Sambor Prei Kuk (Khmer: ប្រាសាទសំបូរព្រៃគុក, Prasat Sambor Prei Kuk) is an archaeological site in Cambodia located in Kampong Thom Province, 30 km (19 mi) north of Kampong Thom, the provincial capital, 176 km (109 mi) east of Angkor and 206 km (128 mi) north of Phnom Penh. The now ruined complex dates back to the Pre-Angkorian Chenla Kingdom (late 6th to 9th century), established by king Isanavarman I as central royal sanctuary and capital, known then as Isanapura. The Cambodian government has included Sambor Prei Kuk on its Tentative List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Located on the Eastern bank of the Tonle Sap lake, close to the Sen River, the central part of Sambor Prei Kuk is divided into three main groups. Each group has a square layout surrounded by a brick wall. The structures of the overall archaeological area were constructed at variable times: the southern and north groups (7th century) by Isanavarman I, who is considered a possible founder of the city and the central group (later date).
Sambor Prei Kuk or Isanapura was the capital of the ancient Chenla Kingdom. This video contains also my one night with breakfast Kampong Thom Village Hotel and some photographs of the Kampong Kdei Bridge, a building of the Khmer Empire.
The Virtual Reconstruction Project of the centeral temple at Sambor Prei Kuk, in Cambodia, is an attempt to apply 21st century technology to 7th century cultural heritage. Sambor Prei Kuk (SPK) provides the earliest record of Khmer temples, predating better known (and better preserved) Angkor Wat by several centuries. Hence, the study of SPK is crucial for understanding the Khmer, pre-Angkorian tradition; and the subsequent development of temple cities such as Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

Cambodia's most impressive group of pre-Angkorian monuments can be found at Sambor Prei Kuk, some 30kms north of the provincial capital of Kompong Thom. It's just two hours away from Siem Reap, home of the Angkor temples. Scattered throughout the shady forest are upwards of 100 mainly brick temples that belonged to a 7th century Chenla capital called Isanapura. There are three main complexes, each with a central tower surrounded by minor shrines, ponds, gates and walls. Some of the brick carvings are elaborate, as are the atmospheric brick towers strangled by tree roots. It makes for an ideal stop-over on the way to Siem Reap, especially if you are interested in the chronological evolution of Cambodia's temple architecture.
