John Herndon "Johnny" Mercer (November 18, 1909 – June 25, 1976) was an American lyricist, songwriter and singer. He was also the founder of Capitol Records.
He is best known as a lyricist, but he also composed music. He was also a popular singer who recorded his own songs as well as those written by others. From the mid-1930s through the mid-1950s, many of the songs Mercer wrote and performed were among the most popular hits of the time. He wrote the lyrics to more than fifteen hundred songs, including compositions for movies and Broadway shows. He received nineteen Academy Award nominations, and won four Best Original Song Oscars.
Mercer was born in Savannah, Georgia. His father, George Anderson Mercer, was a prominent attorney and real estate developer, and his mother, Lillian Elizabeth (née Ciucevich), George Mercer’s secretary and then second wife, was the daughter of a Croatian immigrant father and a mother with Irish ancestry. Lillian's father was a merchant seaman who ran the Union blockade during the U.S. Civil War. Mercer was George's fourth son, first by Lillian. His great-grandfather was Confederate General Hugh Weedon Mercer and he was a direct descendant of American Revolutionary War General Hugh Mercer, a Scottish soldier-physician who died at the Battle of Princeton. Mercer was also a distant cousin of General George S. Patton. The construction of Mercer House in Savannah was started by General Hugh Weedon Mercer in 1860 (although never finished by him; the next owners of the house finished it), later the home of Jim Williams, whose trial for murder was the centerpiece of John Berendt's book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Neither the General, nor Mercer himself, ever lived there.

Bobby Darin (born Walden Robert Cassotto; May 14, 1936 – December 20, 1973) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and actor of film and television. He performed in a range of music genres, including jazz, pop, rock'n'roll, folk, swing and country.
He started as a songwriter for Connie Francis, and recorded his own first million-seller "Splish Splash" in 1958. This was followed by "Dream Lover," "Mack the Knife," and "Beyond the Sea," which brought him world fame. In 1962, he won a Golden Globe Award for his first film Come September, co-starring his first wife, Sandra Dee.
Throughout the 1960s, he became more politically active and worked on Robert F. Kennedy's Democratic presidential campaign. He was present on the night of June 4/5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles at the time of Kennedy's assassination. The same year, he discovered that he had been brought up by his grandmother, not his mother, and that the girl he had thought to be his sister was actually his mother. These events deeply affected Darin and sent him into a long period of seclusion.

This is an alternate performance of Ace In The Hole from a Darin Las Vegas performance in 1963. Somewhat different to the officially released version. As some of you know, my previous account was suspended due to some sinatra tracks, but I am back and will get stuff back up as soon as I can.
Ace In The Hole, Words by James Dempsey and Music by George Mitchell A musical hit of 1909, this song continued to find new popularity through the years. In 1926, it was featured in the Broadway show "Lulu Belle," the tale of a saloon singer who makes it to Broadway. The film version, in 1948, starred Dorothy Lamour in the title role, with George Montgomery and Otto Kruger A Jazz Dixieland style of song was done by Bunk Johnson. He was a prominent early New Orleans jazz trumpet player in the early years and was regarded as the top trumpeter in New Orleans in the years 1905–1915. His on and off career was to 1943. Louis Armstrong said he used to admire Bunk Johnson. Others who also recored the song include but not limited to: Al Katz, Maxine Sullivan, Lonnie Donegan Bobby Darin, Johnn...
This is my favourite song from the 1961 album 'Two of a Kind'. Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer were clearly having such a good time when they recorded it that their enthusiasm is infectious. It hardly seems possible that Johnny was 27 years older than Bobby, so close the rapport between them is. By the way, the Omar Khayyam mentioned in the lyrics was a Persian mathematician, philosopher and poet of the Middle Ages whose surname means 'tent maker'.

ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE ~ Johnny Mercer & The Pied Pipers (1945) (live recording). Words by: Johnny Mercer - Music by: Harold Arlen - copyright: 1944 Though Johnny Mercer & The Pied Pipers did a studio version of this song in 1945 on the Capitol Records label, located in Hollywood, this is a live version recorded sometime in the same year. Johnny Mercer wrote ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE, as well as, several other songs, many of which, became hits of the day. He was an excellent singer , with a vocal style similar to that of Woody Herman or Tex Beneke. The term "Accentuate-The-Positive" had long been a term used in sermons by Baptist preachers, and possibly other ministers of other Christian sects, for many years prior to Mercer's song being recorded. It is long believed that Johnny Mercer e...

You'd be so nice by the fire
Where the breeze that's it sneak in on high sing a lullaby
You'd be all that I could desire.
Under stars chilled by the winter
Under an August moon burnin' above
You'd be so nice, you'd be paradise
To come home to and love.
You'd be ever so nice to park shoes by the fire
While the breeze on high chants a lullaby
You'd be all that I could desire.
And under stars chilled by the wintertime
Under an August moon burnin' above
You'd be so nice, you'd be a lot more than paradise
To come home to and love.
And love
And love
Let's make love.
