Preah Khan (Khmer: ប្រាសាទព្រះខ័ន; "Royal Sword") is a temple at Angkor, Cambodia, built in the 12th century for King Jayavarman VII to honor his father. It is located northeast of Angkor Thom and just west of the Jayatataka baray, with which it was associated. It was the centre of a substantial organisation, with almost 100,000 officials and servants. The temple is flat in design, with a basic plan of successive rectangular galleries around a Buddhist sanctuary complicated by Hindu satellite temples and numerous later additions. Like the nearby Ta Prohm, Preah Khan has been left largely unrestored, with numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins.
Preah Khan was built on the site of Jayavarman VII's victory over the invading Chams in 1191. Unusually the modern name, meaning "holy sword", is derived from the meaning of the original—Nagara Jayasri (holy city of victory). The site may previously have been occupied by the royal palaces of Yasovarman II and Tribhuvanadityavarman. The temple's foundation stela has provided considerable information about the history and administration of the site: the main image, of the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara in the form of the king's father, was dedicated in 1191 (the king's mother had earlier been commemorated in the same way at Ta Prohm). 430 other deities also had shrines on the site, each of which received an allotment of food, clothing, perfume and even mosquito nets; the temple's wealth included gold, silver, gems, 112,300 pearls and a cow with gilded horns. The institution combined the roles of city, temple and Buddhist university: there were 97,840 attendants and servants, including 1000 dancers and 1000 teachers.
Siem Reap (Khmer: ក្រុងសៀមរាប, pronounced [siəm riəp]; Thai: เสียมราฐ) is the capital city of Siem Reap Province in northwestern Cambodia, and a popular resort town as the gateway to Angkor region.
Siem Reap has colonial and Chinese-style architecture in the Old French Quarter, and around the Old Market. In the city, there are museums, traditional Apsara dance performances, a Cambodian cultural village, souvenir and handycraft shops, silk farms, rice-paddies in the countryside, fishing villages and a bird sanctuary near the Tonle Sap Lake.
Siem Reap today—being a popular tourist destination—has a large number of hotels, resorts, restaurants and businesses closely related to tourism. This is much owed to its proximity to the Angkor temples, the most popular tourist attraction in Cambodia.
The name "Siem Reap" can be translated to mean "Defeat of Siam" (siem in Khmer), and is commonly taken as a reference to an incident in the centuries-old conflict between the Siamese and Khmer kingdoms, although this is probably apocryphal. According to oral tradition, King Ang Chan (1516–1566) had named the town "Siem Reap", meaning "the defeat of Siam", after he repulsed an army sent to invade Cambodia by the Thai King Maha Chakkraphat in 1549. However, scholars consider this derivation to be simply a modern folk etymology, and maintain that the actual origin of the name is unknown.
Khan or KHAN may refer to:
Angkor Thom (Khmer: អង្គរធំ; literally: "Great City"), located in present-day Cambodia, was the last and most enduring capital city of the Khmer empire. It was established in the late twelfth century by King Jayavarman VII. It covers an area of 9 km², within which are located several monuments from earlier eras as well as those established by Jayavarman and his successors. At the centre of the city is Jayavarman's state temple, the Bayon, with the other major sites clustered around the Victory Square immediately to the north.
Angkor Thom was established as the capital of Jayavarman VII's empire, and was the centre of his massive building programme. One inscription found in the city refers to Jayavarman as the groom and the city as his bride.
Angkor Thom seems not to be the first Khmer capital on the site, however. Yasodharapura, dating from three centuries earlier, was centred slightly further northwest, and Angkor Thom overlapped parts of it. The most notable earlier temples within the city are the former state temple of Baphuon, and Phimeanakas, which was incorporated into the Royal Palace. The Khmers did not draw any clear distinctions between Angkor Thom and Yashodharapura: even in the fourteenth century an inscription used the earlier name. The name of Angkor Thom—great city—was in use from the 16th century.
Jayavarman VII, posthumous name of Mahaparamasaugata, (Khmer: ជ័យវរ្ម័នទី៧, 1125–1218) was a king (reigned c.1181–1218) of the Khmer Empire in present-day Siem Reap, Cambodia. He was the son of King Dharanindravarman II (r. 1150-1160) and Queen Sri Jayarajacudamani. He married Princess Jayarajadevi and then, after her death, married her sister Indradevi. The two women are commonly thought to have been a great inspiration to him, particularly in his unusual devotion to Buddhism, as only one prior Khmer king was a Buddhist. Jayavarman VII is generally considered by historians the most powerful Khmer monarch of all time.
Jayavarman probably spent his early years away from the Khmer capital. Jayavarman is Sanskrit for Victorious Warrior, with "Jaya" being Sanskrit for "Victorious" or "Successful" and "Varman" being the word for "Warrior" or an expert in martial arts.
