the difference the team needed to win the...
This is a fan edit of the 1966 Thunderbirds are Go movie. I decided to create this fan edit following my first viewing of the movie. Although I thought the movie had a good plot I found it had way too much padding which resulted in what I thought was a slow drawn out feature which didnt really match the excitement of the TV show. For this edit I have performed many changes, far too many to list here, so I encourage you to check it out and let me know what you think to the improved (?) feature as a whole. If you think some of the changes didnt work please comment and let me know.

With Mike Tyson enforcing from ring side, the WWF World Heavyweight Championship fight began with both superstars dancing around each other, engaging in a few light punches before Shawn Michaels escaped the ring and ran back in to take advantage of "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, but was met with a standing clothesline. Austin followed up by pulling down Michaels' trunks revealing his rear. Michaels tried to run at Austin but was flipped over the top rope into Triple H and Chyna. As Triple H threw Austin through the crowd barrier, the referee ordered him and Chyna to leave ringside but Austin followed and fought with them up to the entrance way. Michaels caught up with him and hit Austin with a cymbal from the band stage, before Irish whipping him into the dumpster. As the match resumed in the ...
