Amnesty International has published satellite imagery and new testimony that shed light on the horrific conditions in North Korea's network of political prison camps, which hold an estimated 200,000 people.
The images reveal the location, size and conditions inside the camps. Amnesty International spoke to a number of people, including former inmates from the political prison camp at Yodok as well as guards in other political prison camps, to obtain information about life in the camps.
According to former detainees at the political prison camp at Yodok, prisoners are forced to work in conditions approaching slavery and are frequently subjected to torture and other cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment. All the detainees at Yodok have witnessed public executions.
"North Korea can no longer deny the undeniable. For decades the authorities have refused to admit to the existence of mass political prison camps," said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International Asia Pacific Director.

Great Unity between Service Personnel and People Displayed in Recovering from Flood Damage
Pyongyang, August 9 (KCNA) -- The great unity between service personnel and people was fully displayed in Kaechon City, South Phyongan Province to recover from the recent flood damage in the country.
The downpour and heavy rain hit the west coastal area of the country, causing the landslide. It destroyed Joyang Coal Mine Station and Kaechon-Joyang railway section.
Downpour in Kaechon area destroyed the bank in the ravine north of Joyang Coal Mine Station, leaving stones and mud nearly three meters in thickness piled up in the 250 m-long area of the station.
It also left equipment and freight wagons around the station yard and the nearby area buried under silt or overturned and rails bent.
The dear respected Kim Jong Un acquainted himself in detail with the flood damage and issued an order to the Korean People's Army to finish the recovery operation in the shortest possible time.
In hearty response to the order of the Supreme Commander, KPA soldiers arrived at the spot through a forced march over the night. They started their operation at the dawn of August 7 before putting up tents. They made a breakthrough in the operation.
A high-pitched operation went on non-stop, which resulted in carrying out 50 percent of the total quota in the first day of the operation.
Generals and other commanding officers and soldiers worked hard to eradicate the aftermath.
Military families provided soldiers with meals. They joined the service personnel, encouraging them in their operation.
It was completed in a matter of just over 50 hours after the start of the work. They succeeded in clearing muck, leveling the low ground with at least 100 000 cubic meters of earth and sand and readjusting roadbed, putting the freight transport to normal.
Beautiful traits of the unity between service personnel and people were fully displayed in the work site.
Soldiers of the People's Army discussed measures to help people in their living despite huge tasks before them.
They visited flood-stricken families with relief materials and consoled them.
They, at the same time, rebuilt dykes in such a way that they would not be affected by another flood and pushed forward the work to face-lift railway station and its annexes.
People in the coal mine village and Kaechon City visited the soldiers with aid materials they prepared with sincerity.
A lot of goods sent to them by the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Construction and Building Materials Industry, the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Fisheries, the State Hydro-meteorological Administration and other ministries and national institutions and the Kaechon City Party Committee and other units.
The soldiers distributed them among coal miners and made efforts not to cause any slightest inconvenience to the people in the afflicted areas.
Thanks to this close unity between service personnel and people based on their warm feelings, bridges and culverts in the area of Joyang Coal Mine and Kaechon-Joyang railway section were successfully rehabilitated. -0-

Analysis of new satellite images shows the North Korean government is blurring the lines between its political prison camps and the surrounding population, Amnesty International said on Thursday, as it reiterated its call for U.N. Member States to establish an independent Commission of Inquiry into grave, systematic and widespread human rights violations in North Korea -- including crimes against humanity.
Responding to reports of the possible construction of a new political prison camp (Kwan-li-so) adjacent to Camp No. 14 in Kaechon, South Pyongan Province, Amnesty International USA's (AIUSA) Science for Human Rights program commissioned satellite imagery and analysis of the area from the commercial provider DigitalGlobe.
Analysts found that from 2006 to February 2013, North Korea constructed 20km of perimeter around the Ch'oma-Bong valley -- located 70km north-northeast of Pyongyang -- and its inhabitants, new controlled access points and a number of probable guard towers. Analysts also found construction of new buildings that appear to house workers, likely associated with an expansion of mining activity in the region.
The activity points to a tightening in the control of movement of the local population adjacent to Camp No. 14, thus muddying the line between those detained in the political prison camp and the valley's inhabitants. This raises fears for the population within the perimeter, the current conditions faced by them and the North Korean government's future intentions for the valley and those that live there.
"We expected to find a new or expanded prison camp. What we found is in some ways even more worrisome," said Frank Jannuzi, AIUSA deputy executive director. "The creation of a security perimeter with controlled access points and guard towers beyond what appears to be the formal boundaries of Camp 14 blurs the line between more than 100,000 people who suffer in North Korea's Kwan-li-so system and the neighboring civilian population."
Hundreds of thousands of people -- including children -- are held in political prison camps and other detention facilities in North Korea, where they are subject to human rights violations, such as forced hard labor, denying food as punishment, torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. Many of those held in political prison camps have not committed any crime, but are related to those deemed unfriendly to the regime and detained as a form of collective punishment.
"The security and control adjacent to Camp 14 shows the degree to which general repression and restrictions on the right to liberty of movement have become commonplace in North Korea," said Rajiv Narayan, North Korea Researcher for Amnesty International. "These latest images reinforce why it is imperative a robust independent Commission of Inquiry is established to investigate the grave and systematic human rights abuses that continue under North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's rule."
Amnesty International is calling for unfettered access to the area for human rights observers, to include both the Ch'oma-bong valley as well as Camp No. 14, and for North Korea to officially acknowledge that political prison camps such as Camp 15 in Yodok and Camp 14 in Kaechon exist.
In 2011, Amnesty International published analysis of satellite imagery that showed the expansion of the notorious Yodok political prison camp, believed to house 50,000 men, women, and children. According to former detainees at the political prison camp at Yodok, prisoners are forced to work in slave-like conditions and are frequently subjected to torture and other ill-treatment. Despite this overwhelming evidence the North Korean government continues to deny the camp's existence.
Amnesty International reaffirms its call for member states to adopt a resolution at the 22nd session of the U.N. Human Rights Council to establish an independent Commission of Inquiry into the abysmal conditions and the general human rights situation in North Korea -- described by the U.N. as being in "its own category" -- both in political prison camps and outside.

