The Iowa Pharmacy Board voted unanimously Wednesday (Feb. 17) to recommend the Legislature legalize marijuana for medical use in Iowa.
In a 6-0 vote Wednesday, the board also called for lawmakers to change the classification of marijuana to a Schedule II drug. Such drugs have the potential for abuse but also have accepted medical uses.
The boards action makes it the first in the nation to take such a stance on marijuana. There are now 14 states in which medical marijuana is legal.

The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was the first federal law that restricted cannabis, and hundreds of laws followed that ramped up the prohibition of a plant historically viewed as medicine. The Harrison Act, the Marihuana Tax Act and the Boggs Act all represent an escalation of the war against cannabis, but the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) is the federal law primarily enforcing the current prohibition. The CSA, prepared by Attorney General John Mitchell at the request of President Richard Nixon, was passed by the 91st U.S. Congress in 1970 and signed by Nixon. The law replaced the Marihuana Tax Act (deemed unconstitutional the year before by the Supreme Court), consolidated several other laws and expanded the federal government’s role in enforcing drug laws and prohibition. A few years later, Nixon created the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to serve as the lead agency enforcing drug laws and overseeing changes (along with the Food and Drug Administration) to the CSA’s five Schedules.
One of the most controversial aspects of the CSA was a Schedule I classification for cannabis and non-psychoactive hemp. This put cannabis in the same category as heroin, MDMA, mescaline and peyote—i.e., dangerous drugs of abuse with absolutely no medical value—suggesting the government deems cannabis to be worse than Schedule II drugs like crack cocaine, crystal meth and opium. Furthermore, the CSA made it a Class 1 federal felony for medical professionals and researchers to conduct legitimate studies on cannabis, which made it difficult to prove the safety and medical benefits of the plant that might justify a schedule change. Speaking of which, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) denied a petition to reschedule cannabis in 2001. The denial notice said that no evidence disputes the plant’s danger, abuse potential and lack of medical value.

I'm really sorry and disapointed too but the last three months have been very very complicated to manage with big changes in my life.

Once again I'm really sorry to be unable to keep my schedule. Life is tricky sometimes...

Drug prohibition law
Drug prohibition law is prohibition-based law by which governments prohibit, except under licence, the production, supply, and possession of many, but not all, substances which are recognized as drugs, and which corresponds to international treaty commitments in the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs 1961, the Convention on Psychotropic Substances 1971, and the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances 1988.
When produced, supplied or possessed under licence, otherwise prohibited drugs are known as controlled drugs. The aforementioned legislation is the cultural institution and social fact that de facto divides world drug trade as illegal vs legal, according to geopolitical issues. Schedule
A schedule or a timetable, as a basic time-management tool, consists of a list of times at which possible tasks, events, or actions are intended to take place, or of a sequence of events in the chronological order in which such things are intended to take place. The process of creating a schedule - deciding how to order these tasks and how to commit resources between the variety of possible tasks - is called scheduling, and a person responsible for making a particular schedule may be called a scheduler. Making and following schedules is an ancient human activity.
Some scenarios associate "this kind of planning" with learning "life skills". Schedules are necessary, or at least useful, in situations where individuals need to know what time they must be at a specific location to receive a specific service, and where people need to accomplish a set of goals within a set time period.
Schedules can usefully span both short periods, such as a daily or weekly schedule, and long-term planning with respect to periods of several months or years. They are often made using a calendar, where the person making the schedule can note the dates and times at which various events are planned to occur. Schedules that do not set forth specific times for events to occur may instead list algorithmically an expected order in which events either can or must take place.

