One of the reasons Chiang Mai is such a popular base for expats is the food. From Thai to International and from street food to restaurants, Chiang Mai has more quality restaurants per capita than I've experienced in any other city in Thailand let alone any other country! Whether you're into fine International dining or strictly a vegetarian you'll find your fix in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The following is a travel food featuring local Thai food, Northern Thai cuisine, street food, International cuisine, Southeast Asian delights and vegetarian restaurants for all budgets from backpacker to flashpacker:

PAI: THE HIPPIE HILLSIDE TOWN IN NORTHERN THAILAND (ปาย)
As a vacation from our residence in Chiang Mai we decided to take a serpentine road trip to the hillside country town of Pai (ปาย) where relaxed, wandered around, enjoyed stunning scenery and visited a Hot Spring.
As we crammed into a over-capacity white minivan we began our journey to Pai which included a staggering 746 turns / curves in the road. I'm not normally the type to get sick on the road; however, I started to feel nauseous from the trip, so I ended up popping a couple of gravol pills to settle my stomach down.
For every twist and turn we encountered along the way we were rewarded as soon as we arrived in Pai where we instantly

Traveling Spoon, Chiang Mai, Thailand- Cooking With A Local
We spent a day with Nid from Traveling Spoon, a company that connects travelers with locals to get a true experience. Nid picked us up early in the morning in Chiang Mai and we headed to a local Thai market. After picking up fresh ingredients including Banana Flower, Pork, Old Style Coffee, and many other native Thai plants, we then headed to Nid's Parents farm in Lamphun, Thailand. On the farm we picked herbs and chilies to use in our cooking.
This was an awesome experience for anyone who wants to experience Thailand as a Thai does on a daily basis. We got to learn about fruits we've never seen before even after a year in Thailand.

Eating Thai Vegetarian Food at Pun Pun Restaurant at Wat Suan Dok in Chiang Mai, Thailand
At the recommendation of a friend, we visited Wat Suan Dok in Chiang Mai, Thailand to eat Thai vegetarian food at Pun Pun Restaurant (formerly and briefly known as Imm Aim) just outside of the Thai Buddhist temple grounds.
With an open air kitchen and self serve drinking water, we appreciated the simple decor and minimalist design.
The menu featured an array of vegetarian options (all very well priced) including Thai favorites, gourmand salads and International curries.
The hardest part for us was settling on a course of main dishes to sample. We ended up going with deep-fried spring rolls, mixed salad with cheese and a spicy coconut Indian curry with roti.
The spring rolls were the best we've had in Chiang Mai. Loaded with vegetables and spices they were done to perfection.
The mixed salad was a mountain full of various vegetables, beans and chunks of cheese. Again, this was pleasing to the palette.
Finally, the spicy Indian curry was made with a coconut base and had large chunks of assorted vegetables that we sopped up with wedges of roti flat bread.
Although we were stuffed we decided to order dessert: bananas in coconut milk pudding and honey ginger tea with wedges of sweet potato.
In total we paid 300 Baht (slight less than $10 USD) for two coconut shakes, three main dishes and two desserts. This was easily one of the best value Thai meals we've had since coming back to Chiang Mai.
My only regret is that we're leaving soon and that we may not have a chance to come back before we head on a slow boat bound for Luang Prabang, Laos.
Today we are at Wat Suan Dok and we hear there is an amazing restaurant on the temple grounds. It is called Imm Aim and it used to be called Pun Pun, so that is what we're searching for right now.
It is a vegetarian restaurant and it has come highly recommended from a friend but before we go have lunch we're going to go for a wander around the temple.
So far I'm kind of enjoying the minimal design here and they have a really cool outdoor open kitchen. You can see them preparing your food.
The do it yourself water reminds me a lot of being back in Korea where we used to eat at the Kimbap restaurants and we would go up and grab our own waters.
Our first dish has arrived - the vegetarian spring rolls. It is hot. I'm burning my mouth but this is really good. These are definitely some of the best spring rolls I've had here in Chiang Mai. Have a look inside. It has bean sprouts, glass noodles, some vegetables. It is really flavorful. They've added some nice spices in there.
There comes the rest of our food. It looks amazing. Let's get back to your spring roll. I got distracted there. Have a bite! Yeah, these are excellent. My favorite part about this is the tamarind dipping sauce. That is really unique and tangy.
The masterpiece of a salad has arrived. Ooh lah lah. What kind of sauce is that? I think it may be pumpkin based on the color. We'll see.
This is a really healthy salad. If you look over here you can see we have some green beans, red beans, corn and there is even some barley and of course we love cheese so we had to get some feta cheese on top. Only an extra 20 Baht. I would say it was well worth it. Oh, yes. How is it? That's wonderful. So good you've have three bites and I haven't had any.
We have a little taste of India happening over here. Indeed, we do. This here is a little bit of roti flat bread and this is the Indian curry. I don't really know what is in it so it'll be an interesting first bite. It is nice and thick. I can tell that. It looks like it has a lot of vegetables. That's wonderful. It has got a coconut base. It is spicy and yeah I can taste a lot of different vegetables in there.
That would be our dessert. This was listed as sweet potato honey. Sweet potato tea on the menu, so I was expecting a tea cup but apparently it is a dessert. Tea in a spoon. It tastes like ginger. That is ginger tea. That is not sweet potato.
This is my dessert which I'm kindly sharing with Sam. Oh, yeah, I don't recall that part of the deal. Anyways, we're having bananas with coconut milk and if you look down here you can see giant slabs of banana. I'm going to take one of those and make sure I've got lots of coconut milk too.
That is the face of satisfaction. Yeah?
That awesome feast came to 300 Baht which is 10 USD and that included two shakes, three main dishes and two desserts. That is a lot of food for ten dollars for two people.