A campaign to oust Kim Jong-Un, and shut down the various Camps within North Korea
The Oppression is going on too long. Since the establishment of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) in 1945, after the countries split due to a difference in government, there has been an unprecedented amount of oppression amongst the DPRK, which is now known as North Korea. For years, the people within Pyongyang and other cities are now subjected to a 1984-esque dictatorship; secret police are among the most corrupt, surreptitiously taking citizens, and forcing them to work in forced labor camps, and in some cases, killing them. These citizens are then erased from any records; extremely similar to the notion of 'vaporization' within George Orwell's book "1984". For too long, the North Korean government has been able to perform these atrocities without any sort of repercussions; but now, its time for a change.
Work camps: North Korean work/death camps have been a major part of the totalitarian regime since its founding. It has been a place to send free thinkers and revolutionaries. These camps have been an easy solution to suppress "pesky" revolutionaries. As seen in leaked secret footage of the inner workings of a forced labor camp, a man is shot as an example. An example of what i ask you? Stopping for a split second to eat a chestnut.
Together we can persuade the US to push for more stringent policies
Attention:
Most of the attention North Korea receives is directed towards the totalitarian dictator, Kim Jong-Un. Only around 10-15% of the media coverage and international attention is focused on the internment camps near Pyongyang; and the most notice is focused on Kaechon, a forced labor/concentration camp consisting of two separate locations; camp 14 and camp 18; located 25 miles north of the capital. Kaechon is quite possibly the wickedest internment camp that is located within North Korea, and for horrid reasons.
Need:
Those who 'dare oppose the regime' and political prisoners are interred here; and the treatment of these prisoners is far less than humane. Prisoners are told to work 18 hours a day, with the slightest infraction causing death by firing squad, as well as the subsequent execution of 2 generations of their family. The food is scarce, and the companionship is even more so. According to the rules of the Kaechon internment camp,
1. You must not escape.
2. Three or more inmates must not meet together.
3. You must not steal.
4. You must absolutely obey orders of the Protection Agency guidance officers.
5. You must immediately report if you saw any outsiders or suspicious people.
6. All inmates must carefully watch over each other and immediately report each other's unusual behavior.
7. You must over-fulfill all tasks assigned to you.
8. Unless it is job-related, no contact between male and female is allowed.
9. You must be truly remorseful for your own mistakes.
10. You shall be immediately shot by firing squad if you ever violate these laws and regulations of the camp. [KBA 559-60]
These regulations are eerily similar to a Nazi concentration camps, with the notion of disobedience being squandered by the harsh rules within the gulags.
Satisfaction:
Freeing the people will bring prosperity to the world. To be free is a fundamental human right. Taking Kim Jong-Un out of power and uniting the Koreas would free people who never had a say in the matter. One united Korea would release much tension worldwide and lead to a more promising future. The nuclear concerns pertaining to the North Korean country are escalating daily; and with the elimination of the dictatorship, those anxieties will be relinquished. Trade opportunities will grow within the newly unified Korean state, and the country (could) become a trading partner with the United States, increasing our profit and further eliminating and apprehensive feelings towards the nation.

Pyongyang, August 10 (KCNA) -- Kaechon-Joyang railway section in South Phyongan Province of the DPRK has been rehabilitated from flood damage in a short span of time, fully displaying the great army-people unity.