This piece is all about DC at dusk and night -- concentrating on the monuments and historial buildings on the mall. During the making of this time-lapse, I was hassled/stopped 27 times by DC police and received 5 parking tickets. That's pretty much how it goes in DC. With help from my buddy Drew Breese, Russ Scalf, and a few unnamed sources we were able to complete this production... even if it was slightly behind schedule. It took nearly 3 months to film the sunsets -- since DC weather isn't always the best. For the production, I used a combination of standard frames, tone-mapping, and traditional HDR (on a few shots). It's quite the mixture. I hope you enjoy this piece and DC just as much as I do. Nowadays everyone has tight schedules, we managed to get everybody together for this special night shoot. We found the secret location in downtown LA, unloaded the truck, shot the video and got everyone back in time to do what they had to do. We handed the film off to Joe Dietsch, as you can see he did his thing and he we are with an alternate version to "Saturday Night" on Travis Barker's album ft. Transplants and Slash. In a 6-0 vote Wednesday, the board also called for lawmakers to change the classification of marijuana to a Schedule II drug. Such drugs have the potential for abuse but also have accepted medical uses.

This piece is all about DC at dusk and night -- concentrating on the monuments and historial buildings on the mall. During the making of this time-lapse, I was hassled/stopped 27 times by DC police and received 5 parking tickets. That's pretty much how it goes in DC.
With help from my buddy Drew Breese, Russ Scalf, and a few unnamed sources we were able to complete this production... even if it was slightly behind schedule. It took nearly 3 months to film the sunsets -- since DC weather isn't always the best.
For the production, I used a combination of standard frames, tone-mapping, and traditional HDR (on a few shots). It's quite the mixture.
I hope you enjoy this piece and DC just as much as I do.

k where do i begin?!!
this summer has been incredibly busy, from vancouver, to miami, to sydney, to hawaii, to niagara falls (haha k this is only a 200km drive) shooting weddings, teaching workshops, shooting corporate promos + commercials and of course shooting more weddings.
things are taking longer then expected but b4 i launch my website + 2010 highlights; i want to quickly share with you the first ever myw multi day south asian wedding that i attended this past weekend.
while i've had the oppurtunity to shoot hindu and sikh indian weddings in the past this was the first time i've shot a 5 day (yes 5 day) Ismaili wedding; and i sure had a TON of learning to do. I was up with farzana + shameer @ their place (luckly they live 2 mins away from me!! hehe) till 5 am, after a 4 hour pre-wedding consultation to learn exactly all of the different rituals, ceremonies, scarves, certain drinks that have cultural/religious/mythological significance to them and their culture. needless to say my head pretty much exploded but i was pumpppppeed to make this happen.
and while its hard to not notice, farzana + shameer are obviously a stunning looking couple, but they are also super warm, down to earth, approachable, caring and just all around awesome!!! their bridal party, friends and family were supppper amazing as well.
i REALALLLLLLYY love you guys!!! thank you for having me document your wedding.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
- being a multi-day event requiring many symmetrical ceremonies happening @ the same time, I contracted my internationally acclaimed wedding cinematographer/educator/best friend konrad czystowski to help me shoot the events that i couldnt personally shoot myself due to logistical limitations. one of the most important lessons l learned from internationally acclaimed ray roman while teaching @ his workshop in miami a month ago; was that he stressed how important it is to build solid relationships with great, honest and genuine ppl who can help us in our journey in this industry. in turn, konrad brings me to shoot a wedding with him in hawaii... WOOHOO!!!
now to give you an idea of how much work was involved in this weddng, here is a breakdown.
-WEDNESDAY henna ceremony - shot by myw + 1 5D mkii. the ceremony was 6 hours.
-THURSDAY henna ceremony for the bridesmaids + women from the grooms side of the family. this is the day where the siblings of both the bride and groom goto the mosque and fill up the guri with holy water and bring it back home for the bride and groom to bathe in it. various other ceremonies (egging of the groom, eating of butter chicken (heheh), more to be explained below) also occur on thursday as well. i would say this was another 7 hours or so. both Konrad and myself used one Canon 5D mkII to cover everything. konrad @ groom's house while I was at the brides.
-FRIDAY this was the day the bride and groom, as well as both their respective families get to finally meet and see eachother, this was @ a reception gathering. I shot this mostly myself with Konrad helping out for 3 hours. Total amount of time I would say I was shooting on and off was another 10 hours.
-SATURDAY this was the break day where no shooting was involved and I basically went through a good 30 hours of footage and edited + transcoded between multiple machines straight an entire day (and night). Konrad's pre sequenced and rough-cut timelines were a huge help in making this possible.
-SUNDAY I marched on the big wedding day on SUNDAY without a single second of sleep. Yes I almost cried in agony from editing during the middle of the night. Nevertheless, Konrad was at my house 7:45am, and the worlds busiest/most talented 16 year old boy wonder cinematographer Mark Klassen arrived too, and my trusty protege from scratch and Troy Turgano also helped with the editing duties all day. This wedding day ran from 8 am to about 1am, and had 2 sets of preps, 2 first meetings, 2 photosessions, 1 wedding ceremony and 1 wedding reception.
this piece was shot entirely with Canon 5DmkII's in 24p mode.
there is no doubt that the 5Dmkii currently provides the highest value/dollar HDSLR in event filmmaking industry today. it is better then the 7D due to it's full frame capabilities, cleaner low light and richer color reproduction. when i compare the 5d to the 1dmk4; I do notice that the 1dmk4 is better in low light, and the 1dmk4's crop factor is better in certain cases (removing mild vignetting in some lenses as well as removing the less sharp image characteristics @ the edges of an image); but for the price of a single 1dmk4, i can purchases 2 5dmkii's. it's a complete no brainer.

