Its manufactured tweeness is renowned – the shops selling soft-toy shillelaghs and shamrocks, the placards on street corners pointing to trad-music sessions. However, it has attractions beyond its proximity to lakes, waterfalls and woodland spreading beneath a skyline of 1000m-plus peaks. In a town that's been practising the tourism game for more than 250 years, competition keeps standards high and visitors on all budgets can expect to find good restaurants, great pubs and comfortable accommodation. The Killarney area has been inhabited since at least the early Bronze Age, when copper ore was mined on Ross Island. In the 7th century St Finian founded a monastery on Inisfallen in Lough Leane, and the region became a focus for Christianity. The lands around the lough were occupied by the Gaelic clans of McCarthy Mór and the O'Donoghues of Ross, who built Ross Castle, before coming into the possession of the Herberts of Muckross and the Earls of Kenmare. It wasn't until the mid-18th century that Viscount Kenmare began to develop the region as an Irish version of England's Lake District, aided by the arrival of the railway in 1853, and famous visits by Sir Walter Scott in 1825 and Queen Victoria in 1861. By 1895 Killarney was on the Thomas Cook package tour itinerary. Mobbed in summer, Killarney is perhaps at its best in the late spring and early autumn when the crowds are manageable, but the weather is still good enough to enjoy its outdoor activities. Killarney is a medium-sized town in County Kerry, southwestern Ireland. The town is on the northeastern shore of Lough Leane, which is part of Killarney National Park. The town and its hinterland is home to St Mary's Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross House and Abbey, the Lakes of Killarney, MacGillycuddy's Reeks, Purple Mountain, Mangerton Mountain, the Gap of Dunloe and Torc Waterfall. Its natural heritage, its history and its location on the Ring of Kerry make Killarney a popular tourist destination. Killarney is, according to the online travel website Tripadvisor, Ireland's most popular travel destination for 2015, placing it 23rd in Europe. Killarney was bestowed the prestigious "Best Kept Town" award in 2007, in a cross-border competition jointly organised by the Department of the Environment and the Northern Ireland Amenity Council. In 2011, it was named Ireland's tidiest town and the cleanest town in the country by Irish Business Against Litter. On 16 October 2012, the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government published Putting People First, an "action plan for effective local government". Killarney Town Council was abolished in June 2014 when the Local Government Reform Act 2014 was implemented.
