The Texass colony failed due to dissension & bad weather — a condition which prevails to this day.

The Illinois colony lasted 11 years, but because, partly, of the authoritarianism of Cabet, the community divided. One group remained with Cabet, who died in Saint Louis, Missouri on November 9, 1856 surrounded by the faithful. The other group settled in Iowa where the Icarienne community published two papers, including "The Communist-Libertarian."