here is what ive always believed should define a wedding film.
its very simple actually.
the couple, their families+firends, and what they go thru and feel during this once in a lifetime day.
and while i was blessed to have shot this film within a magical city in mexico, i feel it is important to perhaps touch on the location and all the little events that go on during the day; but to not get too carried away.
to me, the focus and pull of the film should always be driven and to travel alongside the journey with the bride and groom.
TECHNICAL TIDBITS

- shot with 2 Canon 7ds + 1 Canon 5DmkII (3 cameras in total).
- 24p for the 7ds, 30p on the 5d converted progressively to 24p using a 1:1 frame re-map that allows the conversion to be 100% CLEAN with no articulating slows it down to look as though the footage was shot @ 36p.
- lenses mainly used were zeiss zf 35, zeiss zf 50 1.4 (now replaced with zeiss zf 20 makro), zeiss makro 100 zf, a few canon 70-200 2.8 IS, while the ultra sharp main ceremony camera was canon 2.8 L prime (awesome lens).
i have been already getting emails re zeiss glass, and i would say that for HDSLR cinema, they are the best bang for the buck and provide the best value/dollar. if you're unsure try an entry level zeiss 35 f2.0 and compare to its canon + nikon counterparts, and then you decide. every cinematographer i have talked to in the past 9 months have did this exact thing, and kept the ziess :) .
Keep in mind that the zeiss ze zf and zf.2 houses the EXACT same optics as the zeiss compact primes that go for $4000 per lens.
- photosession + reception stabilization provided via cinevate atlas 30 + steadicam pilot + 5dmkII + 24 1.4 (now replaced with zeiss zf 21) while ceremony steadicam pilot setup was 5dmkII + 16-35 (now replaced via canon 14L rectilinear).
the ceremony was VERY VERY windy as it was near the beach
- other stabilzation used was cinevate atlas30 + manfrotto 561 monopods.
-audio is all double system, the 25$ fuzzies on the lavalier mics went a long way to save the sound from being unusable from all the wind noise.
GOOFS - i went against the rules that i teach and swear by, hence there is a cameo of me in this piece (i didnt want to waste the shot)... let me know if you can point it out!
oh one last thing...
after all these years, i finally FINALLY got the epic crane processional shot that ive always dreamt of when i first picked up a camera and shot my first wedding.