Kaech'ŏn (Hangul: 개천시, Hanja: 价川市) is a city in South Pyongan Province, North Korea. Kaechon's coordinates are 39°41′55″N 125°54′22″E / 39.69861°N 125.90611°E / 39.69861; 125.90611.
The Myohyangsan, Changansan, Ch'ŏnsŏngsan, and Ch'ŏngryongsan mountain ranges come together in Kaechon. The highest peak is Paekt'apsan. The most important rivers are the Ch'ŏngch'ŏn River and the Taedong River. The area of the city is 61% forested.
Water resources are abundant, and several reservoirs are located in Kaechon.
Agriculture has been extensivley developed, including livestock and fruit orchards. Machining and metalworking are the dominant industries, mining has also become more prominent.
Tourist sites in Kaechon include Songam Cavern, Taeripsa Temple with its 9-level stone pagoda, the fortresses of Changhamsŏng, T'osŏng, and Kosasansŏng, Namsa dolmen, and the group of dolments at Mukpangsan. There are also Yŏnpung Lake, which was constructed in 1956, and Yongwŏn Cavern, which was discovered in 1966 and is preserved as North Korea's Natural Monument No. 43.

Analysts also found construction of new buildings that appear to house workers, likely associated with an expansion of mining activity in the region. The activity points to a tightening in the control of movement of the local population adjacent to Camp No. 14, thus muddying the line between those detained in the political prison camp and the valley's inhabitants. This raises fears for the population within the perimeter, the current conditions faced by them and the North Korean government's future intentions for the valley and those that live there. "We expected to find a new or expanded prison camp. What we found is in some ways even more worrisome," said Frank Jannuzi, AIUSA deputy executive director. "The creation of a security perimeter with controlled access points and guard towers beyond what appears to be the formal boundaries of Camp 14 blurs the line between more than 100,000 people who suffer in North Korea's Kwan-li-so system and the neighboring civilian population." Hundreds of thousands of people -- including children -- are held in political prison camps and other detention facilities in North Korea, where they are subject to human rights violations, such as forced hard labor, denying food as punishment, torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. Many of those held in political prison camps have not committed any crime, but are related to those deemed unfriendly to the regime and detained as a form of collective punishment. "The security and control adjacent to Camp 14 shows the degree to which general repression and restrictions on the right to liberty of movement have become commonplace in North Korea," said Rajiv Narayan, North Korea Researcher for Amnesty International. "These latest images reinforce why it is imperative a robust independent Commission of Inquiry is established to investigate the grave and systematic human rights abuses that continue under North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's rule." Amnesty International is calling for unfettered access to the area for human rights observers, to include both the Ch'oma-bong valley as well as Camp No. 14, and for North Korea to officially acknowledge that political prison camps such as Camp 15 in Yodok and Camp 14 in Kaechon exist. In 2011, Amnesty International published analysis of satellite imagery that showed the expansion of the notorious Yodok political prison camp, believed to house 50,000 men, women, and children. According to former detainees at the political prison camp at Yodok, prisoners are forced to work in slave-like conditions and are frequently subjected to torture and other ill-treatment. Despite this overwhelming evidence the North Korean government continues to deny the camp's existence. Amnesty International reaffirms its call for member states to adopt a resolution at the 22nd session of the U.N. Human Rights Council to establish an independent Commission of Inquiry into the abysmal conditions and the general human rights situation in North Korea -- described by the U.N. as being in "its own category" -- both in political prison camps and outside. -

For years, the people within Pyongyang and other cities are now subjected to a 1984-esque dictatorship; secret police are among the most corrupt, surreptitiously taking citizens, and forcing them to work in forced labor camps, and in some cases, killing them. These citizens are then erased from any records; extremely similar to the notion of 'vaporization' within George Orwell's book "1984". For too long, the North Korean government has been able to perform these atrocities without any sort of repercussions; but now, its time for a change. Work camps: North Korean work/death camps have been a major part of the totalitarian regime since its founding. It has been a place to send free thinkers and revolutionaries. These camps have been an easy solution to suppress "pesky" revolutionaries. As seen in leaked secret footage of the inner workings of a forced labor camp, a man is shot as an example. An example of what i ask you? Stopping for a split second to eat a chestnut. Together we can persuade the US to push for more stringent policies Attention: Most of the attention North Korea receives is directed towards the totalitarian dictator, Kim Jong-Un. Only around 10-15% of the media coverage and international attention is focused on the internment camps near Pyongyang; and the most notice is focused on Kaechon, a forced labor/concentration camp consisting of two separate locations; camp 14 and camp 18; located 25 miles north of the capital. Kaechon is quite possibly the wickedest internment camp that is located within North Korea, and for horrid reasons. Need: Those who 'dare oppose the regime' and political prisoners are interred here; and the treatment of these prisoners is far less than humane. Prisoners are told to work 18 hours a day, with the slightest infraction causing death by firing squad, as well as the subsequent execution of 2 generations of their family. The food is scarce, and the companionship is even more so. According to the rules of the Kaechon internment camp, 1. You must not escape. 2. Three or more inmates must not meet together. 3. You must not steal. 4. You must absolutely obey orders of the Protection Agency guidance officers. 5. You must immediately report if you saw any outsiders or suspicious people. 6. All inmates must carefully watch over each other and immediately report each other's unusual behavior. 7. You must over-fulfill all tasks assigned to you. 8. Unless it is job-related, no contact between male and female is allowed. 9. You must be truly remorseful for your own mistakes. 10. You shall be immediately shot by firing squad if you ever violate these laws and regulations of the camp. [KBA 559-60] These regulations are eerily similar to a Nazi concentration camps, with the notion of disobedience being squandered by the harsh rules within the gulags. Satisfaction: Freeing the people will bring prosperity to the world. To be free is a fundamental human right. Taking Kim Jong-Un out of power and uniting the Koreas would free people who never had a say in the matter. One united Korea would release much tension worldwide and lead to a more promising future. The nuclear concerns pertaining to the North Korean country are escalating daily; and with the elimination of the dictatorship, those anxieties will be relinquished. Trade opportunities will grow within the newly unified Korean state, and the country (could) become a trading partner with the United States, increasing our profit and further eliminating and apprehensive feelings towards the nation. Amnesty International has published satellite imagery and new testimony that shed light on the horrific conditions in North Korea's network of political prison camps, which hold an estimated 200,000 people.
The images reveal the location, size and conditions inside the camps. Amnesty International spoke to a number of people, including former inmates from the political prison camp at Yodok as well as guards in other political prison camps, to obtain information about life in the camps.
According to former detainees at the political prison camp at Yodok, prisoners are forced to work in conditions approaching slavery and are frequently subjected to torture and other cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment. All the detainees at Yodok have witnessed public executions.
"North Korea can no longer deny the undeniable. For decades the authorities have refused to admit to the existence of mass political prison camps," said Sam Zarifi, Amnesty International Asia Pacific Director.

