Agustin Gomez-Arcos

Often in winter the end of the day is like the final metaphor in a poem celebrating death: there is no way out.

— Agustin Gomez-Arcos, A Bird Burned Alive, 1988

Spanish anarchist/gay dramatist/novelist. Born in Almeria, Andalusia, 15 January 1939, died in Paris of cancer, 20 March 1998.

Gomez-Arcos is winner of the Prix Hermes and twice a finalist for the Prix Goncourt.

Because of censorship Gomez-Arcos took refuge in England, then Paris, where he wrote many novels about pro-Franco Spain: L'agneau carnivore (1975) (The Carnivorous Lamb, published in English, (Boston: D.R. Godine, 1984.) now out of print), Maria Republica (1976), Ana non (1977), L'enfant pain (1983), Un oiseau brûlé vif (1984).

The Carnivorous Lamb - Agustin Gomez-Arcos

The story of Ignacious, born at the height of Franco's rule of Spain. His parents refuse to acknowledge his existence so he is cared for by his brother, who becomes his mentor & eventual lover. The story follows the family through the struggles of the political & suffocating climate of the times. Well written - simultaneously funny, passionate & desperate. An unusual & fascinating book.
