Sylvia Miles is an American film, stage and television actress, twice nominated for an Academy Award.
Miles was born in New York City and raised in Greenwich Village, where her father worked as a furniture maker. Her birth year has been generally reported as 1923, but Miles insists she was born in 1934.
Miles played the role of "Sally" in the pilot episode of what would become The Dick Van Dyke Show, which was later taken by Rose Marie for the series. She appeared in two episodes of Naked City, including once as a lovely barfly attempting to communicate with a psychotic Jack Warden.
One of Miles' best-known roles was in Midnight Cowboy as a well-to-do middle-aged New Yorker who invites Joe Buck (Jon Voight) up to her penthouse apartment for sex. The role earned her an Oscar nomination in 1969 for Best Supporting Actress, despite only appearing on screen for about six minutes. She received a second Oscar nomination for her slightly larger role (eight minutes) as Best Supporting Actress in 1975 for her role in Farewell, My Lovely.
A naive hustler goes to New York to seek personal fortune but in the process finds himself a new friend, a con man. The two then together try to survive on the tough streets of New York.

I've always been intrigued by this lady who walks the red carpets....this time at the True Grit red carpet in New York I chatted with her. Sylvia Miles was a star in the late 60's. She has a fair opinion on things.

Excerpt from the romantic light comedy, Crossing Delancey which stars dreamer and pretender, Izzy (Isabelle Grossman played by actress, Amy Irving). This is the scene that really starts it all! Izzy sits with her grandmother, Bubbie (Reizl Bozyk), one fine day in the park when she finds out that Bubbie hired a schatz hunter, a marriage broker, Hannah Mandelbaum (Sylvia Miles). Favorite Quotes: Basically the whole dialog between Bubbie and Hannah. Hilarious! Notes of Interest: Reizl Bozyk Reizl Bozyk was a star on the Yiddish stage, performing in hundreds of productions in the US, and earlier in Poland and Argentina. Nelson adored Sylvia Miles and together they had many wonderful adventures all over Manhattan. On this occasion, Nelson had travelled with Brant Mewborn, a senior editor at "Rolling Stone" and his wife Rhonda to Woodstock to see Sylvia's new country home. Sylvia was also there to appear in a summer theater production, and this video was made on the way to dropping Sylvia off at the theater for a performance that night. Brant was a terrible driver.
