Ozzie Nelson

Oswald George "Ozzie" Nelson (March 20, 1906 – June 3, 1975) was an American band leader, actor, director, and producer. He originated and starred in The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, a radio and long-running television series with his wife Harriet and two sons David and Ricky Nelson.

Early life

The second son of George Waldemar and Ethel Irene (née Orr) Nelson, Nelson was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. His paternal grandparents were Swedish and his mother was of English descent. Nelson was raised in Ridgefield Park where he was active in Scouting, earning the rank of Eagle Scout at age 13. He played football at Ridgefield Park High School as well as during his college years at Rutgers University. He was a member of the Cap and Skull fraternity, and entered Rutgers School of Law–Newark. As a student he made pocket money playing saxophone in a band and coaching football. During the Depression, he turned to music as a full-time career.

Career

Music

Nelson started his entertainment career as a band leader. He formed and led the Ozzie Nelson Band, and had some initial limited success. He made his own "big break" in 1930. The New York Daily Mirror ran a poll of its readers to determine their favorite band. He knew that news vendors got credit from the newspaper for unsold copies by returning the front page and discarding the rest of the issue. Gathering hundreds of discarded newspapers, the band filled out ballots in their favor. They edged out Paul Whiteman and were pronounced the winners.

Meet Corliss Archer

Meet Corliss Archer, a program from radio's Golden Age, ran from January 7, 1943 to September 30, 1956. Although it was CBS's answer to NBC's popular A Date with Judy, it was also broadcast by NBC in 1948 as a summer replacement for The Bob Hope Show. From October 3, 1952 to June 26, 1953, it aired on ABC, finally returning to CBS. Despite the program's long run, fewer than 24 episodes are known to exist.

Characters and story

Priscilla Lyon and Janet Waldo successively portrayed 15-year-old Corliss on radio. Lugene Sanders also played Corliss briefly on radio and in the CBS version of the Meet Corliss Archer television show.

Perpetually perky, breathless and well-intentioned, Corliss is constantly at the side of her next-door neighbor and boyfriend, Dexter Franklin (Bill Christy, Sam Edwards). Clumsy, nerdy Dexter, a sweet but constant bungler with a nasal voice, is best remembered for his trademark phrase, "Holy cow!" and his braying call, "Heyyyy, Corrrrrliiiiiss!"--frequently delivered from the hedge separating their houses.

The Adventures

The Adventures were a Northern Irish rock band, formed in Belfast in 1984.

The band later moved to London where they signed to Chrysalis Records and released their first single in 1984. Following their debut album released a year later the group moved to Elektra Records and scored their biggest hit, "Broken Land". The song was written by guitarist Pat Gribben and reached number 20 in the UK Singles Chart, and was also the most played song on BBC Radio 1 in 1988.

The band were actively recording and touring from 1984 up until 1993, but despite the backing of Simon Fuller, the Adventures never achieved a significant commercial breakthrough. In recent years, the band have reformed to play low key live gigs and festivals in Belfast, although no further studio recordings have been made.

Background

Lead vocalist Terry Sharpe and guitarist Pat Gribben first worked together when in 1978 they joined punk band The Starjets. The band experienced limited success and disbanded in the early 1980s. Sharpe and Gribben then formed The Adventures in early 1984 with Gribben's wife, Eileen, Gerard Murphy, Tony Ayre and Paul Crowder, performing their first show in February 1984 in North London. They signed to Chrysalis Records and were taken on by upcoming manager, Simon Fuller, who saw them achieve much publicity and promotion in the music press, including an appearance on BBC's Crackerjack. Despite this promising start, their debut single, "Another Silent Day", released in the summer of 1984, barely scraped into the chart. Further singles were released, "Send My Heart", "Feel the Raindrops", and "Two Rivers", all of which were minor hits in the UK Chart, but no major breakthrough was achieved. Their debut album, Theodore and Friends, was released in 1985 while the group were on a world tour supporting Tears for Fears. It received much critical acclaim, but again no significant sales.