Great Unity between Service Personnel and People Displayed in Recovering from Flood Damage
Pyongyang, August 9 (KCNA) -- The great unity between service personnel and people was fully displayed in Kaechon City, South Phyongan Province to recover from the recent flood damage in the country.
The downpour and heavy rain hit the west coastal area of the country, causing the landslide. It destroyed Joyang Coal Mine Station and Kaechon-Joyang railway section.
Downpour in Kaechon area destroyed the bank in the ravine north of Joyang Coal Mine Station, leaving stones and mud nearly three meters in thickness piled up in the 250 m-long area of the station.
It also left equipment and freight wagons around the station yard and the nearby area buried under silt or overturned and rails bent.
The dear respected Kim Jong Un acquainted himself in detail with the flood damage and issued an order to the Korean People's Army to finish the recovery operation in the shortest possible time.
In hearty response to the order of the Supreme Commander, KPA soldiers arrived at the spot through a forced march over the night. They started their operation at the dawn of August 7 before putting up tents. They made a breakthrough in the operation.
A high-pitched operation went on non-stop, which resulted in carrying out 50 percent of the total quota in the first day of the operation.
Generals and other commanding officers and soldiers worked hard to eradicate the aftermath.
Military families provided soldiers with meals. They joined the service personnel, encouraging them in their operation.
It was completed in a matter of just over 50 hours after the start of the work. They succeeded in clearing muck, leveling the low ground with at least 100 000 cubic meters of earth and sand and readjusting roadbed, putting the freight transport to normal.
Beautiful traits of the unity between service personnel and people were fully displayed in the work site.
Soldiers of the People's Army discussed measures to help people in their living despite huge tasks before them.
They visited flood-stricken families with relief materials and consoled them.
They, at the same time, rebuilt dykes in such a way that they would not be affected by another flood and pushed forward the work to face-lift railway station and its annexes.
People in the coal mine village and Kaechon City visited the soldiers with aid materials they prepared with sincerity.
A lot of goods sent to them by the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Construction and Building Materials Industry, the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Fisheries, the State Hydro-meteorological Administration and other ministries and national institutions and the Kaechon City Party Committee and other units.
The soldiers distributed them among coal miners and made efforts not to cause any slightest inconvenience to the people in the afflicted areas.
Thanks to this close unity between service personnel and people based on their warm feelings, bridges and culverts in the area of Joyang Coal Mine and Kaechon-Joyang railway section were successfully rehabilitated. -0-

