Marilyn sings If I Could Reach You -- live in concert for WLIW's "SRO" special on PBS. A BIG THANK YOU to Jerry in Brooklyn for sending this McCoo-fan a copy. This Fifth Dimension song was recorded on the album, "Individually & Collectively" back in the early 70's. How amazing to hear this live version recorded nearly 20 years later in the late 80's...! Hope my fellow McCoo fans enjoy it!

Both movie and single were released in 1981, and the song was a huge hit for Sheena Easton. Marilyn McCoo (born September 30, 1943) is an American singer, actress, and television presenter, who is best known for being the lead female vocalist in the group The 5th Dimension, as well as hosting the 1980s music countdown series Solid Gold. Since 1969 she has been married to singer Billy Davis, Jr., the founder and co-member of The 5th Dimension.
McCoo was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to Waymon and Mary McCoo, who were both doctors. At the age of seven, she moved with her parents, two sisters, and brother to Los Angeles, where she commenced singing, piano and dance lessons. At the age of 15, she joined Art Linkletter's Talent Show and began modelling. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in UCLA, where she earned a degree in business administration. In 1962, McCoo entered the Miss Bronze California beauty pageant where she came in first place. At this event, she met Lamonte McLemore, a part-time vocalist and photographer for Jet magazine. Her photos, taken by McLemore, were featured in the magazine's Jet Beauty of the Week section.

"Hey, Thieving Man. Ain't a believing man; he's a deceiving man, who'll steal your heart away." Alexander Mundy... one of my all-time favorites!
It Takes a Thief's Alexander Mundy [RJ Wagner], master thief working as a spy for the US government [ 'Let me get this straight, you want me to steal?'], finds himself caught up in solving the mystery of the disappearance of a close friend, Marilyn Lee [Marilyn McCoo] who disappears and apparently dies in a plane crash, leaving her singing mates [The 5th Dimension], and Mundy, heartbroken and in disbelief.
Mundy's job now is to protect the visiting foreign president from the same country Marilyn and her singing mates had just toured prior to the plane crash. Mundy's job on that prior assignment was to act as a bodyguard and protect the group, particularly Marilyn, from a potential blackmail situation [this episode has an interesting 'The Bodyguard' vibe to it, with Wagner-McCoo in the Costner-Houston roles]. As Mundy soon finds out, there is more to this mystery than meets the eye.
This clip from the episode, "Sing a Song of Murder" [episode 3.20] first broadcast on ABC on February 23, 1970, is Mundy and Marilyn's attempt to solve the caper and stop the assassination of the visiting foreign president, an assassination that is somehow connected to the recording of the song 'One Less Bell to Answer'. The Burt Bacharach/Hal David haunting song is featured prominently [the television premiere of the song] in this episode, as is Neil Sedaka's really cool 'Puppet Man' [Raise your finger and I'll perform, I'll crackerjack til the crack of dawn; if you wanna see me do my thing, pull my string.] Both songs were featured and became hit singles on the 5th Dimension album 'Portrait' during the summer and fall of 1970 into 1971.
'Puppet Man' is featured prominently throughout this episode including the opening scene that has to be one of the most complicated scenes ever filmed for a tv series [ kudos to director Barry Shear] : a funeral at a large cemetery in the pouring rain, procession of cars and hearses, mourners and reporters everywhere, and 'Puppet Man' blasting out over the tape-deck loud speaker as a forlorn Al Mundy and stunned 5th Dimension walk through the pouring rain... incredible scene.
This 'Thief' episode is my favorite from this cool series - it featured great music, a good mystery plot, and the entire 5th Dimension [one of my all-time favorite groups] - Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr, Florence LaRue, Ron Townson and Lamonte McLemore. In fact, their manager Marc Gordon and producer Bones Howe are also featured in this episode. As fans know, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr were married in 1969 ['Wedding Bell Blues' inspired, or vice-versa?], as were Florence LaRue and Marc Gordon.
There is a fantastic compilation album/CD of The 5th Dimension's greatest hits that is out in stores and online now - 'Ultimate 5th - The 5th Dimension.' A must have. The single 'One Less Bell to Answer' is also available via Amazon, Google Play and iTunes.