30 Things to do in Thailand Travel Guide, Top Attractions & Thai Street Food
During our time backpacking and traveling around Asia we spent more time in Thailand than any other country in SE Asia and for good reason. Unlike most tourists who visit Thailand, we decided to skip most of the beaches located in the southern regions of the country and instead focus most of our time in Northern Thailand. Chiang Mai, our home away from home, became our base for several months and by the time we left we promised ourselves we'd return again in the near future. What makes Chiang Mai such a great base for foreigners? Firstly, it's cheap. You can find high quality serviced apartments for under $500 (some are less than $300) that offer modern amenities and are in located in close proximity to the old square of the city. Secondly, the food – both Thai and International – offers as much diverse selection as any city I've ever visited. If you want to gormandize on authentic Thai delights you'll have no shortage of options ranging from Thai street food to high class Thai restaurants. For the culture vulture, no shortage of opportunities exist to explore temples such as Doi Suthep, markets such as the Saturday night market or interact with animals such as at the Elephant Nature Park. When you get tired of Chiang Mai, the sleepy hillside town of Pai awaits where the pace is slower and you feel more like you're out in the countryside. Whether you love it or hate it, most journeys in Thailand begin and end in Bangkok. This steamy chaotic city offers some incredible temples to explore (such as Wat Arun and the Temple of the Mount) along with great shopping and nightlife. Restaurants in Chiang Mai | Thai Food Travel Guide
1) Many visit Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai for experiences other than food; however, for those who visit Wat Suan Dok nestled behind the temple is a great Thai vegetarian restaurant called Pun Pun (Imm Aim). We ordered vegetarian spring rolls, mixed salad, Indian roti and curry set along with a sticky coconut rice dessert - all were excellent!
2) Indulging in Northern Thai delicacies is an absolute must in Chiang Mai. The most famous of dishes, Khao Soi, is done to perfect at Peppermint cafe. With a coconut curry base, boiled and crispy noodles and select vegetables (meat or chicken is optional) its a signature dish you'll likely be having more than once. In many ways it is similar to Thai Massaman curry. On the plus side, it is one of the most inexpensive meals you can find in Northern Thailand coming in at around 30 to 60 Baht.
3) One simply cannot come to Chiang Mai and skip out on the Saturday Night market. We were just going to go for a walk but instead we ended up feasting on twist potatoes, blueberry cheesecake ice cream, pan-friend dumplings, dim sum, chocolate and banana roti, YES! We were full by the end but our wallets weren't stretched that much as Thai street food is inexpensive.
4) A proper Northern Thai meal is something called a Khantoke set meal. Always including sticky rice many different curries, pork sausage and pickled dishes are presented in wicker baskets to enjoy.
5) Not far from our Thai apartment is a wonderful night market specializing in Thai street food stalls. One of our favorites is yellow egg noodles with dumplings in a soup broth. So good, so cheap!
6) One of my favorite desserts in the world (not just in Thailand) is mango sticky rice with coconut milk drizzled over top. It's the kind of dish you'll want all to yourself as sharing means less bites for you ;)
7) When it comes to Thai street food the ubiquitous Thai banana chocolate pancake has been sustaining backpackers for decades. Popular for good reason this dish can be eaten as a snack, dessert or for breakfast.
8) Pad Thai, possibly the most over-rated Thai dish, well known around the world. It's worth trying (at a restaurant or on the street) but don't limit yourself to just having this kind of meal when in Thailand. You may be surprised to know that many Thais find it kind of bland and boring.
9) For the best vegetarian food in Chiang Mai head over to Salad Concept where you can create your own wraps and/or salads with a plethora of different fresh ingredients. It is popular with hipster Thais, so you know it is good.
10) Finally, if you're in the mood for Korean food be sure to check out Korea House for great Korean pancakes and Korean dumplings.
This video is for all of our Korean fans.
What are some of your favorite Thai foods? Did we cover your favorite restaurants in Chiang Mai? Where did we miss?