Analysis of new satellite images shows the North Korean government is blurring the lines between its political prison camps and the surrounding population, Amnesty International said on Thursday, as it reiterated its call for U.N. Member States to establish an independent Commission of Inquiry into grave, systematic and widespread human rights violations in North Korea -- including crimes against humanity.
Responding to reports of the possible construction of a new political prison camp (Kwan-li-so) adjacent to Camp No. 14 in Kaechon, South Pyongan Province, Amnesty International USA's (AIUSA) Science for Human Rights program commissioned satellite imagery and analysis of the area from the commercial provider DigitalGlobe.
Analysts found that from 2006 to February 2013, North Korea constructed 20km of perimeter around the Ch'oma-Bong valley -- located 70km north-northeast of Pyongyang -- and its inhabitants, new controlled access points and a number of probable guard towers. Analysts also found construction of new buildings that appear to house workers, likely associated with an expansion of mining activity in the region.
The activity points to a tightening in the control of movement of the local population adjacent to Camp No. 14, thus muddying the line between those detained in the political prison camp and the valley's inhabitants. This raises fears for the population within the perimeter, the current conditions faced by them and the North Korean government's future intentions for the valley and those that live there.
"We expected to find a new or expanded prison camp. What we found is in some ways even more worrisome," said Frank Jannuzi, AIUSA deputy executive director. "The creation of a security perimeter with controlled access points and guard towers beyond what appears to be the formal boundaries of Camp 14 blurs the line between more than 100,000 people who suffer in North Korea's Kwan-li-so system and the neighboring civilian population."
Hundreds of thousands of people -- including children -- are held in political prison camps and other detention facilities in North Korea, where they are subject to human rights violations, such as forced hard labor, denying food as punishment, torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. Many of those held in political prison camps have not committed any crime, but are related to those deemed unfriendly to the regime and detained as a form of collective punishment.
"The security and control adjacent to Camp 14 shows the degree to which general repression and restrictions on the right to liberty of movement have become commonplace in North Korea," said Rajiv Narayan, North Korea Researcher for Amnesty International. "These latest images reinforce why it is imperative a robust independent Commission of Inquiry is established to investigate the grave and systematic human rights abuses that continue under North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's rule."
Amnesty International is calling for unfettered access to the area for human rights observers, to include both the Ch'oma-bong valley as well as Camp No. 14, and for North Korea to officially acknowledge that political prison camps such as Camp 15 in Yodok and Camp 14 in Kaechon exist.
In 2011, Amnesty International published analysis of satellite imagery that showed the expansion of the notorious Yodok political prison camp, believed to house 50,000 men, women, and children. A campaign to oust Kim Jong-Un, and shut down the various Camps within North Korea
The Oppression is going on too long. Since the establishment of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) in 1945, after the countries split due to a difference in government, there has been an unprecedented amount of oppression amongst the DPRK, which is now known as North Korea. For years, the people within Pyongyang and other cities are now subjected to a 1984-esque dictatorship; secret police are among the most corrupt, surreptitiously taking citizens, and forcing them to work in forced labor camps, and in some cases, killing them. These citizens are then erased from any records; extremely similar to the notion of 'vaporization' within George Orwell's book "1984". For too long, the North Korean government has been able to perform these atrocities without any sort of repercussions; but now, its time for a change.
Work camps: North Korean work/death camps have been a major part of the totalitarian regime since its founding. It has been a place to send free thinkers and revolutionaries. Most of the attention North Korea receives is directed towards the totalitarian dictator, Kim Jong-Un. Only around 10-15% of the media coverage and international attention is focused on the internment camps near Pyongyang; and the most notice is focused on Kaechon, a forced labor/concentration camp consisting of two separate locations; camp 14 and camp 18; located 25 miles north of the capital. Kaechon is quite possibly the wickedest internment camp that is located within North Korea, and for horrid reasons.
Need:
Those who 'dare oppose the regime' and political prisoners are interred here; and the treatment of these prisoners is far less than humane. Prisoners are told to work 18 hours a day, with the slightest infraction causing death by firing squad, as well as the subsequent execution of 2 generations of their family. The food is scarce, and the companionship is even more so. According to the rules of the Kaechon internment camp,
1. You must not escape.
2. Three or more inmates must not meet together.
3. You must not steal.
4. You must absolutely obey orders of the Protection Agency guidance officers.
5. You must immediately report if you saw any outsiders or suspicious people.
6. All inmates must carefully watch over each other and immediately report each other's unusual behavior.
7. You must over-fulfill all tasks assigned to you.
8. Unless it is job-related, no contact between male and female is allowed.
9. You must be truly remorseful for your own mistakes.
10. You shall be immediately shot by firing squad if you ever violate these laws and regulations of the camp. [KBA 559-60]
These regulations are eerily similar to a Nazi concentration camps, with the notion of disobedience being squandered by the harsh rules within the gulags.
Satisfaction:
Freeing the people will bring prosperity to the world. To be free is a fundamental human right. Taking Kim Jong-Un out of power and uniting the Koreas would free people who never had a say in the matter. One united Korea would release much tension worldwide and lead to a more promising future. The nuclear concerns pertaining to the North Korean country are escalating daily; and with the elimination of the dictatorship, those anxieties will be relinquished. Trade opportunities will grow within the newly unified Korean state, and the country (could) become a trading partner with the United States, increasing our profit and further eliminating and apprehensive feelings towards the nation.