A final interesting bit of information about this episode - the song 'One Less Bell To Answer' was inspired by none other than Angie Dickinson. In the late '60s, husband and wife Burt Bacharach and Angie Dickinson hosted a dinner party, in which the Hal Davids attended amongst many other couples. David was thinking about a song he was working on, and watched Dickinson from afar as she went about the house, busy getting dinner organized, greeting guests, chatting with couples and answering the door as more guests arrived. It Takes a Thief's Alexander Mundy [RJ Wagner], master thief working as a spy for the US government [ 'Let me get this straight, you want me to steal?'], finds himself caught up in solving the mystery of the disappearance of a close friend, Marilyn Lee [Marilyn McCoo] who disappears and apparently dies in a plane crash, leaving her singing mates [The 5th Dimension], and Mundy, heartbroken and in disbelief.
Mundy's job now is to protect the visiting foreign president from the same country Marilyn and her singing mates had just toured prior to the plane crash. Mundy's job on that prior assignment was to act as a bodyguard and protect the group, particularly Marilyn, from a potential blackmail situation [this episode has an interesting 'The Bodyguard' vibe to it, with Wagner-McCoo in the Costner-Houston roles]. As Mundy soon finds out, there is more to this mystery than meets the eye.
This clip from the episode, "Sing a Song of Murder" [episode 3.20] first broadcast on ABC on February 23, 1970, is Mundy and Marilyn's attempt to solve the caper and stop the assassination of the visiting foreign president, an assassination that is somehow connected to the recording of the song 'One Less Bell to Answer'. The Burt Bacharach/Hal David haunting song is featured prominently [the television premiere of the song] in this episode, as is Neil Sedaka's really cool 'Puppet Man' [Raise your finger and I'll perform, I'll crackerjack til the crack of dawn; if you wanna see me do my thing, pull my string.] Both songs were featured and became hit singles on the 5th Dimension album 'Portrait' during the summer and fall of 1970 into 1971.
'Puppet Man' is featured prominently throughout this episode including the opening scene that has to be one of the most complicated scenes ever filmed for a tv series [ kudos to director Barry Shear] : a funeral at a large cemetery in the pouring rain, procession of cars and hearses, mourners and reporters everywhere, and 'Puppet Man' blasting out over the tape-deck loud speaker as a forlorn Al Mundy and stunned 5th Dimension walk through the pouring rain... incredible scene.
This 'Thief' episode is my favorite from this cool series - it featured great music, a good mystery plot, and the entire 5th Dimension [one of my all-time favorite groups] - Marilyn McCoo, Billy Davis Jr, Florence LaRue, Ron Townson and Lamonte McLemore. In fact, their manager Marc Gordon and producer Bones Howe are also featured in this episode. As fans know, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr were married in 1969 ['Wedding Bell Blues' inspired, or vice-versa?], as were Florence LaRue and Marc Gordon.
There is a fantastic compilation album/CD of The 5th Dimension's greatest hits that is out in stores and online now - 'Ultimate 5th - The 5th Dimension.' A must have. The single 'One Less Bell to Answer' is also available via Amazon, Google Play and iTunes.

A final interesting bit of information about this episode - the song 'One Less Bell To Answer' was inspired by none other than Angie Dickinson. In the late '60s, husband and wife Burt Bacharach and Angie Dickinson hosted a dinner party, in which the Hal Davids attended amongst many other couples. David was thinking about a song he was working on, and watched Dickinson from afar as she went about the house, busy getting dinner organized, greeting guests, chatting with couples and answering the door as more guests arrived. Their first work appeared on the Soul City label, which was started by Imperial Records/United Artists Records recording artist Johnny Rivers. The group would later record for Bell/Arista Records, ABC Records, and Motown Records.
Some of the songwriters popularized by The 5th Dimension went on to careers of their own, especially Ashford & Simpson, who wrote "California Soul". The group is also notable for having more success with the songs of Laura Nyro than Nyro did herself, particularly with "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Sweet Blindness" and "Wedding Bell Blues".

-Robert: Do you remember anything about the recording of the song, Marilyn?
-Marilyn: I just remember that I really liked the song, and may I add that I'm truly having a "wow moment" at the fans' comments about your YouTube of it today, I'm just so touched. While recording it, I was trying to decide how simple to keep it, or to try to do something bigger with it...but it just seemed like with the movie being what it was, that simplicity was what it required. Sometimes you're a piece of the puzzle, and you want to take your part and fit it into the total piece...so you make a choice...
-Robert: How ingenious that finesse is what gives this particular interpretation such grandeur and such a powerful, overwhelming listener response as a result.
-Marilyn: (Producer) Bones Howe used to talk to me about that, sometimes we'd start working on a song with The 5th Dimension and he'd say, "Keep the lines simple, keep it simple!" and he and I used to struggle with that in the studio because sometimes I'd want to do more with the melody. And when I was recording "I'm On Your Side," I thought about Bones.

-Robert: Do you remember anything about the recording of the song, Marilyn?
-Marilyn: I just remember that I really liked the song, and may I add that I'm truly having a "wow moment" at the fans' comments about your YouTube of it today, I'm just so touched. While recording it, I was trying to decide how simple to keep it, or to try to do something bigger with it...but it just seemed like with the movie being what it was, that simplicity was what it required. Sometimes you're a piece of the puzzle, and you want to take your part and fit it into the total piece...so you make a choice...
-Robert: How ingenious that finesse is what gives this particular interpretation such grandeur and such a powerful, overwhelming listener response as a result.
-Marilyn: (Producer) Bones Howe used to talk to me about that, sometimes we'd start working on a song with The 5th Dimension and he'd say, "Keep the lines simple, keep it simple!" and he and I used to struggle with that in the studio because sometimes I'd want to do more with the melody. And when I was recording "I'm On Your Side," I thought about Bones.

Marilyn: "It sounds like very big shoes and I don't know if we can fill them (laughs). We're touched that you, Robert and that others feel that way...we're just (sighs)..."
Billy: "I have to be honest with you, as far as people see us and treat us, it feels good. You feel like you're accomplishing the things that you've come here to do, but we quickly say for them to not give us the glory, but to give God the glory because he works through us and so we don't receive anything, we've already been blessed to be part of His body. It gives us the drive to go on, because it lets us know what we're doing in Christ is effective. That is the gift."
And so it went in our delightfully intensive 2 days of Q & A, Marilyn & Billy portraying an authentic humbleness yet unadulterated joy in recounting their musical and life history, their creative collaborations old and new, their continuing to make their special brand of sizzling yet smooth Pop-Soul on recordings, on stages around the world, from Manila to the States to the upcoming "Soulicious" tour this October in England. We haven't thought about it in years!"