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet is an American sitcom, airing on ABC from October 3, 1952, through March 26, 1966, starring the real-life Nelson family. After a long run on radio, the show was brought to television, where it continued its success, initially running simultaneously on radio and television. For this piece, commissioned by Le Quartz, in Brest, and by Porto 2001 European Cultural Capital, Vera Mantero decided that she wanted to think together (one of her favourite activities!). She gathered several artists during one month in Brest, with the aim of thinking with them: the choreographers/performers Sabina Holzer, Litó Walkey, João Samões and Martin Nachbar, the writer-performer António Poppe, musician Boris Hauf and, in the field of the visual arts, Nadia Lauro and Helena Inverno. For four weeks the subjects turned around some of the following: how does energy appear? How does it appear in our lives? What makes us move in life, what is it that makes a human being get into movement? What is it that creates curiosity, what is the motor of curiosity? How to go through an existence that takes advantage of all of its potential? These nine artists had the desire of inhabiting, and making others inhabit, these other places of existence, less tangible, less linear, less functional, but equally necessary. Or actually more necessary, since its hard to find sense to our “functions” without inhabiting such places. Inhabiting those things, which seem inexplicable and indescribable through our daily language, but possible to say through these other languages that are in our body, in our perception, in the existence of all of us. They thought we need this practice of tuning in to these other languages, of emitting and perceiving what crosses us across them. In a process of one month they reflected upon, talked about, improvised over and observed thoroughly. They exchanged and created links between words, actions, movements, sounds, spaces or objects. A performance created by artists of different fields and which takes, successively or simultaneously, several forms: the concert, the reading, the choreography, the installation... and where the public will find its place likewise under different forms, be it in terms of space, time or perception. Jean-Michel Le Lez joined this group to work the lights of the performance, which concluded this whole path. Vera Mantero If they ask: of the arts of the world? Among the arts of the world I choose the one of seeing comets crushing down on the big masses of water: then, the hot coal over the nooks, marshes between them. I want in the darkness digged over by the lights to win baptism, skill. Burned on the edges of fire of the puddles. That is my name. And the days cross the nights until the other days, the nights fall into the days – and I study crumbled heavenly bodies, abundant sources, the secret. Η εντυπωσιακή αψίδα στην είσοδο του χώρου, με τα 1500 Red Naomi roses, δημιουργία της Elite Events Athens, ήταν ένα μοναδικό υπερθέαμα για τους καλεσμένους που δεν σταμάτησαν να φωτογραφίζονται όλη τη βραδιά από κάτω, ενω το τραπέζι ευχών με τα γλυκίσματα εντυπωσίασε με τις λεπτομέρειες από δαντέλα & τις αγγλικές κορδέλες που στόλιζαν τα ασημένια κηροπήγια και το βιβλίο ευχών! Το ενδιαφέρον μονοπώλησε τελικά το λαχταριστό σιντριβάνι σοκολάτας που μάζεψε γύρω του τους καλεσμένους που ήθελαν να γευτούν όλες τις λιχουδιές & συνωστίζονταν για τα marsh mallows και τα σου με παγωτό! Οι μικροί καλεσμένοι έπαιξαν με τους ζογκλέρ & τα ξωτικά animators της Elite Events Athens & έδωσαν την ευκαιρία στους μεγάλους να απολαύσουν το show από πυροτεχνήματα που «έντυσε» τον πρώτο χορό του ζευγαριού. Η νύφη έλαμπε φορώντας νυφική δημιουργία της Vera Wang & τα διάσημα Manolo Blahnik παπούτσια που πιο πολύ έργα τέχνης θύμιζαν & συμπλήρωναν το υπέροχο σύνολο! H Aria Γεύσεων απογείωσε την βραδιά με δημιουργίες υψηλής γαστρονομίας & όλοι μιλούσαν για την gourmet εμφάνιση των πιάτων, αλλά και τις μοναδικές γεύσεις που είχαν την ευκαιρία να δοκιμάσουν. Ένα αστείο περιστατικό που μας διηγήθηκε η wedding planner της Elite Events Athens, κυρία Τίνα Ξουράφη που συντόνιζε με την ομάδα της την ροή της τελετής στην εκκλησία, ήταν όταν εμφανίστηκε η νύφη χωρίς την μητέρα & την αδερφή της, οι οποίες ακολουθούσαν το αυτοκίνητο της νύφης, αλλά στον δρόμο.. άλλαξαν πορεία & έχασαν τον δρόμο για την εκκλησία! Τέλος καλό όλα καλά, μετά από λίγη ώρα που εμφανίστηκαν τελικά και έδωσαν τέλος στην αγωνία όλων που τις έψαχναν κατα την διάρκεια της τελετής! Στο προαύλιο της εκκλησίας είχαν στηθεί διακοσμημένα stands απο την Elite Events Athens με τα bride & groom biscuits και ζεστό gluhwein wine που ήταν ό,τι έπρεπε για να ζεστάνει τους καλεσμένους που υπέμειναν το κρύο προκειμένου να θαυμάσουν το όμορφο ζευγάρι!