A campaign to oust Kim Jong-Un, and shut down the various Camps within North Korea
The Oppression is going on too long. Since the establishment of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) in 1945, after the countries split due to a difference in government, there has been an unprecedented amount of oppression amongst the DPRK, which is now known as North Korea. For years, the people within Pyongyang and other cities are now subjected to a 1984-esque dictatorship; secret police are among the most corrupt, surreptitiously taking citizens, and forcing them to work in forced labor camps, and in some cases, killing them. These citizens are then erased from any records; extremely similar to the notion of 'vaporization' within George Orwell's book "1984". For too long, the North Korean government has been able to perform these atrocities without any sort of repercussions; but now, its time for a change.
Work camps: North Korean work/death camps have been a major part of the totalitarian regime since its founding. It has been a place to send free thinkers and revolutionaries. Servicepersons and people turned out as one in hearty response to an order issued by the Korean People's Army Supreme Commander Marshal Kim Jong Un and successfully rehabilitated Joyang Coal Mine Station and roadbeds and bridges in scores places in Kaechon-Joyang railway section in a matter of just over 50 hours after the rehabilitation drive started.
The first freight train loaded with coal left Joyang Coal Mine Station on Friday amid the warm send-off by thousands of service personnel and people.
The train departed from the railway terminal, sounding its whistle indicative of the single mind of the army and people. -0-

Google will be hosting Dong Hyuk Shin, a 26-year-old North Korean defector born and raised in a concentration camp. Shin was born on Nov. 19, 1982 and called the camp home until 2005. While at the camp, he endured daily beatings, torture, starvation-level rations, saw forced abortions and even witnessed the public execution of his mother and brother in 1996. Shin described his life of total isolation from the world: "In South Korea, although there is disappointment and sadness, there is also so much joy, happiness and comfort. In Kaechon, I did not even know such emotions existed. The only emotion I ever knew was fear: fear of beatings, fear of starvation, fear of torture and fear of death." LiNK's Executive Director Adrian Hong will brief the audience on the broader issue of human rights in North Korea, as well as the current refugee situation and what can be done to help. Liberty in North Korea, or LiNK, is an international non-governmental organization devoted to human rights in North Korea and the protection of North Korean refugees.

Shin has said that he misrepresented the prison camp in which he was born and that he changed the dates of and reasons for his torture. "At this point I may or may not be able to continue in my work and efforts in trying to eliminate the political prison camps and bring justice to the oppressed," Shin wrote in a Facebook post.
Shin Dong-hyuk was born inside Kaechon #14, one of the world's harshest labor camps. His parents were political prisoners, declared enemies of the state for having committed minor offenses against the North Korean regime. Shin was routinely subjected to torture and knew nothing of the outside world until his escape at the age of 23.
Today he is on a mission to tell the world his story. And to remind us of the estimated 200,000 other forced laborers currently languishing under the regime of Kim Jong-un.

A new report says those caught taking the ultimate chance for freedom are often thrown into a life of squalor and back-breaking labor.
Our correspondent in charge of North Korean affairs Connie Kim has more on the fresh human rights report.
North Koreans caught defecting are often sent to prison camps located in Kaechon-si or Hweryong-si .
The camps are notorious for their awful living and working conditions.
Former prisoners report having had to live behind a three-meter high fence,... and say they were categorized according to their health and workload.
North Koreans caught defecting twice have been sent straight to these prison camps.
But this year's white paper on human rights in North Korea, published by the Seoul-based Korea Institute of National Unification,... says the punishments for those attempting to flee have intensified.
Those caught defecting even once are immediately sent to the camps.
The harsh realities the prisoners face are documented in the testimonies of 180 defectors who were once imprisoned at the camps.
One defector described an incident where a female prisoner was brutally beaten for dancing.
Another defector said prisoners were beaten up if they didn't fulfill their daily quota for work.
Making the situation worse, multiple layers of sanctions have recently been imposed on the regime making it difficult to provide North Korean citizens with humanitarian aid,
"Experts recommend that government organizations and private institutions should aim to devise policies addressing the North's human rights situation that are separate from the sanctions on the regime."
"Currently, the justice ministry and private institutions are researching the human rights situation in North Korea. And the unification ministry recently said it will establish a North Korea human rights record center. Rather than having overlapping roles, each entity should have separate tasks to devise policies to improve North Korea human rights situation."
The general consensus among experts is that efforts to improve human rights in the North should be planned with long-term goals in mind, in preparation for a reunified Korea.

Pyongyang, August 14 (KCNA) -- The current torrential rains are causing an enormous damage to the various sectors of the national economy in the DPRK.
Tens of pits of coal mines in Tokchon and Kaechon areas, South Phyongan Province were submerged and many facilities were destroyed as of August 13.
More than 20 collieries were inundated completely.
Over 60 pits were deluged and 400-odd facilities including winches and over 70 cutting faces were inundated in more than ten mines including Jungsan Mine of South Phyongan Province, Unpha Mine of North Hwanghae Province and Sudong Mine of South Hamgyong Province.
Owing to the rainstorms, more than 500 high voltage power towers collapsed, five electric power substations of large capacity were inundated and more than ten transformers and other facilities were severely hurt in North Hwanghae, South Phyongan and South Hamgyong provinces.

