Peter Asher recounts the creation of The Beatles' Apple Records which brought together some of the most eclectic sounds and talents of the time.
Launched by The Beatles in 1968, Apple served as the new outlet for their own recordings as well as the music of an eclectic roster of artists who were all personally brought to the label by The Beatles (individually and/or collectively). In the revolutionary spirit of the times, Apple's utopian artist-orientated mission celebrated diversity in a friendly creative environment. The result was a rainbow spectrum of music, from folk, rock and soul to The Modern Jazz Quartet and the work of contemporary British classical composer John Tavener.

A very nice song from his 1968 Apple debut, and also my favorite. Taylor wrote it while overseas recording. He started writing the song at producer Peter Asher (former member of Peter And Gordon, and his sister, Jane was one of Paul McCartney's girlfriend's)'s London flat on Marylebone High Street, resumed work on it while on holiday on the Mediterranean island of Formentera, and then completed it while stranded on the nearby island of Ibiza with a Swedish girl Karin he had just met. The song reflects Taylor's homesickness at the time, as he was missing his family, his dog, and his state. Two of the Beatles worked with him on this song (Paul McCartney on bass, and an uncredited George Harrison on backing vocals). Sadly, the song only charted at #67 on the US charts.
Due to difficulty of getting the licensing rights to the original, James re-recorded the song for his 1976 Greatest Hits album, with professional California musicians, a slower tempo, and a simpler bass. That version becaome the most famous. Strongly tied to a sense of geographic place, "Carolina in My Mind" has been called an unofficial state anthem for North Carolina. It is also an unofficial song of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (I'd also like to mention that his father was a professor there. Go Duke!), being played at athletic events and pep rallies and sung by the graduating class at every university commencement. The association of the song with the state is also made in written works of both fiction and non-fiction. It has become one of Taylor's most critically praised songs and one that has great popularity and significance for his audience.

In 1968, James Taylor signed a contract with the Beatles' burgeoning record label, Apple, making his self-titled debut LP the company's first release from a non-British artist. He says, "It was really the epitome of being in the right place at the right time." Taylor performed "Something In the Way She Moves" – he calls, "the best song he had at the time" – with little mental preparation. He said,"I wouldn't have slept for a week if it had been a week ahead."

Written by John as an expression of his love for Yoko Ono, the song is heartfelt and passionate. As John told Rolling Stone magazine in 1970, “When it gets down to it, when you’re drowning, you don’t say, ‘I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,’ you just scream.”
During filming on the roof of Apple, two days after the recording of the track, the band played ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ right after doing two versions of 'Get Back’ and it led straight into 'I’ve Got A Feeling’. Michael Lindsay-Hogg was once again directing a Beatles’ shoot. He and Paul met regularly at the tail end of 1968, while Hogg was directing The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, to discuss the filming of The Beatles’ session in January. By the time that fateful Thursday came around, the penultimate day of January would be the last time The Beatles ever played together in front of any kind of audience.
This is not the version of ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ heard on the single but the version from the Let It Be… Naked album – a composite of both versions that were performed on the roof of Apple in Savile Row

Apple Records is a record label founded by The Beatles in 1968, as a division of Apple Corps Ltd. It was initially intended as a creative outlet for the Beatles, both as a group and individually, plus a selection of other artists including Mary Hopkin, James Taylor, Badfinger, and Billy Preston. In practice, by the mid-1970s, the roster had become dominated with releases by the former Beatles as solo artists. Allen Klein ran the label in 1969. It was then run by Neil Aspinall on behalf of the four Beatles and their heirs. He retired in 2007 and was replaced by Jeff Jones.
Apple Corps was conceived by Brian Epstein and the band by 1967 when they had released their Magical Mystery Tour film under their new Apple Films division. Apple Records was officially founded by the group after their return from India in 1968, as another sub-division of Apple Corps, which was established as a small group of companies (Apple Retail, Apple Publishing, Apple Electronics and so on), as part of Epstein's plan to create a tax-effective business structure.

James Taylor - Carolina In My Mind (Original 1968 Apple Records Version)
A very nice song from his 1968 Apple debut, and also my favorite. Taylor wrote it while overseas recording. He started writing the song at producer Peter Asher (former member of Peter And Gordon, and his sister, Jane was one of Paul McCartney's girlfriend's)'s London flat on Marylebone High Street, resumed work on it while on holiday on the Mediterranean island of Formentera, and then completed it while stranded on the nearby island of Ibiza with a Swedish girl Karin he had just met. The song reflects Taylor's homesickness at the time, as he was missing his family, his dog, and his state. Two of the Beatles worked with him on this song (Paul McCartney on bass, and an uncredited George Harrison on backing vocals). Sadly, the song only charted at #67 on the US charts. In 1968, James Taylor signed a contract with the Beatles' burgeoning record label, Apple, making his self-titled debut LP the company's first release from a non-British artist. He says, "It was really the epitome of being in the right place at the right time." It is also an unofficial song of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (I'd also like to mention that his father was a professor there. Go Duke!), being played at athletic events and pep rallies and sung by the graduating class at every university commencement. The association of the song with the state is also made in written works of both fiction and non-fiction. It has become one of Taylor's most critically praised songs and one that has great popularity and significance for his audience.

Written by John as an expression of his love for Yoko Ono, the song is heartfelt and passionate. As John told Rolling Stone magazine in 1970, “When it gets down to it, when you’re drowning, you don’t say, ‘I would be incredibly pleased if someone would have the foresight to notice me drowning and come and help me,’ you just scream.”
During filming on the roof of Apple, two days after the recording of the track, the band played ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ right after doing two versions of 'Get Back’ and it led straight into 'I’ve Got A Feeling’. Michael Lindsay-Hogg was once again directing a Beatles’ shoot. He and Paul met regularly at the tail end of 1968, while Hogg was directing The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, to discuss the filming of The Beatles’ session in January. By the time that fateful Thursday came around, the penultimate day of January would be the last time The Beatles ever played together in front of any kind of audience.
This is not the version of ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ heard on the single but the version from the Let It Be… Naked album – a composite of both versions that were performed on the roof of Apple in Savile Row