Pre-production is by far the most important part of the process for not only time-lapse photography but film-making as a whole. By being prepared from the beginning and by having a well laid out plan, production & post-production will ALWAYS go way smoother. There are a few specific areas that I will be investigating as part of the pre-production phase. I will be covering:
• Story
• Scheduling
• Scouting
What I want to do with this video is give you a few tips that will hopefully help your shooting experience go smoother. To help with this process, I will be producing a new short at the same time and use it as a real world example showcasing my workflow.

Tutorial Technical Specs
For this tutorial, my gear selection was a little different from my other projects because of the location in which I was shooting. Due to the fact that I hiked in to film this, I had to condense my kit. In regards to cameras, I shot on 2xCanon 5D Mark II’s using the 24-105mm 4.0L, 14mm 2.8L, 50mm 1.2L, and the 70-200mm 2.8L II. In regards to sound, I used the RØDE Lavalier for the on camera content and the NTG3 for the SFX / Ambient audio.
In regards to support gear, I used the Manfrotto 055 Carbon Fiber Tripod – 3 Section tripods with Kessler Low Profile Ball Heads & Kwik Release plates to attach the cameras. For the drive lapse shots, I used the Kessler Shuttle Pod Mini, Kessler Stealth & the Shape Mountains.

There are a few specific areas that I will be investigating as part of the pre-production phase. I will be covering:

• Scheduling
• Scouting
What I want to do with this video is give you a few tips that will hopefully help your shooting experience go smoother. To help with this process, I will be producing a new short at the same time and use it as a real world example showcasing my workflow.

Tutorial Technical Specs
For this tutorial, my gear selection was a little different from my other projects because of the location in which I was shooting. Due to the fact that I hiked in to film this, I had to condense my kit. In regards to cameras, I shot on 2xCanon 5D Mark II’s using the 24-105mm 4.0L, 14mm 2.8L, 50mm 1.2L, and the 70-200mm 2.8L II. In regards to sound, I used the RØDE Lavalier for the on camera content and the NTG3 for the SFX / Ambient audio.
In regards to support gear, I used the Manfrotto 055 Carbon Fiber Tripod – 3 Section tripods with Kessler Low Profile Ball Heads & Kwik Release plates to attach the cameras. For the drive lapse shots, I used the Kessler Shuttle Pod Mini, Kessler Stealth & the Shape Mountains.

The installations at AfrikaBurn usually have quite a short lifetime and with the huge amount of effort that is put into the planning, fundraising, building and eventual burning of these art pieces, we decided quite early on that this is what we wanted our film to focus on.
Tankwa Town was our home for a total of 8 days as we formed part of The Toy Box campsite. We arrived 3 days prior to the start of the burn and found that not many of the installations were completed at this point. We spent the mornings shooting sunrises over the few installations that were completed and spent the days building geodesic domes, laying down colourful carpets and rigging lights and sound with friends and Toy Box leaders Andrew Wood and Travis Hyde.
We had no schedule as we decided to simply shoot when it felt right to do so. It was Rory's second burn and my first and in order to experience it properly, we decided to let the festival dictate the schedule to us. Each day saw at least a few hours of shooting, except for the Friday, our only official day off, and over the 5 day festival Rory managed to shoot nearly 50 timelapses.
Unfortunately on the Saturday evening, the night of the main burn, we managed to loose a ziplock bag with 6 cards of footage. The cards contained a mass of footage, including most of the main burns and some day time installations. We spoke to everyone we could at the burn, posted all over social media and while everyone has been super helpful in getting the word out, the cards never managed to find their way back to us. We figure that someone without knowledge of what the cards were thought the bag was moop (matter out of place) and discarded it as rubbish.
While this severely affected our film we decided to put the edit out anyway. If the cards ever do turn up by some miracle, we may consider recutting the film but for now, this is our gift to all burners, especially the ones who built, burned and brought back x

Iowa board call for classification of marijuana as a Schedule II drug
The Iowa Pharmacy Board voted unanimously Wednesday (Feb. 17) to recommend the Legislature legalize marijuana for medical use in Iowa. In a 6-0 vote Wednesday, the board also called for lawmakers to change the classification of marijuana to a Schedule II drug. Such drugs have the potential for abuse but also have accepted medical uses. The boards action makes it the first in the nation to take such a stance on marijuana. There are now 14 states in which medical marijuana is legal.

