Illinois militia catch up with retreating Sauk Indians. Forced off their land near Rockford, the Sauk offer a white flag of surrender at the Bad Axe River in Vernon County, Wisconsin. A militia commander records his impressions: (quote) "As we neared them they raised a white flag & endeavored to decoy us, but we were a little too old for them." The militia disregards the surrender attempt, & slaughter nearly the entire group, including women & children. A captured Chief Black Hawk offers a surrender speech (quote):

The State of Wisconsin refuses to apologize for the massacre until 1990.

1862 -- Cuba: Fernando Tarrida del Marmol lives (1862-1915), Santiago. Militant & anarquista theoretician, Spanish free-thinker.

Son of Catalan emigrants, he moved to Spain for his education, becoming an anarchist after meeting Anselmo Lorenzo. Became Director of the Polytechnic Academy of Barcelona. Arrested during the terror of the Clerics & military, his family was able to pull strings to gain his release. Hounded & in fear for his life, he went to England where he lodged with Kropotkin & Louise Michel.

Contributed articles to the international anarchist press, the avant-garde literary journal "La Revue Blanche" translator of Tolstoï; author of Anarquía, ateísmo y colectivismo (1885); Anselmo Lorenzo. Il n’est donc pas étonnant qu’ « en Macédoine, il y avait une influence particulièrement forte des populistes russes et des anarchistes, dont la vision était partagée par la plupart de la jeunesse étudiante macédonienne. » (2). L’adoption de l’action directe révolutionnaire et le refus des Etats ne pouvaient qu’attirer les anarchistes. Et dès 1895, de nombreux anarchistes bulgares se mêlèrent aux révolutionnaires macédoniens, dont le mot d’ordre était : « Libération de la Macédoine par l’insurrection dans tout le pays. », selon les paroles d’un des leaders les plus connus Gotse Deltchev (3).

If the Marxists were indifferent to the Macedonian question, there was an exception with Vassil Glavinov which shared the revolutionary sights of an autonomy obtained by the armed struggle. It is thus not astonishing that “in Macedonia, there were a particularly strong influence of populist Russian & anarchists, whose vision was shared by the majority of youth coed Macedonian. ” (2). The adoption of the revolutionary direct action & the refusal of the States could only attract the anarchists. & since 1895, with many Bulgarian anarchists mixed with the revolutionists Macedonians, whose watchword was: “Release of Macedonia by the insurrection in all the country. ”, according to the words of one of the most known leaders Gotse Deltchev (3).

Stanja est une région de la Thrace qui pendant une vingtaine de jours vit ses villages qui s’organisaient spontanément en communes sans argent ni propriété. « La population exprimait sa joie, dans les villages on dansait, on offrait des repas. Il n’existait plus « le tien-mien » : dans les forêts (...) nous avions des dépôts préparés ; toute la récolte était stockée en grains et en farine, dans des greniers et des dépôts communs. Le bétail était également possession commune. » Ces paroles du responsable militaire et organisationnel de l’insurrection, Mikhaïl Guerdjikov, anarchiste comme une partie des révolutionnaires, sont un des rares témoignages sur ce que l’histoire bulgare appelle « la république de Stranja » (8). Ce mouvement révolutionnaire autogestionnaire fit brisé par la répression turque. Des dizaines de milliers de personnes se réfugièrent en Bulgarie. Cependant, il avait démontré qu’une masse majoritairement paysanne, ethniquement composite, peut être unie et conscientisée de manière révolutionnaire par une tactique d’action directe et de mesures socialistes profondes (sans préparation d’un parti ni période transitoire). C’est ce qu’on retrouve également dans l’Ukraine de 1917-1921 et l’Espagne -avec moins de problèmes ethniques- des années 30. On peut ajouter que l’autonomie était fondée sur la communauté de l’oppression, et non sur des justifications chauvines liées au passé. Le facteur linguistique était résolu par l’admission de plusieurs langues. Si ces critères étaient respectés aujourd’hui, bien des antagonismes officiels disparaîtraient.