Pyongyang, August 14 (KCNA) -- The current torrential rains are causing an enormous damage to the various sectors of the national economy in the DPRK.
Tens of pits of coal mines in Tokchon and Kaechon areas, South Phyongan Province were submerged and many facilities were destroyed as of August 13.
More than 20 collieries were inundated completely.
Over 60 pits were deluged and 400-odd facilities including winches and over 70 cutting faces were inundated in more than ten mines including Jungsan Mine of South Phyongan Province, Unpha Mine of North Hwanghae Province and Sudong Mine of South Hamgyong Province.
Owing to the rainstorms, more than 500 high voltage power towers collapsed, five electric power substations of large capacity were inundated and more than ten transformers and other facilities were severely hurt in North Hwanghae, South Phyongan and South Hamgyong provinces.

One defector testified of an incident where a female prisoner was brutally beaten for dancing.
Another defector said prisoners were beaten up if they didn't fulfill their daily quota of work.
The human rights of North Koreans working abroad are also under the microscope.
North Koreans working in the Middle East, China and Russia are usually not treated or paid fairly,… a factor that contributed to the mass defection this month of a group of North Korean restaurant workers to the South.

The harsh realities the prisoners face are documented in the testimonies of 180 defectors who were once imprisoned at the camps.
One defector described an incident where a female prisoner was brutally beaten for dancing.
Another defector said prisoners were beaten up if they didn't fulfill their daily quota for work.
Making the situation worse, multiple layers of sanctions have recently been imposed on the regime making it difficult to provide North Korean citizens with humanitarian aid,
"Experts recommend that government organizations and private institutions should aim to devise policies addressing the North's human rights situation that are separate from the sanctions on the regime."
"Currently, the justice ministry and private institutions are researching the human rights situation in North Korea. And the unification ministry recently said it will establish a North Korea human rights record center. Rather than having overlapping roles, each entity should have separate tasks to devise policies to improve North Korea human rights situation."
The general consensus among experts is that efforts to improve human rights in the North should be planned with long-term goals in mind, in preparation for a reunified Korea.

Workers of the hydro-power stations have fulfilled their monthly and quarterly plans by maintaining a high level of water and ensuring a high operation rate of equipment.
Signal successes in electricity production were reported from different thermal power plants. The Pyongyang Thermal Power Complex carried out its July power quota ahead of schedule. The Chongchongang Thermal Power Plant generated 20 percent more electricity than in the corresponding period of last year.
Officials and workers of the iron and steel production bases including the Chollima Steel Complex and the Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex significantly boosted production while consolidating the foundation for producing the Juche iron.
Miners of the Musan Mining Complex secured a lot of mining areas by carrying out blasting of 200,000 and 400,000 cubic meters of earth from the outset of the year. As a result, they produced 10,000 tons of concentrated iron ore outside their plan in recent months.

Camp 14 is inspired by Shin Dong-Hyuk, a man born in one of North Korea's gulags and one of only a handful to have escaped and been able to tell his tale. The gulag in question is called Kaechon Internment Camp, a.k.a. Camp 14. This piece presents moods and atmospheres that are founded in my own reaction to his stories of brutality and his own personal psychology, developed as a result of growing up in such an environment, which differs greatly from the average person's.
The piece focusses on creating a variety of sonorities derived from a small amount of material. Important compositional features include: emphasis on specific intervals as a structural device, harmonic use of the 24-note microtonal chromatic scale and symmetry.

Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- Flood-damage is further increasing in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
The continued heavy rainfalls across the country have done a huge damage to people's living and the national economy.
As of August 14, more than 46,580 houses for over 88,400 families have been destroyed totally or partially and flooded in Pyongyang, North and South Hwanghae provinces, North and South Phyongan provinces and Kangwon and South Hamgyong provinces, leaving over 300,000 flood-victims.
More than 11 percent of paddy and dry fields throughout the country were inundated, buried or washed away, some 55,000 square meters of railway roadbeds were carried away and over 400 industrial establishments were submerged under water.
In Pyongyang, the water level of the Taedong and Pothong Rivers went up highest since 1967, submerging Panwol and Turu Islets and some areas of Pothonggang, Phyongchon and Songyo districts, paralyzing the traffics and inundating, washing away or burying over 8,200 hectares of paddy and dry fields. The precipitations in North Hwanghae and South Phyongan provinces in seven days were nearly equivalent to the annual ones. The torrential rains destroyed totally or partially and submerged some 25,000 dwelling houses and washed away 63,000 hectares of paddy and dry fields. And they destroyed railways, roads, bridges and river banks and cut electric power and communication networks, thus causing huge amount of material losses.
In Kangwon Province, several thousand hectares of farm land were carried away and more than 27,700 dwelling houses were wrecked or inundated.
In South Hwanghae Province, a granary on the west coast, the heavy rainfalls coupled with strong wind did damage to at least 20,000 hectares of farm land and destroyed dwelling houses and public buildings.
Over twenty coal mines across the country including the coal mines in the Kaechon area were flooded. Some 60 pits were collapsed or inundated and 70 cutting faces and 400 facilities were under water in Jungsan, Unpha, Sudong and other mines.
In the field of railway transportation, over hundred sections of railway roadbeds were cut, 280 meter-long railway bridge beams were destroyed, three tunnels were flooded and 49 sections of railroad were buried by 14,300 cubic meters of earth triggered off by landslides. The disaster has suspended railway transportation.
Flood damage is now under investigation.
Pyongyang Hit by Flood
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- Pyongyang City was damaged by an unprecedented flood.
Heavy rains fell in Pyongyang from August 7 to 11. Their precipitation is 224 mm higher than that in the period from August 25 to 29, 1967.
The water level of the River Taedong went up rapidly by the week-long rainfalls. 13,650 cubic meters of water per second flew in the River Taedong at 21:00 on August 11. Its water level reached the dangerous line.
On top of this, the highest tide of the West Sea of Korea brought difficulties to manage the water of the river.
It resulted in hitting low-lying areas of the city and its suburbs.
Some streets of Pothonggang, Mangyongdae, Phyongchon and Central districts were submerged under two meters of water, suspending traffics and breaking the supply of electricity and communication networks.
The beautiful parks in Panwol, Ssuk, Konyu and other islets and on the sides of river were buried under silt beyond recognition.
According to the figures available, the flood claimed lives of several people, inundated dwelling houses for over 6,400 families, 300 public and production buildings and nearly 30 underground cross-roads and destroyed 240 sections of roads covering 23,000 square meters.
At least 8,200 hectares of paddy and dry fields were flooded, buried or carried away and 30-odd pumping stations, 80 sections of waterways and 30 sections of river-dykes were destroyed and scores of water pumps were spoiled.
Some 2,300 hectares of farm land were damaged by the flood in Kangnam County and Turu Islet of Rakrang District, one of vegetable production bases for the city, was submerged.

