Mayday, also known as Air Crash Investigation(s) in Australia, South Africa, Asia and some European countries, and Air Emergency and Air Disasters in the United States, is a Canadian documentary television program produced by Cineflix investigating air crashes, near-crashes, hijackings, bombings and other disasters. Mayday uses re-enactments and computer-generated imagery to reconstruct for its audiences the sequence of events leading up to each disaster. In addition, aviation experts, retired pilots and crash investigators are interviewed explaining how these emergencies came about, how they were investigated and how they could have been prevented.
Cineflix started production on 13 August 2002, with a CDN$2.5 million budget. Cineflix secured deals with France 5, the Discovery Channel, Canal D, TVNZ, the Seven Network, the Holland Media Group and the National Geographic Channel, to take Mayday to 144 countries and 26 languages. The series was received well by critics and nominated for a number of awards. Sharon Zupancic won a Gemini Award for her work on the Mayday episode, "Lockerbie Disaster". A UNSW senior lecturer, Raymond Lewis, conducted a study on teaching strategy loosely based on the series. Lewis's results indicated using the strategy had "a positive effect on learning outcomes."

La Légende d'Eer (1977-1978) was composed when Iannis Xenakis was in the midst of his far-reaching explorations of mythology and philosophy. Variously inspired by Plato's myth of Er in The Republic, Pascal's Pensées, and even an article on supernovas in Scientific American, this piece transcends programmatic considerations and presents a strange, roiling soundscape that dwarfs Xenakis' earlier electro-acoustic efforts in scope and imagination. This astonishing piece begins with an extended passage of penetrating, shrill tones that break up into unevenly staggered and twittering pulses. These gradually widen into thick bands of gliding microtonal clusters and bulging intrusions of processed noise, harsh percussive attacks, and throbbing ostinati that grow in density and intensity, only to thin out by the end in distant, glassy pitches similar to the opening. The cumulative effect is similar to the immense roar of Xenakis' Bohor (1962), a shimmering congeries of metallic and rumbling tones that, for its time, seemed the ultimate expression of cosmic vastness and chaos.

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society will host a public Google Hangout February 22 on how to engage more African Americans in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Panelists include Ashanti Johnson and Melanie Harrison Okoro, who wrote an article published in the March-April 2016 issue of American Scientist titled "How to Recruit and Retain Underrepresented Minorities." The article focuses on what works to engage aspiring minority researchers in studying ocean science. http://www.americanscientist.org/issues/pub/how-to-recruit-and-retain-underrepresented-minorities
The panel will also include Danielle Lee, a 2015 TED fellow and White House Champion of Change. Her science outreach efforts emphasize sharing science to general audiences, particularly under-served groups, via outdoor programming and social media. Her work includes The Urban Scientist, a blog about urban ecology, evolutionary biology and diversity in the sciences, hosted by Scientific American Blog Network.

What's driving the digital revolution in education? And will it be a boon for students, helping the U.S. stay competitive in a global economy, as advocates say? Or, as critics fret, will it improve little on what teachers can do already—and threaten student privacy to boot?
In the "Executive Summit: Learning in the Digital Age," sponsored by Scientific American and Macmillan Science & Education and held at Google's New York City offices, leaders from the fields of education, science, policy and business came together to engage on the issues.
Attendees included Peter Norvig from Google, Sujeet Rao from the U.S Department of Education, Alan Alda and many more.
--
Part 2 concludes the break-out session on the "Rethinking Education" panel.
Then Mariette DiChristina, editor in chief of Scientific American, has a conversation with David L. Evans, executive director of the National Science Teachers Association, on the teachers' perspective. Elizabeth Stage, director of the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California, Berkeley, and Mariette then discuss the student "ecosystem" of science outside of formal learning programs.
Last in this part is a second panel, "Going Digital: Hype and Hope," with M. Mitchell Waldrop, a features editor at the journal Nature, moderating the speakers Mike Berlin, director of Strategic Initiatives, Macmillan New Ventures; Jose Ferreira, CEO, Knewton; Peter Norvig, director of research, Google; Sujeet Rao, special assistant, U.S. Department of Education.