One of the reasons Chiang Mai is such a popular base for expats is the food. From Thai to International and from street food to restaurants, Chiang Mai has more quality restaurants per capita than I've experienced in any other city in Thailand let alone any other country! Whether you're into fine International dining or strictly a vegetarian you'll find your fix in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The following is a travel food featuring local Thai food, Northern Thai cuisine, street food, International cuisine, Southeast Asian delights and vegetarian restaurants for all budgets from backpacker to flashpacker:

For every twist and turn we encountered along the way we were rewarded as soon as we arrived in Pai where we instantly noticed the pace of life slowing down.
Our guest house was located in an idyllic setting which included hillside views, rice fields in our backyard and thatched bungalows. To keep us company three pet cats would often sleep beside us as we swung on a hammock and the adorable Pugsley, a cute pug (who is actually named Faye) would wander over to us looking up at us with his big eyes and wrinkly face.
The three days in Pai were spent mostly relaxing and chilling out. In fact, it's hard for me to fathom people coming to Pai and doing anything else but taking it easy.
The only thing I wish is that we had more time. If I ever base myself in Thailand again I think I'd prefer Pai over Chiang Mai to work on creative projects.
This is the hillside town of Pai. It is about 3.5 hours away from Chiang Mai and this is where we've been spending the weekend.
We are staying at the Pai Chan Cottages and this is our private little Bungalow, so let's go have a look inside.
Hey! Come on in! This is our humble little room here. You can see we've got a nice big size bed and mosquito net over here. Fortunately this time of the year we haven't had to be using it very often. It's freezing at night! It is freezing so likely the mosquitoes have all died. The best part about this place are the views. Check out this: rice fields!
Am I interrupting your nap? You're just too cute and wrinkly. Look at that little nose.
Meow meow!
We've only got a few days left here in Thailand and I've been hearing from friends raving about Pai for years and I've always put off coming here. This time I said 'There is no way we're going to leave Thailand without coming to Pai." Now I understand what all of the fuss is about. This place is wonderful. It is one of the most relaxing towns I've ever visited and we're going to show you around. You'll get to see first hand why we love it here.
What are you doing? I couldn't be anymore relaxed than in this hammock right now. At this rate, I don't even know if we're get into town.
One of the main reasons people come to Pai is to just relax and totally chill out. A lot of other destinations you go to visit temples, you go to do other types of things but here it is just enjoying the scenery, wandering around and swinging on a hammock. Those are the top things to do and I'm loving it so far.
We seem to have found hippy central just across the river. There is a cool little bar called sunset bar and it can be reached via a bamboo bridge. Shall we check it out?
That was awesome! We crossed that rickety old bridge and then we came to some really cool looking guesthouses and now we're here in the fields.
One of the draws to Pai is being able to explore the countryside. Yesterday, I rented my very first scouter. It only cost me three dollars a day and I got a helmet with that. It was a great way to explore. I thought it was going to be kind of tricky riding it for the first time but it was a lot of fun. You did well didn't you? It opened up a lot of the surrounding areas that would have been tough to reach by foot.
Aside from chilling out and relaxing in Pai one of the few things that we actually really want to do is to take a trip over and visit the hot springs.
We're here in Pai visiting the hot springs. This is the thirty five degree pool and I'm swinging like Tarzan. Well not exactly but I'd like to think that. Oooh Oooh Oooh!
That giant white Buddha over there is something I plan on visiting tomorrow morning when I wake up.
I can't swing. I need an assistant to swing me. Sam, come swing me! I'm just kidding. I'm kidding! No, Sam. Sam no! Oh, my gosh! What are you doing? Okay, I just want to get you on the hammock. I don't want to go flying! No. Okay, just go back on and say something.
Go fetch me a drink!

The following is a top attractions travel guide offering a snapshot of the best things to do in Thailand during your next vacation to Land of Smiles:

One of the reasons Chiang Mai is such a popular base for expats is the food. From Thai to International and from street food to restaurants, Chiang Mai has more quality restaurants per capita than I've experienced in any other city in Thailand let alone any other country! Whether you're into fine International dining or strictly a vegetarian you'll find your fix in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The following is a travel food featuring local Thai food, Northern Thai cuisine, street food, International cuisine, Southeast Asian delights and vegetarian restaurants for all budgets from backpacker to flashpacker:

The PunPun is a Vegetarian place that makes delicious salads and Vegetarian entres that Hygienic Ethical Vegans must constantly ask to have altered by asking for things to be ommitted, and sometimes more fruit or veggies, or grains or other plant-based foods added, or substituted in place of dairy and or overt fats.
The staff members are very accommodating, patient and pleasant and understanding there at the PunPun within the Suan Dok Wat Park, that is equally as enjoyable and serene in Chiang Mai.
We found that Vegetarianism is far more popular in Chiang Mai, and the word Vegan does fully encompass what a cleaner more Hygienic Plant-Based Vegan eats.