As of August 14, more than 46,580 houses for over 88,400 families have been destroyed totally or partially and flooded in Pyongyang, North and South Hwanghae provinces, North and South Phyongan provinces and Kangwon and South Hamgyong provinces, leaving over 300,000 flood-victims.
More than 11 percent of paddy and dry fields throughout the country were inundated, buried or washed away, some 55,000 square meters of railway roadbeds were carried away and over 400 industrial establishments were submerged under water.
In Pyongyang, the water level of the Taedong and Pothong Rivers went up highest since 1967, submerging Panwol and Turu Islets and some areas of Pothonggang, Phyongchon and Songyo districts, paralyzing the traffics and inundating, washing away or burying over 8,200 hectares of paddy and dry fields. The precipitations in North Hwanghae and South Phyongan provinces in seven days were nearly equivalent to the annual ones. The torrential rains destroyed totally or partially and submerged some 25,000 dwelling houses and washed away 63,000 hectares of paddy and dry fields. And they destroyed railways, roads, bridges and river banks and cut electric power and communication networks, thus causing huge amount of material losses.
In Kangwon Province, several thousand hectares of farm land were carried away and more than 27,700 dwelling houses were wrecked or inundated.
In South Hwanghae Province, a granary on the west coast, the heavy rainfalls coupled with strong wind did damage to at least 20,000 hectares of farm land and destroyed dwelling houses and public buildings.
Over twenty coal mines across the country including the coal mines in the Kaechon area were flooded. Some 60 pits were collapsed or inundated and 70 cutting faces and 400 facilities were under water in Jungsan, Unpha, Sudong and other mines.
In the field of railway transportation, over hundred sections of railway roadbeds were cut, 280 meter-long railway bridge beams were destroyed, three tunnels were flooded and 49 sections of railroad were buried by 14,300 cubic meters of earth triggered off by landslides. The disaster has suspended railway transportation.
Flood damage is now under investigation.
Pyongyang Hit by Flood
Pyongyang, August 16 (KCNA) -- Pyongyang City was damaged by an unprecedented flood.
Heavy rains fell in Pyongyang from August 7 to 11. Their precipitation is 224 mm higher than that in the period from August 25 to 29, 1967.
The water level of the River Taedong went up rapidly by the week-long rainfalls. 13,650 cubic meters of water per second flew in the River Taedong at 21:00 on August 11. Its water level reached the dangerous line.
On top of this, the highest tide of the West Sea of Korea brought difficulties to manage the water of the river.
It resulted in hitting low-lying areas of the city and its suburbs.
Some streets of Pothonggang, Mangyongdae, Phyongchon and Central districts were submerged under two meters of water, suspending traffics and breaking the supply of electricity and communication networks.
The beautiful parks in Panwol, Ssuk, Konyu and other islets and on the sides of river were buried under silt beyond recognition.
According to the figures available, the flood claimed lives of several people, inundated dwelling houses for over 6,400 families, 300 public and production buildings and nearly 30 underground cross-roads and destroyed 240 sections of roads covering 23,000 square meters.
At least 8,200 hectares of paddy and dry fields were flooded, buried or carried away and 30-odd pumping stations, 80 sections of waterways and 30 sections of river-dykes were destroyed and scores of water pumps were spoiled.
Some 2,300 hectares of farm land were damaged by the flood in Kangnam County and Turu Islet of Rakrang District, one of vegetable production bases for the city, was submerged.
