Maximum Rocknroll #395 • Apr 2016

mrr_395_cvr

It is time for Maximum Rocknroll #395, the April 2016 issue! It’s another loaded issue of DIY punk’s greatest monthly mag. We hope you’re ready; we’ve got interviews with some of the most exciting bands in the contemporary punk landscape. Chicago’s NEGATIVE SCANNER talk about DIY in their hometown, their songwriting process, their still-expanding musical vocabulary and touring the US in a “soccer mom van”. Philly’s SOUL GLO and Temecula’s the COLTRANES dish on their respective brands of weirdo hardcore punk, and Brazil’s the PESSIMISTS explain their musical approach, their upcoming tour plans and their origins in a São Paulo headshop.

This issue also features a huge special on three of this year’s most promising punk fests, giving us an opportunity to sit down with some of the most organized, energized, creative and resourceful punks out there. “Anti” Christian of Oakland’s Manic Relapse explains how he pulled their insane lineup of domestic and international bands and talks about carving out an inviting space while managing the fest’s hard-partying reputation. Everything is Not OK organizer Roz Adams paints a portrait of the punk artist as a young man and shows where the Oklahoma City fest falls in a continually inspirational landscape of artists and musicians. Lastly Chris Moore and Nick Tape, the folks behind Damaged City, map out DC’s legacy as both an American metropolis with a long history in hardcore punk and as a place where creating punk and expanding the scope of a fest takes constant work and commitment.

On the global media front, we were able to speak with the filmmakers of the upcoming three-part documentary series Bogotá Punk. Last but not least: an uncompromising interview with Berlin/Munich’s HeartFirst Records conducted by the late Filip Fuchs. Of course, we know not even all this is enough for you: this also comes with hundreds of reviews, a photo spread by Martin Sorrondeguy, all your favorite columnists (Turbo & Gang are taking their Oi! column in an exciting new direction) and the long-awaited return of the classifieds section. It’s no joke.

New Blood! RADIATION RISKS, ULTRA GASH, and ANNIHILITIA

March 3rd, 2016 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
RADIATION RISKS

Date & location formed:
December 2015, Buffalo NY.

Reason for forming: Radiation Risks cover
Nicky mentioned the idea to John one night when we were very drunk, and bad ideas grow out of drunkenness like mushrooms out of shit. Biffy (whom you may know from Al Quint’s column as “The Ubiquitous Biff Bifaro”) is never one to turn down a bad idea, so he was obviously on board. Plus, he had already been in every other band ever, so he was totally out of options. Steve, our sax-man, may have thought we said “funk” not “punk.” And we rounded out the lineup by telling Mike D that this was actually a cooking position at very high end restaurant. It all worked out fine though.

What are your lyrics about?
We sing about shades of colors, directions, lipstick, purses, spiders, sleeping, real estate, Oreos, doing drugs, getting around, other people’s prayers, and new age funny stuff. You know, the usual.

How would you describe your sound?
It’s dummy punk for bizzaro idiots. It’s total ham-handed Geza X worship made by a bunch of mutant long hairs. You like Dangerhouse? You might like this nonsense.

What’s in the future for this band?
We came from the future, so chances are we’ll return to 2016 at some point down the line.

Band name:
ULTRA GASH Ultra Gash Logo

Date & location formed:
March 2015, Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Reason for forming:
We hated our lives. The lead singer had a chronic masturbation problem so we put a bass guitar in his grubby hands.

What are your lyrics about?
City psychos, scum bags, outstretched minds, perverts, teenage chemists, mufflers with holes,
boards with nails in them and gatorade.

How would you describe your sound?
Rock n roll flash with a bad rash.

What’s in the future for this band?
Spreading like the plague (more jam than peanut butter).

Band name:
ANNIHILITIA a0693189515_10

Date & location formed:
Early 2015, Singapore.

Reason for forming:
Ariff(vocalist/guitarist) was the one who rounded everyone up. We all had an interest in trying something a little different musically.. so it worked out quite well.

What are your lyrics about?
Reflections on the past and present, suggestions (based on patterns) about the future.

How would you describe your sound?
Groove punk.

What’s in the future for this band?
We just released a small round of demo CDs. Working on new material before we see where that takes us.

New Blood! STRUTTER, LA EQUI, and DAUÐYFLIN

February 25th, 2016 by

“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
StrutterArt

Date & location formed:
February 2015, Austin, Tx

Reason for forming:
Our drummer Sam from is Montreal and was visiting (basically living in) Austin and wanted to practice drums to keep from getting rusty so we all got together to mess around. We needed up writing a song that made my big toe shoot up in my boot so we just kept crankin out the hits. After 6 1/2 weeks we recorded 11 songs and I busted a hole through my boot.

What are your lyrics about?
Privilege. Being self aware of that privilege. Recognizing power. Questioning your place in punk. Questioning your place in the world. Feeling helpless. Being apathetic. Being a hypocrite. All types of relatable shit.

Strutter_Steven Ruud Photography_2-18-16_5

Strutter (photo by Steven Ruud)

How would you describe your sound?
That first cool refreshing sip of a freshly cracked ice cold Sprite. And also Bowser the dog biting your hand.

What’s in the future for this band?
We just released a 7″ on Beach Impediment which will also come out on Static Shock Records in the U.K. sometime in the spring. We plan to continue recording once Sam (Drummer) comes back from Australia. He won’t stop Fucking moving. We still play shows in Austin occasionally with Mike from Impalers.

Links and contact info:

strutter.bandcamp.com

barbed-wire-500x12

Band name:
IMG_2697 (Pronounced “Lah Eh-key”)

Date & location formed:
We formed around the spring of 2015 and our first show was at a new blood showcase in Los Angeles (E7th warehouse) with bands such as ausencia, strangers fumigados red tape and roach clips in may 2015.

Reason for forming:
All members were in band el estorbo but had to sever ties due to lack of dedication of two other members so we decided to take on a new stlye as a three piece( fusion of hardcore raw melodic punk at times) with Bubba on the drums Milo on bass Davey on guitar w the split vocals with milo respectively.

What are your lyrics about?
Lyrics are collection of fictional and non fictional stories based on war, veterans, vices, schizophrenia, or fixation of police state. Also the last tape and future 7in are cowboy desperado themed or related in that Wild West anything goes type of setting.

IMG_5991

How would you describe your sound?
Heavily influenced by raw melodic sounding hardcore with a Dbeat swing to it. Think spaniard hardcore 80s punk for vocals And riffs

What’s in the future for this band?
We’ve taken out one basement tape with AgitProp, two Demo tapes on our own label (Ruidos Subterraneo) and we are currently putting together 8 songs for a future 7in and a tape release with whatever doesn’t make it to the 7in. We’ve gotten to play NYCs latino punk fest, AZs desert destroyer and various trips along the california scene from bakersfield oakland redlands and all over the LA and Orange county.

DaudyflinLogoBand name:
Dauðyflin

Date & location formed:
Fall of 2015 in Reykjavík.

Reason for forming:
Three of us have another band, Börn, which had to take a break. Also Reykjavík had no pogo friendly bands.

What are your lyrics about?
Hatred. Daydreams of physically smashing the patriarchy. Pretending we’re tough enough to beat the shit out of fencewalkers.

How would you describe your sound?
Dark hardcore punk pogo party music.

What’s in the future for this band?
Our tape will be out in a few weeks. Then hopefully we’ll do a 7″ or something in the summer plus some shows in mainland Europe.
