Jan Gehl, Professor of Urban Design at the School of Architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and founding partner of Gehl Architects - Urban Quality Consultants, gave insightful talk at the Opening Plenary of the EFC AGA and Conference in Copenhagen on 31 May. After screening his short film, "The Human Scale", which showed a global panorama of cities, the challenges they face, and some solutions, Mr Gehl shared his view of the importance of the good city for the cities today and for the future.
His main point was that the best thing foundations can do is to change mindsets of people who can then go and make change in their local environments. He gave the example of New York City, where he helped to change city planners' ways of thinking when it came to making cities people friendly. Various stakeholders in New York City then went on to transform key locations, such as Times Square, into places meant for people, rather than cars.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
Jason explains the concept of “shareable cities”, where citizens work together to crowd source goods, services, funding, transportation, money, knowledge, and more. He argues how access to transparent and open data will enable greater innovation since members of the community can leverage shared data sets on transportation, healthcare, and infrastructure, to build products and services that serve the public good.
Jason Hsu is an educator, design thinker, storyteller and most of all a learner of Nature. Starting out as a journalist for Taiwan News, Jason developed a curious mind for humanity. His desire to explore brought him to travel across Central and South America in search of a Che Guevara-like revolution. He spent time in Xi’an, China helping investigate and research water resource consumption under UNESCO.
In 2008, he co-founded The Big Question Conference as a way to facilitate, build conversation and network among the youth in Asia. What began as a conference turned into a social innovation hub that draws a variety of creative talents and entrepreneurial minds to collaborate. He also co-founded TEDxTaipei in 2009 and has been serving as TEDx Ambassador since 2010.
Jason’s most recent endeavour was the founding of Shareable Cities, a venture established with the aim to explore sharing economy business models. Jason is passionate about open data, collaborative working as well as mutualism theories espoused by the beehive. He is a runner and an avid lover of mountain climbing.

Encroachments, flouting of rules that help put up illegal structures and the general disregard for urban planning. A disregard that has led to problems ranging from traffic jams and flooding to gradual unemployment and income disparities. Given the scale of urbanisation, India seems to have a lower number of urban planners than are required. According to the urban development ministry there are just 5000 urban planners in the country. Clearly - there is opportunity to disrupt. On this episode of Heads Up we take a look at youngsters doing just that, and the road to becoming an urban planner.

Cities Skylines Urban Planning ► The Urban jungle. An organized American-style district, with New York/European architecture and Japanese zoning. Simple, no? I wanted to make a short episode, I swear… Another failure … I’m really going to try to focus on a small part the next time (I say that but…). I have full of idea for my future videos. I'm impatient to make them (as usual), but I have very little.

Cities in the Balance: Creating the Transit- Friendly Environment
Contrasting modern suburban development with older, urban neighborhoods, this video depicts the relationship between transit and land use, and illustrates land use mitigations to make transit an attractive alternative to the automobile. Neo-traditional planning, transit- oriented design, and modest retrofits of existing suburbs are shown. The main thesis of the video is that our dependence on the automobile is the direct result of how we build our cities.

Metro Vancouver has been noted for its ability to accommodate growth while maintaining good quality of life for residents. Still, the region faces challenges in pursuing the goals of the recently-approved Regional Growth Strategy, which helps ensure that regional land use patterns help create vibrant, accessible communities and support transit, walking, and cycling throughout the region.
Melbourne is considered one of the most livable cities in the world. It has garnered considerable recognition for its success over the last 25 years in transforming the centre of Melbourne from a car-oriented office core to a dynamic, mixed-use community with a vibrant public realm.
In this public lecture, which took place on October 4, 2011, at Simon Fraser University's Vancouver campus, Rob Adams, the director of city design for Melbourne, shared some of his experiences in leading this transformation. He also discussed how Melbourne's success could be applied to development in Metro Vancouver's key centres.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Charles Montgomery explores what happens when you take an abandon city space in NYC and populate it with urban social experiments. The outcomes are unexpected as city dwellers explore this public space, interact with each other, and change their attitudes towards social connections, values, and each other.
Charles Montgomery explores what happens when you take an abandoned NYC space and infuse it with social experiments. The results are surprising and inspiring.
An award-winning author and urban experimentalist, Charles Montgomery is the author of Happy City which the New York Times recommended as essential reading for their city’s new mayor. Working with the BMW Guggenheim Lab, the Museum of Vancouver and other institutions, he creates experiments that challenge us to see our cities—and ourselves—in entirely new ways.
Montgomery’s Home for the Games initiative led hundreds of people to open their homes to strangers during the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. Operating in cooperation with the BMW Guggenheim Lab and the citizens of New York City, he transformed an empty lot into a device to maximize feelings of altruism.
His writings on urban planning, psychology, culture, and history have appeared in magazines and journals on three continents. Among his awards is a Citation of Merit from the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society for outstanding contribution towards public understanding of climate change science. His first book, The Last Heathen, won the 2005 Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-fiction.
He currently creates programs with the Museum of Vancouver and other institutions that enable people to use their own cities as laboratories, and he continues to advise and conduct lectures for planners, designers, and decision-makers across America, Canada, and England. Despite Albany's prominence as the state capital of New York, over the years, large swaths of the city's urban core have been either destroyed or in decline.
Earlier this year, for the first time in the city's 400 year history, it adopted a comprehensive urban plan, aimed at turning things around.
It outlines ways to improve everything from public transportation, to education, and affordable housing over the next 20 years.