In 1177 and again in 1178, the Cham invaded Cambodia. In 1177, Champa King Jaya Indravarman IV launched a surprise attack on the Khmer capital by sailing a fleet up the Mekong River, across Lake Tonlé Sap, and then up the Siem Reap River, a tributary of the Tonle Sap. The invaders pillaged the Khmer capital of Yasodharapura and put king Tribhuvanadityavarman to death. Also in 1178, Jayavarman came to historical prominence by leading a Khmer army that ousted the invaders, which included a naval battle depicted on the walls of the Bayon and Banteay Chmar. At the time, he may already have been in his 60s. Returning to the capital, he found it in disorder. He put an end to the disputes between warring factions and in 1181 was crowned king himself.
Hidden deep in the jungles of Cambodia's Angkor Archaeological Park, Preah Khan is a vast temple complex sprawling across nearly 140 acres. Built by the Khmer king Jayavarman the seventh in the late twelfth century as a monastery and center for learning, it was once the heart of a city of nearly 100,000. Working in close collaboration with the APSARA National Authority, and with support from generous donors, World Monuments Fund is committed to preserving and protecting this unparalleled treasure for generations to come. In order to reach Preah Khan, the temple complex north of Angkor Thom, we take nearly the same route as the day before. Our moped-rickshaw drives past Angkor Wat, through the south gate of Angkor Thom and past the Bayon and the Terrace of the Elephants. After we have let the northern town gate and the 100 m wide moat behind us, we reach Preah Khan. The temple is hidden in the woods. In the past Preah Khan was more than just a temple. It was both Buddhist monastery with shrines for 430 Hindu gods, Mahayana university with more than 1,000 teachers, as well as an agricultural economic management center. Before Angkor Thom had been built, Preah Khan was presumably the provisional capital of the Khmer empire. The temple formed the center of the city. The city with an area of 750 x 900 m was p...
After visiting Angkor Wat we headed over to Preah Khan to explore a less popular (but equally impressive temple) at the Temples of Angkor, Siem Reap Province, Cambodia. Immediately, we felt a sense of relief having escaped the enormous crowds at Angkor Wat. It was still early enough in the morning that we had nearly the entire temple to ourselves. Given that it is largely unrestored and has an eerie maze like quality, we enjoyed every moment of wandering around feeling somewhat like we were exploring more than just touring the complex. As our favorite temple, we recommend others to wake-up earlier than normal to come and explore before it becomes inundated with package tourists. It's the last day of Khmer New Year 2017 in Siem Reap province in Cambodia which fall on 16th April. We had breakfast in Krong Siem Reap and travelled to Preah Khan temple. My son who's in Superman suite is walking with us into the ancient temple from the east gate. It's an amazing temple built in the 12th century by the Khmer King Jayavaraman 7th. The shape of Preah Khan temple is rectangle and the size is about 138 acres. This temple is surrounded by a strong wall carved stone garudas a symbol of protection from dragons and the power. It's a great and amazing ancient temple in Southeast Asia and it's great to visit this temple with Superman. I'm using the Khmer New Year song at the beginning of this video because it's on Khmer New Year 2017. Thank you very much for watching. Please LIKE...
Use this as a guide to the Angkor province. We visited 9 temples and are listing them out below with times in case you want to skip through. Angkor is completely worth the hype! It's conveniently located close to Siem Reap (which is like a small Bangkok). Check out pub street for a party scene similar to Khao San Road. Authentic food is far and between but we're listing our top 2 pics below (don't judge on the Korean BBQ...) If time is what you are worried about; you can easily see 4-8 temples with a 1 day pass. You WILL need to get a Tuk Tuk to pull that off. Daily rentals are between $15-$20. Don't miss the sunrise at Angkor Wat and make sure you pick a spot on the south pond as the north gets extremely packed! Temple Times: Angkor Wat (Daytime): 4:00 -5:50 Ta Prohm Temple: 5:52 - ...

We recently completed a three day tour of the Temples of Angkor and along the way we learned some valuable things that we're sharing in the form of advice, tips and a guide for visiting the temples along with our personal favorite experiences. Tip number one is to get a three day pass as opposed to just a a one day pass. There are a lot of fascinating temples to explore aside from just Angkor Wat and trying to cram that all into one chaotic day is a bad idea. Instead go for a three day pass and take your time to experience the temples at a more leisurely pace. What's the point
You won't be there
Fortunately no one cares
You despise
You despair
Why don't you get angry
Don't you care
What do you think I came here for
I just wanted to see
What do you think I'm looking for
I don't want to believe
You already knew it
You already knew it
It takes too long
It's not enough
There's nothing left
And now he's gone again
He's gone again
What do you think I came here for
I just wanted to see
What do you think I'm looking for