The Controlled Substances Act
The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was the first federal law that restricted cannabis, and hundreds of laws followed that ramped up the prohibition of a plant historically viewed as medicine. The Iowa Pharmacy Board voted unanimously Wednesday (Feb. 17) to recommend the Legislature legalize marijuana for medical use in Iowa.
In a 6-0 vote Wednesday, the board also called for lawmakers to change the classification of marijuana to a Schedule II drug. Such drugs have the potential for abuse but also have accepted medical uses.
The boards action makes it the first in the nation to take such a stance on marijuana. There are now 14 states in which medical marijuana is legal.

The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was the first federal law that restricted cannabis, and hundreds of laws followed that ramped up the prohibition of a plant historically viewed as medicine. The Harrison Act, the Marihuana Tax Act and the Boggs Act all represent an escalation of the war against cannabis, but the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) is the federal law primarily enforcing the current prohibition. The CSA, prepared by Attorney General John Mitchell at the request of President Richard Nixon, was passed by the 91st U.S. Congress in 1970 and signed by Nixon. The law replaced the Marihuana Tax Act (deemed unconstitutional the year before by the Supreme Court), consolidated several other laws and expanded the federal government’s role in enforcing drug laws and prohibition. A few years later, Nixon created the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to serve as the lead agency enforcing drug laws and overseeing changes (along with the Food and Drug Administration) to the CSA’s five Schedules.
One of the most controversial aspects of the CSA was a Schedule I classification for cannabis and non-psychoactive hemp. This put cannabis in the same category as heroin, MDMA, mescaline and peyote—i.e., dangerous drugs of abuse with absolutely no medical value—suggesting the government deems cannabis to be worse than Schedule II drugs like crack cocaine, crystal meth and opium. This piece is all about DC at dusk and night -- concentrating on the monuments and historial buildings on the mall. During the making of this time-lapse, I was hassled/stopped 27 times by DC police and received 5 parking tickets. That's pretty much how it goes in DC.
With help from my buddy Drew Breese, Russ Scalf, and a few unnamed sources we were able to complete this production... even if it was slightly behind schedule. It took nearly 3 months to film the sunsets -- since DC weather isn't always the best.
For the production, I used a combination of standard frames, tone-mapping, and traditional HDR (on a few shots). It's quite the mixture.
I hope you enjoy this piece and DC just as much as I do.

k where do i begin?!!
this summer has been incredibly busy, from vancouver, to miami, to sydney, to hawaii, to niagara falls (haha k this is only a 200km drive) shooting weddings, teaching workshops, shooting corporate promos + commercials and of course shooting more weddings.
things are taking longer then expected but b4 i launch my website + 2010 highlights; i want to quickly share with you the first ever myw multi day south asian wedding that i attended this past weekend.
while i've had the oppurtunity to shoot hindu and sikh indian weddings in the past this was the first time i've shot a 5 day (yes 5 day) Ismaili wedding; and i sure had a TON of learning to do. I was up with farzana + shameer @ their place (luckly they live 2 mins away from me!! hehe) till 5 am, after a 4 hour pre-wedding consultation to learn exactly all of the different rituals, ceremonies, scarves, certain drinks that have cultural/religious/mythological significance to them and their culture. needless to say my head pretty much exploded but i was pumpppppeed to make this happen.
and while its hard to not notice, farzana + shameer are obviously a stunning looking couple, but they are also super warm, down to earth, approachable, caring and just all around awesome!!! their bridal party, friends and family were supppper amazing as well.

TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
- being a multi-day event requiring many symmetrical ceremonies happening @ the same time, I contracted my internationally acclaimed wedding cinematographer/educator/best friend konrad czystowski to help me shoot the events that i couldnt personally shoot myself due to logistical limitations. one of the most important lessons l learned from internationally acclaimed ray roman while teaching @ his workshop in miami a month ago; was that he stressed how important it is to build solid relationships with great, honest and genuine ppl who can help us in our journey in this industry. in turn, konrad brings me to shoot a wedding with him in hawaii... WOOHOO!!!
now to give you an idea of how much work was involved in this weddng, here is a breakdown.
-WEDNESDAY henna ceremony - shot by myw + 1 5D mkii. the ceremony was 6 hours.
-THURSDAY henna ceremony for the bridesmaids + women from the grooms side of the family. this is the day where the siblings of both the bride and groom goto the mosque and fill up the guri with holy water and bring it back home for the bride and groom to bathe in it. various other ceremonies (egging of the groom, eating of butter chicken (heheh), more to be explained below) also occur on thursday as well. i would say this was another 7 hours or so. both Konrad and myself used one Canon 5D mkII to cover everything. konrad @ groom's house while I was at the brides.
-FRIDAY this was the day the bride and groom, as well as both their respective families get to finally meet and see eachother, this was @ a reception gathering. I shot this mostly myself with Konrad helping out for 3 hours. Total amount of time I would say I was shooting on and off was another 10 hours.
-SATURDAY this was the break day where no shooting was involved and I basically went through a good 30 hours of footage and edited + transcoded between multiple machines straight an entire day (and night). Konrad's pre sequenced and rough-cut timelines were a huge help in making this possible.
-SUNDAY I marched on the big wedding day on SUNDAY without a single second of sleep. Yes I almost cried in agony from editing during the middle of the night. Nevertheless, Konrad was at my house 7:45am, and the worlds busiest/most talented 16 year old boy wonder cinematographer Mark Klassen arrived too, and my trusty protege from scratch and Troy Turgano also helped with the editing duties all day. This wedding day ran from 8 am to about 1am, and had 2 sets of preps, 2 first meetings, 2 photosessions, 1 wedding ceremony and 1 wedding reception.
this piece was shot entirely with Canon 5DmkII's in 24p mode.
there is no doubt that the 5Dmkii currently provides the highest value/dollar HDSLR in event filmmaking industry today. it is better then the 7D due to it's full frame capabilities, cleaner low light and richer color reproduction. when i compare the 5d to the 1dmk4; I do notice that the 1dmk4 is better in low light, and the 1dmk4's crop factor is better in certain cases (removing mild vignetting in some lenses as well as removing the less sharp image characteristics @ the edges of an image); but for the price of a single 1dmk4, i can purchases 2 5dmkii's. it's a complete no brainer.