Stanja is an area of Thrace which during a score of days saw its villages which spontaneously organized in communes without money nor property. “The population expressed its joy, in the villages one danced, one offered meals. There was not any more “the tien-mien”: in the forests (...) we had prepared deposits; all harvest was stored in grains & flour, in attics & joint filings. The cattle was also common possession. ” These words of the military & organisational person in charge for the insurrection, Mikhaïl Guerdjikov, anarchist like part of the revolutionists, are one of rare testimonys on what the Bulgarian history calls “the republic of Stranja” (8). This self-management revolutionary movement made broken by Turkish repression. Tens of thousands of people took refuge in Bulgaria. However, it had shown that a mass mainly country, ethniquement composite, can plain & be conscientisée in a revolutionary way by a tactic of direct action & socialist measurements major (without preparation of a limited party nor period). It is what one also finds in the Ukraine of 1917-1921 & Spain - with less ethniques- problems of the Thirties. One can add that autonomy was founded on the community of oppression, & not on chauvinistic justifications related to the past. The linguistic factor was solved by the admission of several languages. If these criteria were respected today, many official antagonisms would disappear.


1914 -- Japanese playwright & leader in the attempt to revitalize the post-WWII theater, Junji Kinoshita, lives, in Tokyo. Created a unique genre of "folk plays," Yuzuru (Twilight Crane, 1949) being an outstanding example, & plays Investigating the role of guilt, such as Kaeru Shoten (Ascension of the Frog, 1951) & Shimpan (The Judgement, 1970).

1922 -- Mécislas Charrier (1895-1922) dies, guillotinéd in Paris. French individualist & illégaliste. Raised until the age of five by the anarchist Mécislas Golberg (or Goldberg).

On July 25, 1921, Charrier & two accomplices attempted to rob the First Class travelers on the Paris-Marseilles train, but things went badly & a person was killed. Afterwards in Paris, he was arrested, & his accomplices were killed by the police. Charrier went on trial on April 28, 1922. Mécislas, while not the killer, argues before the court his anarchist illegalism & defies it to take his head.

The court obliges, sending to the guillotine a simple idealistic robber.

At four o'clock in the morning, he approaches death in song, singing "l'Internationale," "L'hymne au 17e" & "La Carmagnole."

1924 -- James Baldwin lives, illegitimately, Harlem Hospital, NY City. American radical black queer essayist, novelist, & playwright, noted for his sharp works on black-white relations, civil-rights struggle, & gay issues, which fuse autobiographical material with social concerns.

Wrote Nobody Knows My Name; Another Country; Blues for Mister Charlie; A Rap on Race (with Margaret Mead).

Giovanni’s Room, focused on a homosexual relationship, interestingly enough between two white men. A number of publishers turned it down & Baldwin had to revise portions of it to get it published.

The FBI started a file on Baldwin after the novel Another Country in 1962. They further became interested after his 1963 meeting with the Kennedy brothers, where a number of emotional outbursts shaded his political opinions of them. Their file on him grew to 1,750 pages. Compare this to Sinclair Lewis’ 150 pages, Pearl Buck’s 280, & William Faulkner’s 18. They were afraid of Baldwin’s extreme popularity & influence in the 1960’s which was spurred by his connections to Martin Luther King, Jr., Elijah Muhammed & Malcolm X.

"When a negro becomes famous, he’s assumed by the bulk of those he helplessly represents to have become a whore... they’ll also feel that I made some kind of deal to have 'made it'." (June 16, 1963)

One of numerous black writers, such as Richard Wright, Chester Himes, who fled to Paris to escape American parochial & racial attitudes. He warns early on, in The Fire Next Time, that violence will result if white America does not change its attitudes toward black Americans. In his works from the 70s, after the failure of the civil rights movement & assassination of Martin Luther King, Baldwin started bitterly to acknowledge that violence may be the only route to racial justice.
