A mortar and pestle is a device used since ancient times to prepare ingredients or substances by crushing and grinding them into a fine paste or powder. The mortar (/ˈmɔːrtər/) is a bowl, typically made of hard wood, ceramic or stone. The pestle (/ˈpɛsəl/) is a heavy and blunt club-shaped object, the end of which is used for crushing and grinding. The substance to be ground is placed in the mortar and ground, crushed or mixed using a pestle.
Mortars and pestles have been used in cooking up to the present day; they are frequently also associated with the profession of pharmacy due to their historical use in preparing medicines. They can also be used in masonry and in other types of construction.
Scientists have found ancient mortars and pestles that date back to approximately 35,000 B.C.
The English word mortar derives from classical Latin mortarium, meaning, among several other usages, "receptacle for pounding" and "product of grinding or pounding". The classical Latin pistillum, meaning "pounder", led to English pestle.

Hello there, Since I can remember I've always wanted to make a video with mortars, and after a few trials finally I made it happen. There are two types of mortars used in this video. The first one is made of wood and intended for grinding softer food, herbals etc. The second one is made of granite stone and it is supposed to be used for smashing harder grains or spices. If you don't find the sounds of grinding oatmeals and sunflower seeds very appealing I reccomend you to skip this part and try way softer sounds of smashing fruits in a wooden mortar. Using a granite mortar and pestle to turn freeze-dried strawberries into strawberry powder. In case you're curious, I used the powder to make strawberry macarons because the batter has to be relatively dry. Hope you like this video. Useful in the kitchen, and as beautiful as the stones you choose – how could you not want one of these? (I suspect they may make excellent chistmas presents too.) It would be easy to make a deeper hollow than I made – but I really don’t think it was necessary. Plus, it’s easier to clean when it’s shallow. Yes, this is a big heavy one – but if you want, just choose smaller stones. (Sorry, was that a bit obvious? But you wouldn’t believe some of the comments we get on our videos…) Copyright WayOutWest. Hello, my lovely friends and fellow Tingleheads :) I've got a new role play for you! It takes place at an herb store you've visited with a list of items you'd like to purchase. I demonstrate some of the practical uses of the herbs (such as grinding lavender for use in food, sampling an herbal lotion, burning sage, and brewing an herbal tea) and then package everything up for you. In this week's project video, I turn my woodturning attention to the kitchen and produce a modern take on a traditional culinary implement – The Pestle and Mortar. Turned from an 8x4" lump of beech, this winged project was great to turn and the end result is both a decorative piece for the kitchen, as well as a practical item. See Below for useful links to stuff used in this project. Hello guys, As I've already mentioned on my facebook it is one of the videos that I've always wanted to make, so it was particularly important for me to do it right and the best I can. Apart from two differently sounding pepper mills I decided to use mortars as well. One of them made of wood, and the second one of stone. To be honest I've never even used a mortar before, so I didn't know what I'm supposed to grind or smash in it. I simply bought some pepper, seeds, herbals, and fruits, and then I started hunting for the most relaxing sounds. With my eyes closed and the mortar next to my ear I was trying to grind all the products one by one. Finally I managed to choose: black pepper, linseed, some dried herbals, parsley, sunflower seeds, and bananas. In this video you can hear the final ...
In this video I show how I turn a mortar pestle made out of cedar. I am a self-taught carver and turner so you may see some things I do are not like most other turners. Like using a wood carving gouge tool to skew a smooth surface to the way I apply vegetable oil and shellac for my friction polish. This video also shows how to turn and join a unique top for your pestle to make it like no other. I use a high-speed method in the turning segments to keep the video moving along but still showing the details of the project. Thanks for watching. Happy turning. I hope you enjoy!