things are taking longer then expected but b4 i launch my website + 2010 highlights; i want to quickly share with you the first ever myw multi day south asian wedding that i attended this past weekend.
while i've had the oppurtunity to shoot hindu and sikh indian weddings in the past this was the first time i've shot a 5 day (yes 5 day) Ismaili wedding; and i sure had a TON of learning to do. I was up with farzana + shameer @ their place (luckly they live 2 mins away from me!! hehe) till 5 am, after a 4 hour pre-wedding consultation to learn exactly all of the different rituals, ceremonies, scarves, certain drinks that have cultural/religious/mythological significance to them and their culture. needless to say my head pretty much exploded but i was pumpppppeed to make this happen.
and while its hard to not notice, farzana + shameer are obviously a stunning looking couple, but they are also super warm, down to earth, approachable, caring and just all around awesome!!! their bridal party, friends and family were supppper amazing as well.
i REALALLLLLLYY love you guys!!! thank you for having me document your wedding.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
- being a multi-day event requiring many symmetrical ceremonies happening @ the same time, I contracted my internationally acclaimed wedding cinematographer/educator/best friend konrad czystowski to help me shoot the events that i couldnt personally shoot myself due to logistical limitations. one of the most important lessons l learned from internationally acclaimed ray roman while teaching @ his workshop in miami a month ago; was that he stressed how important it is to build solid relationships with great, honest and genuine ppl who can help us in our journey in this industry. in turn, konrad brings me to shoot a wedding with him in hawaii... WOOHOO!!!
now to give you an idea of how much work was involved in this weddng, here is a breakdown.
-WEDNESDAY henna ceremony - shot by myw + 1 5D mkii. the ceremony was 6 hours.
-THURSDAY henna ceremony for the bridesmaids + women from the grooms side of the family. this is the day where the siblings of both the bride and groom goto the mosque and fill up the guri with holy water and bring it back home for the bride and groom to bathe in it. various other ceremonies (egging of the groom, eating of butter chicken (heheh), more to be explained below) also occur on thursday as well. i would say this was another 7 hours or so. both Konrad and myself used one Canon 5D mkII to cover everything. konrad @ groom's house while I was at the brides.
-FRIDAY this was the day the bride and groom, as well as both their respective families get to finally meet and see eachother, this was @ a reception gathering. I shot this mostly myself with Konrad helping out for 3 hours. Total amount of time I would say I was shooting on and off was another 10 hours.
-SATURDAY this was the break day where no shooting was involved and I basically went through a good 30 hours of footage and edited + transcoded between multiple machines straight an entire day (and night). Konrad's pre sequenced and rough-cut timelines were a huge help in making this possible.
-SUNDAY I marched on the big wedding day on SUNDAY without a single second of sleep. Yes I almost cried in agony from editing during the middle of the night. Nevertheless, Konrad was at my house 7:45am, and the worlds busiest/most talented 16 year old boy wonder cinematographer Mark Klassen arrived too, and my trusty protege from scratch and Troy Turgano also helped with the editing duties all day. This wedding day ran from 8 am to about 1am, and had 2 sets of preps, 2 first meetings, 2 photosessions, 1 wedding ceremony and 1 wedding reception.
this piece was shot entirely with Canon 5DmkII's in 24p mode.
there is no doubt that the 5Dmkii currently provides the highest value/dollar HDSLR in event filmmaking industry today. it is better then the 7D due to it's full frame capabilities, cleaner low light and richer color reproduction. when i compare the 5d to the 1dmk4; I do notice that the 1dmk4 is better in low light, and the 1dmk4's crop factor is better in certain cases (removing mild vignetting in some lenses as well as removing the less sharp image characteristics @ the edges of an image); but for the price of a single 1dmk4, i can purchases 2 5dmkii's. it's a complete no brainer.

the couple, their families+firends, and what they go thru and feel during this once in a lifetime day.
and while i was blessed to have shot this film within a magical city in mexico, i feel it is important to perhaps touch on the location and all the little events that go on during the day; but to not get too carried away.
to me, the focus and pull of the film should always be driven and to travel alongside the journey with the bride and groom.
TECHNICAL TIDBITS

- shot with 2 Canon 7ds + 1 Canon 5DmkII (3 cameras in total).
- 24p for the 7ds, 30p on the 5d converted progressively to 24p using a 1:1 frame re-map that allows the conversion to be 100% CLEAN with no articulating slows it down to look as though the footage was shot @ 36p.
- lenses mainly used were zeiss zf 35, zeiss zf 50 1.4 (now replaced with zeiss zf 20 makro), zeiss makro 100 zf, a few canon 70-200 2.8 IS, while the ultra sharp main ceremony camera was canon 2.8 L prime (awesome lens).
i have been already getting emails re zeiss glass, and i would say that for HDSLR cinema, they are the best bang for the buck and provide the best value/dollar. if you're unsure try an entry level zeiss 35 f2.0 and compare to its canon + nikon counterparts, and then you decide. every cinematographer i have talked to in the past 9 months have did this exact thing, and kept the ziess :) .
Keep in mind that the zeiss ze zf and zf.2 houses the EXACT same optics as the zeiss compact primes that go for $4000 per lens.
- photosession + reception stabilization provided via cinevate atlas 30 + steadicam pilot + 5dmkII + 24 1.4 (now replaced with zeiss zf 21) while ceremony steadicam pilot setup was 5dmkII + 16-35 (now replaced via canon 14L rectilinear).
the ceremony was VERY VERY windy as it was near the beach
- other stabilzation used was cinevate atlas30 + manfrotto 561 monopods.
-audio is all double system, the 25$ fuzzies on the lavalier mics went a long way to save the sound from being unusable from all the wind noise.
GOOFS - i went against the rules that i teach and swear by, hence there is a cameo of me in this piece (i didnt want to waste the shot)... let me know if you can point it out!
oh one last thing...
after all these years, i finally FINALLY got the epic crane processional shot that ive always dreamt of when i first picked up a camera and shot my first wedding.

Pre-production is by far the most important part of the process for not only time-lapse photography but film-making as a whole. By being prepared from the beginning and by having a well laid out plan, production & post-production will ALWAYS go way smoother. There are a few specific areas that I will be investigating as part of the pre-production phase. I will be covering:
• Story
• Scheduling
• Scouting
What I want to do with this video is give you a few tips that will hopefully help your shooting experience go smoother. To help with this process, I will be producing a new short at the same time and use it as a real world example showcasing my workflow.

Tutorial Technical Specs
For this tutorial, my gear selection was a little different from my other projects because of the location in which I was shooting. Due to the fact that I hiked in to film this, I had to condense my kit. In regards to cameras, I shot on 2xCanon 5D Mark II’s using the 24-105mm 4.0L, 14mm 2.8L, 50mm 1.2L, and the 70-200mm 2.8L II. In regards to sound, I used the RØDE Lavalier for the on camera content and the NTG3 for the SFX / Ambient audio.
In regards to support gear, I used the Manfrotto 055 Carbon Fiber Tripod – 3 Section tripods with Kessler Low Profile Ball Heads & Kwik Release plates to attach the cameras. For the drive lapse shots, I used the Kessler Shuttle Pod Mini, Kessler Stealth & the Shape Mountains.

The installations at AfrikaBurn usually have quite a short lifetime and with the huge amount of effort that is put into the planning, fundraising, building and eventual burning of these art pieces, we decided quite early on that this is what we wanted our film to focus on.
Tankwa Town was our home for a total of 8 days as we formed part of The Toy Box campsite. We arrived 3 days prior to the start of the burn and found that not many of the installations were completed at this point. We spent the mornings shooting sunrises over the few installations that were completed and spent the days building geodesic domes, laying down colourful carpets and rigging lights and sound with friends and Toy Box leaders Andrew Wood and Travis Hyde.
We had no schedule as we decided to simply shoot when it felt right to do so. It was Rory's second burn and my first and in order to experience it properly, we decided to let the festival dictate the schedule to us. Each day saw at least a few hours of shooting, except for the Friday, our only official day off, and over the 5 day festival Rory managed to shoot nearly 50 timelapses.
Unfortunately on the Saturday evening, the night of the main burn, we managed to loose a ziplock bag with 6 cards of footage. The cards contained a mass of footage, including most of the main burns and some day time installations. We spoke to everyone we could at the burn, posted all over social media and while everyone has been super helpful in getting the word out, the cards never managed to find their way back to us. We figure that someone without knowledge of what the cards were thought the bag was moop (matter out of place) and discarded it as rubbish.
While this severely affected our film we decided to put the edit out anyway. If the cards ever do turn up by some miracle, we may consider recutting the film but for now, this is our gift to all burners, especially the ones who built, burned and brought back x
